    Potential, create your own income, get paid for the work you do

    Cons

    no support, you are basically on your own while you are working there. They are your best friend when you are selling, but will stab you in the back if your levels come down even one bit. management will only help you if you are making them money. they do not want to invest time in new employees to the business and there are several question marks as far as your compensation where they seem to hide information from you and do not give clear answers

    Advice to Management

    Run an advertising campaign, give new hires more guarantees with income to help them start off

    Good Commission Schedule and rates if you can sell.

    Cons

    The Management is horrendous. The atmosphere is disfunct and communication is almost non-existant. Management and Execs have no idea what nor care about how to help the advisors. You learn little to nothing of product knowledge and training is horrible. IT is the luck of th draw as far as getting a good manager who can help you sell. If you are stuck with a bad manager then you don't get paid and are left stranded and strapped for cash. If you work hard and keep up the persistance it will pay off however you need time, money to sustain for the 3 year start period.

    Advice to Management

    Help the new advisors get started and go out and show them the ropes.

    Pros

    I'm only writing this as a 'candidate beware!'. The work is not challenging, status quo is the norm, the culture is disappointing. Since they have about 6600 employees (not deducting recent layoffs) some people might like this environment or are too scared to get a job elsewhere. I wish I would have gotten out of there two years earlier.

    Cons

    Beginning w/pay, MassMutual will leverage a bonus against offering a fair/competitive salary. Half the bonus, however, is at the whim of your manager and senior management, the other half from company performance (not too good in this economy). Everyone is reviewed at the same time, so senior management and middle managers can reduce your rating to leave more funds in the pool for themselves (or there favorites). Human resource implies, to perspective employees, that the bonus is a great perk, so, since the candidate needs the job, they generally buy in hook line and sinker, which leads to disappointment when they figure this out. Thus the -5 salary rating. There is little respect for the employees, i.e. business problems arise and senior management begins the blame 'witch hunt'. When pointed out to a VP the response was, I'm not looking to blame someone, I just want to know who screwed up! There are so many lifer's with 20 - 30 years service, if you have less than 5 yrs don't even think of suggesting change or feeling a part of the teams. -5 for respect. The benefits are average or slightly less (excluding the bonus because of the first remarks). Job security is there only if your a member of the old-timers club, so -2. Work/life balance is one of the worst aspects, a -5. This is due to general fear of the employees and middle managers, emphasized by the practice of publically emphasizing the importance of work/life balance but not practiced. Blackberry's are running 7/24/365. I saw an employee admonished for suggesting the battery might have gone dead. Everyone's in 'on-call' systems. But if they can't reach someone they just start calling any name they have. When I left people didn't want to have after-hour event's or celebrations because they were just exhausted. In this environment career growth is stiffled, only 4 job zones, 1 and 2 are hourly non-exempt, 3 is your average employee, 4 is either senior individual contributor or manager w/staff. Then AVP, VP. People hit the bottlenecks to promotion quickly. As far as location, check Springfield MA ratings on the internet, there is no direct access to the headquarters via highway. You drive through awful neighborhoods on non-maintained roads (Springfield is broke). Coworker competince is average, but not what you want to bet your bonus on, a few rare stand-outs, but they don't seem to stay. The work environment: sorry but the Springfield headquarters is old (really old), and you feel like you walked into a time warp to 1952. If the rooms are not visible to the public they are filthy, 10 - 20 yr old rugs mismatched furniture out of the 60's etc. The 'renovated' areas have the smallest cubicles I've seen in fortune 500 companies. Manager's get larger cubes but no privacy to meet with staff. Biggest meeting area is the cafeteria because conference rooms are few and it is requested that you put in for one 3 days advance of the meeting.

    Advice to Management

    Close the massive Gap between Senior Management and the line workers. Quit hiding behind 1980s management rhetoric and begin to "walk the walk". This is more a company that makes money inspite of itself. When push comes to shove your 1950's culture still rules. Don't continue to keep secrets from your employees. Give them credit for the intellegence they possess.

