Great resume-builder but has ways to go to become what it CAN be -- the Intel of payments!

Business Leader (Former Employee)
Purchase, NY

I worked at MasterCard full-time for more than 8 years

Pros- Almost bulletproof, revenue-generating business model
- Strong brand built from the strength of its distribution, products, and the "Priceless" campaign
- Global company
- Seasoned, competent executive management
- A lot more entrepreneurial than it gets credit for
- Work-life balance
- Cool office for a Fortune 500 company
- Getting better at horizontal structure

Cons- Its business model, which is an open loop, makes it difficult to move fast since its dependent on issuers and merchants
- Hasn't yet earned credit for being a "technology" company within financial services
- Silos galore: functionally and geographically
- Executive management needs to narrow down its priorities since there are too many
- Although only just over 7,000 employees globally, it operates like a 700,000-person organization at times
- Some departments are becoming more intense -- lessening the work-life balance -- because of questionable strategic decisions
- Can't expect morale to increase just because of adding a pool and ping-pong table (they are nice additions) -- needs to be truly authentic
- High performers in middle management can be "stuck" because of the top-heavy organizational structure, coupled the company's above average retention rates

Advice to Senior ManagementThe executive management leads who report to the CEO need to:
- Stick to their decisions;
- Prioritize their strategic imperatives per business unit and region.

They should take a page from the CEO who is very clear and sticks to his priorities and decisions. One comment on the CEO is he likes to be right and goes off gut feel at times. But overall, he's taking MasterCard in the right direction for the most part.

A Successful Company Intent on Changing Culture

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Purchase, NY

I have been working at MasterCard full-time

ProsGreat People - wide variety of backgrounds and experiences, very approachable
Work/Life Balance - Plenty of paid time off, ability to take community service days
Company is Small - Greater responsibilities up front, wide scope
Industry Impact - MasterCard doesn't just work in an industry; it is part of a few that control it. The industry is constantly changing, though, so constant learning is available.
Variety of Work - Not just within a role, there are a very wide variety of roles in the company, allowing employees to transfer laterally.
Campus - Purchase is a beautiful area, and the HQ campus is no exception.
Reputation and Brand - Working for a globally renowned brand? Priceless.

ConsCulture is Still Changing - Some people still act in silos, sometimes making work redundant or difficult. Still, have pool table, ping pong table, etc.
Company is Small - Sometimes there is lack of clear responsibility division.
Slow to Action - For a such a relatively small company, MasterCard seems to be slow to adapt to the changing payments landscaping.

Advice to Senior ManagementAjay's passion, vision, and rallying call isn't translated down the ranks very well. We are confronted with the idea that there we are in a "war on cash," but the value of that isn't described. It affects internal productivity, retention, and recruiting. If we really want to have the persona, work, and status of one of the top payments technology payments companies in the world (which we are) then management MUST make that clear in words and action.

HR must establish a clear career path for younger employees.

Pretty Satisifactory

Senior Business Leader (Current Employee)

I have been working at MasterCard full-time for more than 5 years

ProsGreat brand, Nimble enough for a behemoth, good place to learn

ConsIgnoring of potential within and too focussed on finding talent without when it can be found right beside you

Advice to Senior ManagementBe aware of what you have before you seek it elsewhere

Good place to work if you have a supportive manager

Business Leader (Former Employee)
Purchase, NY

I worked at MasterCard full-time for more than 5 years

ProsExcellent compensation. Good work/life balance. Chance towork on cutting edge projects in financial services industry on right teams.

ConsPeople skills of most managers is lacking. Movement to senior ranks is near impossible for insider. You can make a long career for yourself by hiding in the weeds and not being a leader on a project. Many peope in ride coattails of a few very talented high performers.
