    Run.... run for your lives!

Assistant Vice President (Current Employee) London, England (UK)

    ProsSome very friendly people
Good benefits - particularly the health insurance
    Good location

    ConsHighly political atmosphere
Some extremely incompetent people in senior positions who seem to weather every storm just because their 'face fits'.
Compliance culture is very poor - just a tick box exercise that is veiwed as a necessary evil. Very poor compliance culture.
HR is useless if you have any serious issues - complaints are swept under the carpet and there is one person who is famous for never answering emails or her phone. If you need to speak to her, you have to call someone sitting near her to see if she's in and actually go up to see her!
Very poor bonuses and pay increases, unless you are a broker making big £££ for the company.
IT is not great and can be very frustrating

Marsh used to be a great place to work. It has changed

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

    ProsBenefits and pension is great.

ConsManagers are not your typical managers in my office it is more of a popularity contest. My manager constantly gossips and talks bad about other employees and their families. Manager will do anything to make themselves look better and you look bad. Nothing is professional about manager

Advice to Senior ManagementTreat your employees with respect get rid of management that makes marsh be a bad place to work

A company with enormous potential and great client base but hampered by territorial attitude and behaviours.

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsFlexible but demanding work. Great client base. Decent salary and bonus potential. Some excellent colleagues nationally and internationally. Potential to develop as cutting edge company.

ConsOver emphasis on sales to the detriment of client service in longer term. Greater need to work with exisitng client base especially for expanded services. Serious failure to leverage and share the knowledge within, with some noteable exceptions such as Higher ed practice. Territorial mindset seriously hampers business and career development...

Advice to Senior ManagementBreak down territorial barriers and not just national ones. Replicate cross border practice like higher ed.
Focus on success with clients not just the figures. The sucess will bring the figures along in time.

It enabled me to get my feet wet in the brokerage arena, but didnt provide a place to foster a career

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsThere are many great people who work there and the carriers they work with are excellent as well.

ConsNo room for advancement. No compensation when merited. Uncaring with respect to family coming first. No recognition for a job well done.

Advice to Senior ManagementSupport and reward those who produce and perform for the company and create more opportunities for advancement for them. Promote from within- there are some great people that work there that will leave and go to another brokerage because they have hit the glass ceiling.

Not a place for the seasoned employee

    Vice President (Former Employee)

ProsInsurance fundamentals, team work, benefits, interaction with numerous departments/functional areas. office politics--you'll learn how to avoid work! A training ground for the new graduate!

ConsLazy management who are much older and many who could not put together a PowerPoint slide or conduct a meeting.

Advice to Senior ManagementNeed to progress to the 21st century! All of their systems are at least 20 years old and no plans to modernize.

Know your employee number. That is all you are to senior management.

    Senior Vice President (Former Employee)

    ProsFlexible schedule

Very good benefits with modest co-pays and cost to employees.

Nice pension plan - if you work there long enough to get it

ConsThe company jumps from "initiative" to "initiative" with absolute abandon resulting in mixed messages to employees as well as clients.

Unfortunately, as has been widely reported, employee loyalty and track record of accomplishments is not valued much at Marsh. Todays performance is what matters above all else.

Management is often more concerned with keeping their own jobs and show an unfortunate inability to take risk.

Advice to Senior ManagementMarsh is a wonderful legacy company. Try to keep in perspective what made Marsh great: its people. Sadly, your blind love of matrix analysis to determine performance speaks volumes about your inability to recognize innovation.
