    Pros

The HR environment is fairly friendly for a big company. For IT work at home is common allowing you to easily manage things like contractors at home.

    Cons

The lines of authority and spans of control are very confusing. Frequent, partially thought out, re-orgs have made it difficult to make progress. Promotion and growth opportunities for mid-career professionals seem to be limited as management favors outsiders.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Find better ways to interact with staff. Many of them can make a bigger contribution if you found a way to enable that.

I have been working at MassMutual

    Pros

offers good benefits, most people are passionate about their work, opportunity to have an impact on culture - as long as the company is committed to making changes

    Cons

IT changes strategy often and has difficulty engaging all levels of management to ensure success, which leads to frustration

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Put competent people in management roles and then encourage professional growth of their respective teams

    Pros

The independent nature of each agent conveys an element of independence that allows you to determine the best way to accomplish tasks without much micromanaging

    Cons

There is lacking a sense of responsibility from management regarding the agents operations. Generally if you hit a roadblock, you are on your own.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Find a middle ground that allows you to offer more assistance and guidance to agents

    I worked at MassMutual

    Pros

You learn a lot about yourself, get good training, and great experience.

    Cons

All commission and the turnaround for underwriting can take forever. Hopefully you have some money saved up before starting. Also the charge you for things like internet and your own postage. Really tough to make it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't nickle and dime advisors and provide a base.

    Health insurance is mediocre
Aggressive working schedule (a lot of overtime, unsaid 40+ hour work week)
    Aggressive implementation schedule
Work/Life balance used to be more accommodating, not anymore
Upper management is a bit clueless

I have been working at MassMutual full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Big company benefits. They actually had a full time physical therapist available for employees. It is a beautiful monolith building with Italian marble walls. Decent work hours and environment.

    Cons

There is lots of snow during the winter and you might not be able to find your car in their huge parking lot. Typical large company politics, but that is to be expected.

I have been working at MassMutual full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Lots of autonomy and flexibility. You can do a lot of things here as long as you declare it as an outside business activity. Much better than a Northwestern Mutual, I was there for three years and got sick of there BS about Whole Life

    Cons

No base salary for producers. Most reps will never make over $100k. The industry as a whole is sick and needs change.

I worked at MassMutual full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Great compensation and benefits and flexible schedule.

    Cons

Anything such as marketing materials or trying to do evens is expensive with this company, be ready to join an am spirit group or you wont get much from this job. Also be ready to train your self because the managers here do not tell you what need to do in order to sell certain products. Best advice do all the training listed maybe tedious but least you would get paid.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Offer a base salary to those just starting out maybe the first 90 days. Also make the managers be accountable for the agents. Felt like a free for all I know your supposed to be a business owner here however your still an associate and you need guidance. My manager was often too busy to spend time going over things I needed help with.