    Pros

    Benefits are great. Allocated vacation time is wonderful. Employee services, ie bank, pharmacy, salon, gym, are located inside the building. well known name; everyone knows someone working at massmutual.

    Cons

    The annual review process is stress inducing and nonsensical. The guidelines are ambiguous. The gathering of solicited feedback on employees creates a popularity contest environment. Location is awful: crime-ridden neighborhood and broken streets. Thankfully, the company installed serious security measures to protect the employee and company property. HR mediates with bias- the outcomes are rarely in the employees favor. many senior managers are micro managers who lead by fear and intimidation.

    Advice to Management

    be objective, selfless and appreciative. work hard to promote work/life balance. value your people with talent and recognize how hard they're working for you. understand that in order to expect respect, you have to be the first to show it.

    Pros

    Job performance is rarely defined or assessed...so it's hard to fail. Very socialist compensation since the only way you can reward the high performers is to slam the low performers. Since this is a company that abhors conflict or honesty, that means almost everyone gets the same salary increase. So, you're just stupid if you work hard or long hours.

    Cons

    Why would you work where you can't get promoted on merit and aren't rewarded unless you suck up to the kings? If you are a technical expert, no one cares. You have to manage people to get promoted. There is NO room for really valuable technical contributors. Stay away from actuarial (bunch of arrogant power mongers who passed exams in the 1970s and know nothing about current products and methodologies), IT (they demonstrate day in and day out that they don't know and never knew how to write a program, to test programs methodically, write specifications, or manage others who do know how to perform IT tasks!), financial planning (let's just say that if no one believes your long range plan and that's only a 2 year projection, you are really bad) , or accounting (manual band aids are the solution to everything and no one knows how to checks the results for reasonability. They just get someone from every contributing area to sign a statement that their little piece is right!) jobs. No one where this company is going. The strategy is to sell more. Ideally sell more whole life, no matter the cost.

    Advice to Management

    Lead us with a big picture, long term view of where we are going. Why are we making the changes that we are? What's the long term business goal? Define roles and responsibilities. Then technical expertise can be applied, order can be restored, and we know who approves or disapproves our process enhancements or new product ideas.

    It is a good company with good products and services, as well as great potential for growth in the company

    Cons

    It is a pick your poison type of thing. Although MassMutual is a great company it falls I'll to the same woes of other mutual firms when it comes to growth within the country.

    Advice to Management

    Every company's management could lend better support and training. Senior management and personnel should mold new talent better in order to better retention rates.

    Advice to Management

    Need a new CIO. Need serious senior management turnover. Offer an early retirement package to get rid of the long-timers that are still stuck in the world of COBOL and DB2.

    Work Life Balance Pay for tuition Strong financials and very stable

    Cons

    Performance reviews are subjective and not tied to results IT Management has no vision, creativity or skills and very little IT experience. They believe all of their direct reports who also have very little IT experience.. Company is not flexible, adaptable or efficient. Business clients all use their own desired technology as it is not being centrally driven by the CIO. The CIO moved to his position because of the old boy's club

    Advice to Management

    Listen to the employees who are on the floor every day and they will tell you what the "real" not perceived issues are.

    Good solid company, been around a long time

    Cons

    Health Insurance has been a nightmare, Mass changed to Huge Deductables and after meeting our deductable, they cancelled our Cobra Insurance. Guess they really don't want their employees or former employees to use the insurance. Called Mass about issues with their Cobra administrative company and was blown off. If this is how they treat their policy holders when they have a problem, good luck.

    Advice to Management

    Treat your former employees better. Myself, family and friends are still policy holders, but probably not for long.

    Pros

    Great pay, flexible hours, decent benefits, good cafeteria, convenient free parking, health club, good medical department. That about does it.

    Cons

    Inadequate training, lack of current documentation, clique-ish structure and access to resources, poor control of testing and production environments, significant understaffing.

    Advice to Management

    Treat your employees as assets, not liabilities. There is a definite lack of structure and procedures need to be clarified and enforced.
