I worked at Marriott Vacation Club for more than a year

    Pros

    1. Pure 8 to 5 job with no overtime.

    Cons

    1. IT systems have already been set in place. Hence, there is very minimal work and it is extremely boring to spend 8 hours every day. At least, this is what I noticed in my department and after talking to people in other teams.
    2. Most of the employees have been working for 10+ years and thus, there is no "fresh energy" in infuse new ideas and technologies.
    3. Many managers were laid-back. My manager was big in micro-management and I had no fun working for this individual.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Your competitors i.e. Wyndham and Disney Vacation Club, have invested a lot of money in new technologies and new talent. Get new talent on board.

I have been working at Marriott Vacation Club full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Decent insurance, flexible hours, fair bonuses if you are a hard worker, travel discounts, floor level managers care.

    Cons

No cost of living increase for 14 years, promotion is near impossible, senior level managers don't care or understand. To many systems for so little pay, using upto 8 systems in one call. They expect high level conversations for low level pay. Push push push insurance on eveyone for a better bottom line.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You get what you pay for, read the writing on the wall before everyone jumps ship.

    Pros

    Medical Benefits were the best

    Cons

Management played favorites. They let teenagers run the show while they hid in there offices. A real "you gotta be in the club" kinda place. If you didn't fit in, they got rid of you. They disliked older (older that 30 yr old) workers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Grow up. The teenagers didn't really care about there job.

I worked at Marriott Vacation Club

    Pros

The people are awesome!!! The only reason that I wanted to go to work everyday was to see my co-workers. They were very friendly and helpful in those seemingly stressful situations. Needed equipment was available to do your best job.

    Cons

Management is very mediocre. Most managers seemed to have no knowledge of the hourly positions they were managing. They would rather have you do the hard work while they chatted all day on the phone about personal business. Favoritism is a very strong suit here. No matter how hard you worked they always tried to push you to run that extra mile, or 5, while your lazy co-workers seemed to have less to do and greater pay on a seniority basis. The accounting staff has seemingly no knowledge of overtime pay laws. Bonuses from management were continuously promised with no return. You could always expect to do some of the managers dirty work without appreciation. No organization as far as supplies go. Possible promotion opportunities involved taking over half of the managers paperwork with a $0.25 pay raise. The benefits are terrible! You pay on average $360.00 a month for yourself and your dependants. If you have a spouse then forget about it unless you can afford another $50.00 a week to spend.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Learn the position you are managing. Learn how to get your hands wet when you have no one to cover a shift. Stop showing favoritism towards the most knowledgeable associate. Quit running your employees to the breaking point just because you don't understand their positions. Learn time management and show some appreciation towards the people that work the hardest. Put up realistic quota goals. Don't make false pay promises to get your hard working employees to continue working for the peanuts you are authorized to pay. And don't throw your employees business around to their associates or your friends that manage other departments. Keep personal feelings, and employee warnings confidential.

Leadership was very disorganized. They had more VP's and Directors than Managers. Way too top heavy. The industry was a little dishonest.

I have been working at Marriott Vacation Club as an intern for less than a year

    Pros

Discounted room rates, good company culture.

    Cons

I had a poor experience. I have completed internships with other companies, that had far greater internship programs. As an intern with Marriott, the next step in the progression is to become a manager. In the application process I was told I would shadow the manager, and attend the meetings that they attend. I would basically be prepping to step into a management position. None of that has happened, I have been given the worst shifts, have only spoken to my manager a total of 2 times, both times were less than 10 words. The company offers development programs for the associates, but I have been scheduled to work for every single one of them, so I have not been able to attend. The managers here are terrible with guests, I have seen many managers be fired who were much better than the ones I work for now with Marriott. It is very unfortunate, because Marriott is such a recognized name, and they are failing to uphold the standards that other Marriott hotels hold themselves to.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Remember that the interns become the next managers. If you want to have a good selection of candidates to hire, take some time to develop them while they are at your hotel. If we aren't getting the development that we need during college and internships, when are we supposed to get it.
