    My MasterCard Experience

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
    Purchase, NY

ProsOne of the reasons I enjoyed working for MasterCard was the camaraderie between my colleagues and the way the departments were able to interact with each other. I also felt comfortable with knowing that if I needed to talk to Management about something, that the door was always open. I liked that they had plenty of resources available to increase your knowledge base, and they encouraged self improvement as well as career development. Management was quite flexible with time off and I saw in most cases they were willing to work with you if you needed something, be it advice, assistance, whatever.

ConsThe only real downside about working at MasterCard was that there seemed to be frequent reorganizations. It makes for tense management, in my opinion. Some other downsides were the political aspect of working in certain departments, but you will find that in any office. As with any and everything else, it all starts with the people.

Advice to Senior ManagementFind a plan and stick to it.

ProsGreat work/life balance. Great commute for anyone living in Westchester.

ConsOld management needs to change. Still hanging on to old "country club" culture that will no longer work in today's marketplace.

Advice to Senior ManagementYou need to leverage in-house company talent better. Understand who has what experience and don't simply look at current position. Lots of MC employees have varied and applicable experience which is not being tapped.

Great Brand, Good working conditions but difficult environment to get things done

    Market Leader (Former Employee)
    Purchase, NY

ProsEverybody has heard of the company, you don't need to explain what your employer does. And for newbies to the industry, MCW does a great job of orientation and training new employees. The company offers good benefits and pay, though they have been pared significantly for new hires since 2007. The Purchase HQ and grounds are a beautiful place to work, but isolated if you're used to the bustle of Manhattan.

ConsMCW is a remarkably bureaucratic environment and often hard to get things done in timely, efficient manner. For all the talk about acting with a sense of urgency, even a simple project can drag on for months--thanks to the "matrixed" environment, buy-in and consensus is required for just about everything, and is often an excuse for manager and lawyers who don't know anything to stick their fingers into your project. (In fairness, I've been told this is beginning to change under the new CEO who just came in.) But an awful lot of what I did was "meta"-work -- work we had to do to prove to somebody else in the organization why we should be allowed to do our real work our way.

Advice to Senior ManagementReducing the number of meetings and strip out the bureaucracy would allow employees to actually get on and do their jobs.

    My expectations were wrong

    Vice President (Former Employee)
    Purchase, NY

ProsWhen I thought about joining MasterCard, I had reservations. It appeared to be a good place to go if you had decided you wanted to coast along, and do a minimal amount of work. But my interview, and my subsequent job experience proved otherwise.

MasterCard is full of bright people, who are energetic and know the industry. With rare exception, I was impressed by the people I met, their backgrounds and the competency they brought to the tasks at hand.

For people who are interested in the payments space, it's a great place to work.

ConsOn the other hand, I would say that MasterCard is unnecessarily bureaucratic for an organization of its size. Because of the incentive system and other factors, there's a lot of turf battles, less than needed coordination, and inefficiencies. However, there is a concerted effort (and there has been for many years) to change that.

The IPO appeared to also change how the business was run--more risk adversion, more of a short term focus, more attention to boosting the daily stock price.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop being so risk adverse and allowing HR and Legal to run the business. Create better coordination by revising the incentive structure and individual objectives.

    “Good place to work for”

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    New York, NY

ProsStrong managent overall, fair pay, good communication of firm's strategies, came through recession very well

ConsManagement of individual teams can be poor. More attention is placed on recruiting strong front office staff, appears to be less selective for backoffice staff.

Advice to Senior ManagementIncorporate 360 feedback for Director and Mananaging Director promotions process to ensure only managers who can direct and manage teams rather than please their own managers, are promoted.

    MasterCard not so bad

    Director (Current Employee)
    Purchase, NY

ProsMasterCard has really good benefits and a bonus and profit sharing program that works well. For the most part people are positive, friendly and helpful. The company also focuses quite a bit on professional development of the staff by requiring development courses be a part of each persons performance review process. They also conduct free seminars and invite subject matter experts to speak on common topics of interest such as personal finance. There are opportunities to grow at Mastercard but as with any company you have to make an effort to market your personal brand so that you can be noticed by senior management.

ConsOften there is too much red tape involved in executing good ideas. As a public company the focus is now on the bottom line and less on people.

For everything else, there may be something other than MasterCard.

    Product Analyst (Current Employee)
    Saint Louis, MO

ProsThere are many opportunities for personal and career development, for example, there are free online courses in banking, emotional intelligence, leadership skills, etc. The health center has a variety of activities for club members as well as non-club members. The cafe has a wide variety of healty options. Telecommuting has really taken hold this year, so there's more opportunities to balance work and family life. The ability to move up is available if you have good management. Industry information is paid for by the company, so there is no reason for not being in the know.

ConsToo much work and not enough people to do it, which translates into early burnout.

Advice to Senior ManagementHard working conscientious workers are hard to come by. Please do not use up your good workers by having them work day in and day out. More resources are needed to assist with the workload.
