    Pros

    - Many smart, knowledgeable, professionals
    - A fairly uniform world-wide brand
    - Broad spectrum of resources
    - A good place for young people to gain experience and responsibility
    - Decent wages and benefits for the middle rank-and-file
    - Very good compensation plans for senior and executive management
    - The Risk Management division (multi-nationals) traditionally had low turnover and excellent technical people
    - Extended benefits to Domestic Partners

    Cons

    - Very bloated, centralized management structure in New York HQ
    - Executive management's response to Spitzer's legal action in 2004 took 3 tumultuous years to stabilize and when the smoke cleared, a flattish, flexible decentralized organization had morphed into a rigid, authoritarian and increasingly out-of-step and out-of-touch management team.
    - Constant changing of technology platforms - most very, very bad - clunky and cumbersome.
    - 10s of millions of dollars spent on bespoke technology platforms - abandoned after a year or 2 - which really looks bad when you cyclically lay off hundreds of skilled workers.
    - Too many Managing Directors shuffling papers
    - Moving toward cheap, disposable workers
    - Middle Market business model can't compete with local and Regional
    - No longer stand out as knowledge leaders

    Advice to Management

    - Build a culture that values expert knowledge again. In fact, build a culture - yes, with real values; honesty, transparency - then walk the talk
    - Sell your Middle Market business - you're burning out your people in a doomed effort to compete with more flexible companies who focus solely on that sector. They do it better than you.
    - Focus on Risk Management
    - Send half your MDs out to pasture
    - Stop selling on price
    - Get rid of the commission structure - it provides the wrong incentives; selling cheap price and taking too long in the marketing cycle to do so thereby driving down profit - double whammy.

    Pros

Marsh offers a great benefit package and once was a great place to work.

    Cons

Once the higher ups decided that to save money jobs needed to be outsource the company went downhill fast. The management team stop talking with employees on future plans, the quality of work went down and reports were being made that did NOT show the correct outcome or progress just to show their decisions were correct.

    Advice to Management

Start looking at employees as assets and not something to be discarded or lied to.

  6. Decent place to start career.

    Pros

    - Good benefits/paid time off/good management in our office
    - Work closely with a fun team
    - Easy way to gain office experience
    - Gain specific software experience

    Cons

    - Virtually no way to move up unless a supervisor leaves
    - Expected to understand insurance without every being trained about insurance itself
    - People with higher positions than us don't know how to do our job - proof they don't promote from within
    - Extremely high turnover. There are new employees all the time and current employees leave just as often
    - Paid next to nothing

    Advice to Management

If you pay us more and get rid of the incompetent specialists, the attrition rate would not be so high and we would make Marsh a career - not a temporary workplace to gain office experience.

    Pros

Great quality of coworkers.Good teamwork and camaraderie among peers. Nice working environment with an easy commute. It's in Iowa.

    Cons

Revolving door of senior executives. For example, at least 6 different CEO s in 10 years making it impossible to chart a strategic course then sail there.

    Advice to Management

Be more inclusive and really look around you at the talent available. You're missing it by not involving capable people in our leadership team.
