Very positive organization that works with the sales team

Financial Services Professional (Current Employee) Chicago, IL

Prosas a field agent, I feel like the company works for me. It is nice to feel like they understand how challenging my career is and really work with the sales team.

Consnot a lot of assistance with capital investments. It is very hard to continue to grow, because every dollar is out of your own pocket.

Advice to Senior Managementretention isn't that tough, just takes money

A solid place to build your insurance career

Financial Representative (Current Employee) Tampa, FL

ProsFreedom and flexibility to choose how you want to build your practice. Excellent support with product knowledge and access to information. Excellent products to provide to your clients.

ConsThere seems to be a lack of training in language for new recruits with contacting prospective clients and communicating the goals of their relationship. Commission only position, but some financing is available to people new to the industry.

Good if you're good at sales

Financial Services Professional (Former Employee) Rochester, NY

    ProsExcellent products.
    Excellent commission rates.
MMLISI is a very good broker-dealer for securities business.
MassMutual agents are not captive, so even if you work at a MassMutual office you can still submit business with other companies. (And if you do the business through ASH Brokerage, they even count somewhat towards your sales targets.)

ConsTraining programs are weak for new agents.
Products are very high-end and are geared to experienced professionals and the wealthy.
If you don't sell you don't get paid.

Advice to Senior ManagementGive new agents more of a chance. Invest in your fresh blood instead of telling them to come up with a list of all of their friends and family members and throwing them to the wolves.

    Positive Experience overall.

Systems Specialist (Current Employee) Springfield, MA

ProsLocation (if you are from Springfield area)
    Great facility
    decent benefits - medical excluded.
overall the people are very friendly

ConsVery structured. ITIL processes are very stifling. Programs are not implemented well.
    Way too much off-shore outsourcing.
    Moral is very bad.
    IT procedures are extremely inefficient

Advice to Senior ManagementNo advice here. Overall the company is very solid and offers great products. We generate a profit year after year. Sales folks are phenomenal.

Positive experience, but full commission and no salary

    Agent (Current Employee) Woodbury, NY

ProsUnlimited potential with a solid company behind you. Definitely a leader in many ways in the life insurance industry, with great home office support.

ConsNo salary and full commission. Huge differences in organizational culture depending on what local Agency you work through because the General Agent's have tremendous flexibility on how to run things.

Advice to Senior ManagementIncrease talent development and work on increasing retention rates. The communication on the local level is often quite poor within the Agency and is a major source of frustration among both new org and veterans.

A good place to work with many excellent hard working people who all want to get the job done right.

Solution Architect (Former Employee) Springfield, MA

ProsFront line managers do care about their staff and work to help them be successful.

ConsBecoming more and more like a stock company (layoffs nearly every year of some kind or another). Communication is not always the best from senior level down to folks on the floor. Pushing to do more with less staff. Lots of folks putting in extra time to meet deadlines.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe transparent on expectations and willing to say when a project is over budget and not making deadlines. Consider the toll that 60 - 80 hour weeks take on the staff just to save face. This is not sustainable.

    Good place to work

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) Springfield, MA

ProsNice campus, project work tends to be challenging and rewarding. Management is fair and understanding with time off. Great on campus services.

ConsBenefits are horrible. They only offer a high deductible insurance. Springfield is a nasty place to work and live so living outside the city is best option.

Terrific place to be with a lot of potential for success; although, not an easy industry for the first few years.

Financial Services Professional (Current Employee) Pittsburgh, PA

Pros- Very entrepreneurially-minded: the better you do, the more freedom you have (ie start your own sales unit, create a DBA, personalized brochures, etc)
    - While there are numbers you must hit to maintain a contract, you are not captive to one company
    - Great bonus structure: the more you make, the more bonuses kick-in
    - Encouragment from company and agency management to always do what's best for your client
    - Excellent compliance department (although it can feel restrictive at times)
    - Terrific product training
    - Specialists available for client meetings, planning, or product questions
    - (nearly) 100% commission: the more work you generate, the more income you make. Additionally, the longer you are in the business, the more consistant income you will recieve from renewal commissions.

Cons- (nearly) 100% commission. There is a tiered financing plan availaible when you start, but it will primarily cover expenses.
    - The first few years are tough!
    - Lack of focus with training in general - not everybody who does training is on the same page
    - High turnover in industry in general - while turnover is not as bad as other companies in the financial services industry, you still will see a lot of people come and go.
    - While much effort is put forth to have a team-based approach and help people new in the business, there is still somewhat of an "every man for himself" attitude among veterans (perhaps from being being burned in the past due to the high turnover in the industry)
