I have been working at Marten Transport full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Good trucks and maintenance department seem to care about drivers more than they used to everyone I talk to seems happy.

    Cons

No much home time. Forced Per Diem hurts drivers in the end.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you would let the per diem program be flexible so not required I would come back to work for you. Per diem just hurts drivers. Not sure if you still have this program.

I have been working at Marten Transport full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

I like being able to take time off to help my folks out. (they are in the 70's & 80's) I appreciate their equipment, it is top notch. And most of the other drivers are friendly enough.

    Cons

I drive western regional. I am dispatched out of the Wilsonville terminal. I have found most of the dispatchers there arrogant and belittling towards me and other drivers. They talk negatively about the drivers and treat you as if they are better than your are. When they do, do their job they act as if you owe them for doing you a favor. When you need to get hold of someone in Wilsonville no one answers the phone. Ask them to call you in a message over the QUALCOMM and they never do. Not one time have anyone of them called me even when I was broke down and trying to find out what to do after calling road service. (who are great) When they ask for a favor they rarely compensate all they promise. The arrogant better than anyone attitude is a real turn off. I am considering a change.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Drug test all Wilsonville dispatchers. You might be surprised.

I worked at Marten Transport full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

They actually pay for detention. You usually know how much before you leave the shipper/receiver. Good Equipment. Good miles. Get you home when they said they would IF you give them 2 weeks notice like they ask.

    Cons

Sleep machine if you fail their sleep test takes time to get use to (But I hate to admit it, it helped me get better rest). Having to get truck and trailer checked every time you go to a yard (but they are kept up). If you go to CA, you usually have a days wait to get a load out (but I have had that problem with other companies too). No Prepass.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get the Prepass system. Don't start training for new drivers, keep hiring experienced drivers.
Raise the mile rates. Use mapquest for paid miles. in this day of computers, address to address is more fair when paying the drivers and charging the customers on your end too.

I have been working at Marten Transport full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

High miles. Good pay per mile. Great benefits.

    Cons

Hard to get time off. Called back early too many times.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make home time more manageable. Do not called it super regional. It is OTR.

I have been working at Marten Transport

    Pros

High wattage installed inverters, generators, bunk ac/heating. Decent pay and now instant hourly pay for those shippers that like to make us sit at a dock for 14hrs. Management seems to be aware of what brings home the bacon and consequently takes better care of its drivers than any other trucking company I have been with.

    Cons

Easy to get a bad reputation if you stand up for yourself with abusive customers or DOT officers. Dispatch and load planners need to understand there are some serious jerks out there messing with us truck drivers constantly. Young dispatchers need to know that we are working long hours away from home constantly with all of the responsibility and almost no authority. Pushing productivity to the max tends to put a bunch of stress on us and consequently we tend to be a bit grouchy at that point. Some dispatchers/load planners get that and make this job tolerable but those few that don't can make life a misery.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Thanks for the pay increases, the nice truck equipment, not requiring us to chain, and helping us deal with the people out here who do their utmost to make life miserable. An offer of a 3 day local work week plan would allow me to have a life, wife, and family ; ) (36hr work week over three day)

I have been working at Marten Transport

    Pros

Marten cares about their customers and employees equally. They do what is right for everybody in a professional way.

    Cons

I wish they would give me another chance to prove that I was as committed to them as they were to me during my medical treatments.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Randy, I would only offer the advice to examine your work comp department because I think drivers that worked well but got injured are being mistreated.

I have been working at Marten Transport

    Pros

Opportunities for career advancement, Truck Driver, Fleet Manager, Senior Management or just entry level office positions.

    Cons

Depends on the fleet manager you get, that they will give you a balance to provide stable income while being on road and provide ample home time for you and your family. There are several Fleet managers that really don't care about the drivers, self-centered management, as long as they get their check and they get off work at the time they are suppose to, they just don't care. Let me say that all fleet managers aren't like that though.
