  1. While every company, including Marriott, has it's problems, Marriott is truly the best company to work for!

    Pros

Marriott is all about the people - recognition for a job well done is core to the Marriott philosophy. People respect each other, and upper management respects the associates. Marriott truly respects work life balance, and the company as a whole tries to enable associates to work a family friendly schedule. Telecommuting is becoming the fastest trend in the IT field, making my current position fantastic for my family. If you work hard, you will be rewarded with not only a promotion, but merit increases. And, the room rate discount is fantastic!

    Cons

People don't work at Marriott for the money. People work at Marriott for the management style and the other people. Anyone could easily go to another hotel company and make more money. The benefits are good, but they could be better, specifically the health insurance.

    Advice to Management

This is a fantastic company - you believe in your associates, and in turn we believe in you. In the current economic situation, I realize it may be hard to give associates the raises you think we deserve; however, I promise that if you reward is fairly, it will not only make us that much more loyal, it'll further stimulate the economy.

    Pros

Marriott provides a supportive work environment. They have some of the best training in the industry and provide employees with the opportunity to move around and work in serveral departments. Management encourages a wide breadth of experience and are encouraged to push emoployees to try new things and departments. The benefits-medical and retirement are decent enough and competative with those in the industry, as is the pay. There is a choice in plans for medical and the majority if not all of dental, vision, disability and life insurance are covered. Marriott retirment savings will match what you put in up to a ceratain percentage. They are many resources available to all employees for everything from cell phone discounts to help with life planning. The employee discounts on rooms aren't to shabby either!

    Cons

Being the hospitality industry hours can't be helped. If you are working on property in an operations department, you are going to work nights and weekends. This isn't neccessarily a bad thing, depending on your lifestyle and other obligations. They will always try to give you your two days off in a row as if it is a real weekend. The hours for manager are less than ideal. You must work a minimum of 50 hours per week, whether it is busy or not. Most managers are salaried so this is looser for them than others, however with a new change in some positions, some have been switched to hourly, which means working 10.5 hours per day in order to make their promised salary. There are also problems with going from property jobs to corporate jobs. There is little cross over from one to the other as they make it hard to have the proper requirements/experience to do so.

    Advice to Management

Always be open and honest about changes that are happening in the company, particularly when they directly effect the employees. Keep up with the training available and encourage all employees to take advantage of said training. The associate appreciation events are a great way to show you care, however many properties do not participate, or do so in a limited fashion. Strongly encourge/mandate properties to participate in these pivotal activities.

    Pros

benefits, discounts needed at other cities during vacation. there are many great connections around the other states that are truly friendly and once they know that you are part of this great company, you are then treated like you belong in a secret society. While I've been to some other locations where the service can use much needed training, even for the management level position. They seem to not want to be there. Their level of curteous isn't a 10 but not even in the average level in my opionion. All I received was "thank you for choosing ____ and enjoy your stay". There wasn't any eye contact you know, how could this be?

    Cons

    weekends, holidays are a must

    Advice to Management

be more open to see the hard hours put in and back view work not appraised for

    Pros

Great benefits and dealing with people. The schedules are designed to fit just about every employees personal life and can be adjusted if needed to under the right circumstances. The opportunities to advance up the ladder are very good and if given the right chance, can be done in a reasonable amount of time after starting there.

    Cons

The work hours can be grueling if appointed to an overnight shift and at that time the customers can be a bit hard to handle. The employees that work there are all great people to work with and management shows a great deal of consideration for their employees and the overall work enviroment of the business.

    Advice to Management

Try to work your way up from day done and treat every customer with equal respect

    Pros

Working for Marriott allows you unlimited possibilities if you are willing to move. The training structure available is awesome. Communication within the hotel flows pretty free. Depending on what area you are in, whether it is sales, or operations, the days can be long and hard to adjust to.

    Cons

If you aren't willing to move, then the opportunities shrink immensely. Sometimes the expectations are set too high, based on demand of the city. It would be better if the owners were present more often within the hotel. Most Marriott properties are not owned by Marriott, but are a franchise ownership.

    Advice to Management

I would want Senior Management to listen to and acknowledge feedback more often

    Pros

Marriott has a very family centered corporate culture. Employees seem to stay with Marriott for many years, which I think is a true testament to Marriott's ideals of promoting employees within the Marriott Brands.

    Cons

The income potential seems to be lower than the competitiors. When working at a smaller Marriott property you are given more responsiblitly within your job function without the reward of higher pay. The other downside is accruing PTO as you work instead of having 2 or 3 weeks that you can take any time after your 90 days of employment with the company.

    Advice to Management

I would suggest that Marriott re-evaulate the pay ranges for all postions continuously to be competitive with other companies in the hospitality industry. I also would suggest giving a standard 2 or 3 weeks off after the completion of an employee's first 90 days instead of the accural of PTO time througout the year.

    Pros

Quality management truly focused on the business while remembering the importance of taking care of their employees. Fair salaries, good benefits, smart people with loads of experience. Dedication to community service

    Cons

Conservative, slow to respond to changes in the marketplace sometimes, some areas show few opportunities for advancement.

    Advice to Management

It's important to "go to your bench" sometimes and give opportunities to well deserving, hard working, junior associates. Also, take risks and be adventurous without going crazy; it's important to adapt to our customers which are no longer just baby boomers.

    Pros

The travel benefits are nice...the discounted rooms are a big benefit when taking a big trip. Lots of room to move if you are in operations...but not if you want to become a director

    Cons

Making the move from Manager to Director is very difficult...Marriott's growth is now in select service hotels and more and more of the Sales and Revenue areas are being clustered creating limited promotions. The only true way to boost your pay is to move...but the problem is there aren't any places to move.

    Advice to Management

Stop preaching about all of this opportunity to move up...it was there 15 years ago...but not now.
