I worked at Marriott full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Good networking opportunities, compensation average, perhaps lower calibre of graduate salaries but depends on which hotel you work in.

    Cons

Long hours, stressful work, hospitality roles can be stellar or horrible, depends on team and hotel.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Train everyone more, Marriott philosophy of putting employees first does not deliver across all properties and levels of management.

I worked at Marriott full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Very flexible work schedules, exciting feeling of change and inspiration in recent years, culture is incredibly welcoming and supportive

    Cons

Due to large size, some things take longer to get done due to too many check-points, etc.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be on the lookout/have ears open to ideas for how to make internal processes more efficient. There is a feeling in some groups that the way they've been doing business for the past 20 years is still the best way, which is not necessarily the case.

    Pros

    Great people to work with

    Cons

Being in the hospitality industry it is open 24/7/365. That gets old real quick.

I worked at Marriott full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Big multi national corporation, lots of training options. Access to a large amount of information, an answer fr every question, very professional. Company culture. Training from the bottom up. Good company benefits.

    Cons

Advancement is next to impossible without someone leaving and this could never happen. Salary although not bad could be much higher in a smaller chain/private hotel. Advancement becomes a waiting game of who gets caught and ''recommended for termination'' first or outworks/lives (decades) the others. Also I don't know the ''PC'' term for this but being ''best friends'' with senior management is the easiest way to get promoted.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Compare effort and evaluate results more than time spent with the company. Tell people the truth not ''there's a new hotel opening in 4 years and you will all be top pics for promotions''. Or rumours of positions in other cities which if you question deeper turn out to be lies.

    I worked at Marriott full-time

    Pros

Great benefits! Absolutely fantastic, and I got to work with great people.

    Cons

Get very boring. Ended up just being too much of the same thing day in and day out for me. There didn't seem like there was enough room to grow and learn.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I worked at Marriott full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Great trainers in their craft, strong company values and history. In the beginning, great at promoting within and sometimes ethical. Great benefits but can work on compensation I would recommend this company for someone new to the business but would not stay for a long period of time.

    Cons

Favoritism is bad at some properties. The politics at some properties got in the way of promoting deserving associates. The company use to believe in hiring quality associates but lost in way as the years went on. Work/Life balance was horrible and the company did not want to work with you. Even though they won awards with working mothers, this only applied to line associates and not management. Loyal associates (number of years) no longer matters. The person is not valued.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The people investment is no longer a priority of this company. It appears that the bottom line (money) is the only thing they are interested in. Work/life balance is horrible and the company does not want to work with you on trying to manage the two. The politics and sometimes unethical behavior experience is not what Marriott planned for his company. Length of service does not matter anymore and this company has begun to show it doesn't matter. Management needs to get back into developing their associates for success. Senior management is too concerned with getting to their next move by any means necessary.
