I'm still figuring this business out

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsAutonomy, independence, entrepreneurial, success pays well.

ConsMinimal training beyond sales and products. Learning complex implementations is totally on you. No salary makes it challenging initially.

ConsThe time they paid you to study was not enough

    good training but slim support

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsThe training program is decent. There is a lot to take away from the managers and talented peers. The competition allows you to develop your practice.

ConsKind of throws you out to make things happen from nothing. There are lots of fees that get deducted from your pay. In the beginning few months, expect to have negative income.

    Stable, conservative, great for workaholics

    Quantitative Specialist (Former Employee)
    Springfield, MA

ProsGood pay, nice home office amenities like fitness center, awesome cafeteria, credit union, dry cleaners, etc. I had the very best in computer equipment including two monitors.

ConsLousy benefits. Police state culture: they take security to the extreme. Sometimes when they do layoffs they just walk people out without letting them say goodbye or letting them pack up their own stuff even if they did nothing wrong and just aren't needed anymore. Some employees are openly racist. (Controllers and Corp Planning) but management makes a real attempt to support minority ethnic groups. The Springfield office is in an African American neighborhood but most Blacks I saw there worked in the cafeteria. There were a few in my division, and I saw other individuals be disrespectful toward them. (This really disgusted me) The new CEO is from investment banking, not insurance and he is heartless. The company only exists to enrich the 1%. With this new CEO they don't even pretend to care about anyone else. U.S. economy tanking? Now problem, we'll sell to Japan and China.

Advice to Senior ManagementTreat employees with respect! Treat them like human beings! Give employees more of a voice. There is some amazing talent there. Do more to help the city of Springfield, you owe them that much for being your home.

    Good company, limited opportunity.

    Manager (Current Employee)
    Springfield, MA

ProsFlexible work schedules. Excellent work / life balance. Great people. Rewarding work environment with the flexibility to take on additional responsibilities to build skills.

ConsOpportunities for upward growth and mobility are limited and the organizational politics are considerably difficult to navigate. In many areas the leadership has trouble making decisions and the culture can be very self-serving.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe best way to fix culture is from the top down. Process does not fix cultural issues like trust and communication.

Good place to gain experience to take elsewhere

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsSafe secure offices, free parking, decent on-site cafeterias and amenities (gym, salon)
A respected name in financial services that will look good on a resume.
Inter-company transfers are fairly easy, allowing someone to move horizontally and gain experience in multiple financial services functions.

ConsLeadership roles are consistently filled from outside the company. There is a distinct aversion to promoting from within, and ranks of VP and above are almost exclusively filled by hiring from competitors.

Extremely hierarchical; you will get no support from HR or elsewhere if you are having an issue in your dept

No transparency in decisions or accountability for results at the leadership level. Several years ago one business unit cost the company the equivalent of a small country economy in reserve losses. The CEO was given a plum work-from-anywhere job doing a function never identified and with no expected output. The CFO was promoted to be in charge of corporate strategy. The workers were hit with 50% layoffs.

This is a highly politicized environment. Because management is not accountable to quarterly results, or any objective management, relationships are the only driving factor. I had been specifically told not to show evidence of poor decisions or bad work practices (not fraudulent, just incompetent) not because I was wrong or there were reasons for the behavior, but because presenting the issue would be 'disrespectful'.

Advice to Senior ManagementA leader leads by serving, and we don't mean second servings Roger.
