I enjoyed working for Marriott for the most part. The company is outstanding for work/personal life balance!

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) Bethesda, MD

    ProsWork/personal life balance
    Community Outreach
    Benefits (hotel discounts, especially)
    Flexibility

ConsCompensation in relation to your individual contributions
Management's inability to deal with employee conflict

Advice to Senior ManagementManagers should be forced to attend mandatory training on an annual basis. Some managers have favorites who they cater to and others are so aloof that they don't know what is going on within their departments.

    Wonderful Employer

Guest Service Representative (Former Employee) Memphis, TN

ProsThey really try to promote from within. They are willing to train you and offer online classes but the best opportunities come from hands on experience. Benefits are pretty ok.

ConsYou have to be in really good with management to really see promotional opportunities. They could train little better, they have a tendency to follow the sink or swim ideal.

Advice to Senior ManagementTry to make opportunities more available to employees instead of trying to trap them in one position.

Conslittle training, no school reimbursement, 24 hour business, long hours which make long weeks, little social life, a lot of stress on body and mind

    Great Company...too much reorganization

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsSpirit to serve is a way of life, not just a motto. Great culture, management and brands. Associates truly care about the work they do. Flexible work arrangements are a huge plus.

ConsFor the past several years there has been constant reorganization, continue to be asked to do more with less. Difficult to advance or transfer to other departments.

Wonderful people, excellent benefits, ok pay

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsMarriott really focuses on a good work-life balance. The people are exceptionally friendly and expectations are reasonable. The associate rates are excellent. There are lots of small advancement opportunities.

ConsIt can be hard to branch into management because people rarely leave.

Awesome experience, taught me that I can be better and expect more of myself, great people.

Customer Care and Sales Specialist (Former Employee) San Antonio, TX

    ProsMarriott gives great benefits.
    Starting wage is usually between 9 & 12 dollars/hr.
Always has some sort of benefit/fundraiser going on to help the community.
    Maintains new opportunities for growth.
If you have issues with someone they have an open door policy.
    Paid training
    Perks
    Discounts
    Total Compensation at high value

    ConsCan get repetitive
Can get boring if you don't stay active
    long hours
You have to bid for your schedule
If you have a change in school schedule, they don't change your schedule immediately (even with proof of school-work conflict) ; it cost me my job and it didn't matter the length I was there 1-2 yrs, or my review status of Satisfactory Performer, or the fact that I always took overtime to help the company. ((Still a good company))

Advice to Senior ManagementIf someone has a school schedule to work around, you should be able to allow the new schedule to take effect immediately as long as they prove they are in school for the hours they need to be excused. This flaw cost me my job because I was given an ultimatum to choose school or work.

    Intern at Corporate Tax Department

At Corporate Tax Department (Former Employee) Bethesda, MD

ProsGood work environment. My supervisors were willing to teach and help if you ask. They take good care of their employer, and it is a very positive and supportive environment, with good compensation. In return, I was motivated to work hard.

ConsStrict deadlines due to the nature of the tasks. The IT department is not the easiest to work with, not the most responsive.

    Great people, limited opportunities

    Area Sales (Former Employee)

ProsGreat work-life balance, a lot of freedom in a work from home environment, great benefits when traveling.

ConsHorrible restrictions on promotion eligibility, lack of direction, below average pay. They aren't upfront about the restrictions surrounding promotions, however, you'll be forced to wait at least a year before promotion, regardless of performance.

Advice to Senior ManagementEliminate the restrictions around promotions, millennial employees won't wait, your competition will get them. Reward your salesforce with better salaries, again, the competition will. Figure out the sales process, it's complicated, the sales office is cumbersome and difficult for clients to understand, good sales people should be able to write and close their own contracts.

ProsThey do good training, have great systems in place

ConsNeed to be successful is starting to push great staff away

Advice to Senior ManagementGet back to the Marriott philosophy: don't recite it, live it
