I have been working at Maxim Integrated

    Pros

    - Great working level people
    - Good at recognizing talent
    - Some of the employees really care about the company

    Cons

    - Has gotten way to political
    - Redundant middle management layers
    - Recently having issues maintaining good talent within the company
    - Company has a tendency to under invest in pretty much all their businesses

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The board really need to wake up and understand that Maxim is underperforming compared to its competitors. Action needs to be taken.

I worked at Maxim Integrated full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Good Stock payouts / Options, decent cafe, everything is in one building, work-out space on-site. Friendly, smart co-workers

    Cons

volatile, job-insecure, management doesn't comprehend your capabilities. layoffs are common, "leave-the-fun-at-home attitude". Each department has it's own budget, but often forgets important updates to IT

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get out of the consumer market, you did great with the commercial / military market. Bring more employee central activities in-house. Encourage alternative fuel-vehicles. Offer free Light Rail access and free on-site cafe. Make Maxim a destination, not a transit lounge.

Great Technology but Sales Management is very difficult on outside and inside sales teams

    Pros

Leading supplier in the analog semiconductor space.

    Cons

Sales Management focuses too much on salesforce.com metrics rather than truly creating a strong partnership with customers on all levels. Compensation plan is also very difficult to understand and very subjective which leads to many top performers being in the dark as to where they stand until they are delivered their bonus at the end of the year.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Create a better "Team" environment throughout all levels of sales management (Inside & Outside sales) and establish a true compensation plan that rewards the top performers and does not put them on the same playing field as under performers.

I worked at Maxim Integrated full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Many smart people. On-site cafe. Modern laptops for designers. With the push to be "Integrated", Maxim is trying to improve IP reuse. Management largely consists of once-engineers promoted, so many if not most managers have a technical background and understand electrical engineering.

    Cons

Groups communicate poorly so connecting with those smart people is challenging. On-site cafe is as expensive as going out. Just a few years ago Maxim IT was far behind the times, and a lot of the infrastructure bears the brunt of that legacy; for example, it is cumbersome or impossible to access data from other groups (other design groups, other functional groups like test, ESD, etc). With the legacy of being an analog company, analog and digital "Integrated" is a vision slowly becoming reality but not quite yet a reality. With many managers coming out of engineering, many have poor management skills and an out-dated view of needs of individual contributors.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Improve vertical communication. Many of the problems could be addressed if better understood. Require each VP to dine in the cafe monthly and to broadly announce the day, so anyone can sit with them and eat.

    Pros

There is a lot of work. You are always busy. Learned alot, everyone is helpful. OK compensation and health benefits. Interesting products, nice building, nice work place.

    Cons

Some engineers are not competent. No free food, pay is not that great, goes down every year, RSU aware goes down every year, bonus comes down every year, revenue falls every year. Good guys leave, bad guys stay. Some managers just want to do nothing, but move their lips.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

UP the RSU award or lose people
