    Pros

The people are wonderful and diverse. Many have worked there for many years. In order for Mattel to have such a large company in the area, LA made them work around the heavy LAX traffic - therefore half day Fridays. Mattel is generous to their employees in many ways.

    Cons

Everything goes up the chain to one person, therefore there is a lot of paranoia and constant changing of plans. Sadly, Mattel gets in its own way a lot and can move very slowly. The smaller upstart toy companies often get the products on the shelf more quickly at a lower cost.

    Advice to Management

Please trust the creative people you take so much care in recruiting and placing. It's soul crushing to have years of work killed in one hour because mothers in Long Beach "didn't get it." Take a good look at who your managers are and what they are capable of. There are a lot of people coasting and some great folks who are going unrecognized. The corporate structure needs a re-org.

    Pros

Half day Fridays, good benefits, global company, competitive industry keeps the politics down.

    Cons

There is not a strong push for innovation in products, there seems to be a strong block to transferring to different deparmrnts and divisions.

    Advice to Management

Listen to the innovative ideas of all employees, try to capture them

    Pros

Great management (in my case). I learned everything from concept design to finished on the shelf toy. Brainstorm weeks are fun and inspiring. You come out with a lot more skills and an open door to other companies. They have day care and Christmas & Halloween are a blast. It's a giving company.

    Cons

Big corporate environment that's not design driven. A lot of long meetings.

    Pros

It is a company for long term growth, good benefits, and enjoyed working in the toy manufacturing industry.

    Cons

I have no input at this time.

    Advice to Management

Keep employees informed on their work ethics and how to improve.

    Pros

Great company, great brands and very talented people. Pay is really good and they have amazing benefits. It's the most fun I've ever had at a job!

    Cons

I was told that, as a creative, you will eventually get laid off. And sure enough, that did happen. Every year, the rumors of layoffs become intense...to the point that it's hard for people to get work done.

    Advice to Management

Consider keeping creative talent in the areas of their expertise and where their passion is. Too often, people get moved to other parts of the business to get ahead only to displace people that are happy where they are.

    Pros

I think the company has good sound management that is making good decisions to keep us afloat in this economy. Sound judgement is important

    Cons

There really aren't many. The product competition might be the worst. Other than that there aren't too many reasons why I would move to another company

    Advice to Management

    Open more job positions abroad

    Pros

I enjoyed my time at Mattel. It was both a creative and collaborative work environment. Even as an intern my ideas and opinions were valued, and I was treated as an equal team member.

    Cons

I really cannot think of very many negatives about working here. It did feel very corporate at times, and that we were having to go through certain motions to merely comply with the corporation's standards.

    Pros

Mattel tries so hard to be good to it's employees. In order to build in El Segundo, they had to make a deal with L.A. to adjust their hours to reduce traffic around LAX. Therefore both Mattel and Fisher Price get half day Fridays. Many employee events. Lots of events for families and kids.

    Cons

The entire company reports to the CEO, therefore carefully researched decisions can be changed on a whim. Great deal of paranoia about other companies, and ironically, their own employees. Mattel works years to get something on the shelf and three months later, there is is by another company at half the price. They need to be a little more fast moving. It's a young world out there.

    Advice to Management

Take a hard look at your Managers. Many of them are from other industries and so poorly suited for their roles. Open up your world and trust your employees and they will bring you good work. Go for quality, rather than junk for quick profit (Barbie DVDs... need I say more?). Be a leader in the marketplace, not a panicked follower.

    Pros

Environment, benefits and salary are good. Friday's only work until 1 pm. Creative and fun to see your concepts come out of the Design Center. Great cafe and gym.

    Cons

Marketing is always stressful, but still rewarding. The toy industry is extremely competitive so there is always a buzz about lay-offs. There is a huge division between the upper management and the employees. It's rather insulting...like they are royalty.

    Advice to Management

Be friendly. We're all just people
