I worked at Mazda North American Operations full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Good benefits, Friday summer hours, car allowance, casual dress code.

    Cons

Management not held accountable. If sales aren't tracking to objectives, they adjust objectives down to meet sales. When layoffs come the hard working lower level staff is easily let go but its the top management team which continues to make the same mistakes time after time. This is why Mazda makes no improvements in their performance. Profits for Mazda is macroeconomic based. Since the Yen is weak profits are up. It's a false sense of security.

I worked at Mazda North American Operations full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

The design is good. Good people to work with. Great car benefits and is conveniently located.

    Cons

Growth in Mazda is relatively slow or none. Another problem is that the salary is not considered high, compared to other makers. Not too many opportunities.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Too many managers and not enough of the workers to get the job done. Mazda Japan should focus efforts to help Mazda US, not force layoffs and buyouts.

I have been working at Mazda North American Operations full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Products are amazing. Work life balance is great. Pension is good. Pay is so-so.

    Cons

Managers are not equipped to manage people. They utilize techniques to scare and intimidate their employees. They reorganize every few years, the good people leave, the near retirement ago employees stay and drag down moral. HR is a horror show. Regional managers are Ford-era flunkies that could not make it elsewhere. Jim O and his cronies are killing this company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

One more re-org and push out the dead weight.

    Pros

Quick decision on new implementations and projects, nice perks

    Cons

No standard IT processes or methodology for in house IT projects, IT vendor selection based primarily on cost alone in many cases, quality of deliverable is not considered. The culture does not promote new ideas or risk taking rather just expects you to go with the flow

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Rotate people more often in different roles to give them challenges and exposure to new functions

    Pros

Fun, friendly workplace with people that are passionate about the brand. Great benefits. Zoom Zoom spirit is real and exists there.

    Cons

Layoffs and reorganizations every 2-3 years. HR functions to punish and hinder operations, not help.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Mazda is not a Japanese version of BMW despite what Mazda Japan thinks. Since the US is where all the current profits are, focus efforts to help Mazda US, not force layoffs and buyouts.

I worked at Mazda North American Operations full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

For the most part, there are a lot of good people at Mazda.
    The products are good.
The company car benefits are a plus!

    Cons

The culture, by far, is the biggest negative of the company. It's cronyism at it's worst and I agree with a previous post that it's "who you know", not "what you know".
Overall, the leadership at the company is very weak and becasuse people are promoted based on "friends and relationships", the real talent within the organization doesn't get promoted. That's why such a high percentage of people took the recent voluntary buy out package.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Promote based on talent and who's most deserving. By continuing to promote managers that do not demonstrate leadership, you are erroding the morale and overall talent base of the company. Institue a 360 of all managers....find out what's really going on within the organization and take your heads out of the sand!

benefit package on par with other auto manufacturers

    Cons

Incompetency of Regional Staff - specifically GM's

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need to do some house cleaning at regional levels; some seriously incompetent people working there.

    Pros

Exciting industry, small enough of a company to be exposed to multiple departments and projects. The employees are some of the best you will find anywhere.

    Cons

Poor communication from upper management. Vision and direction is often lacking. Poor co-operation between divisions to the point that multiple groups can be working on similar projects at the same time and create conflicts.

I worked at Mazda North American Operations

    Pros

If you haven't worked in the automotive industry before then Mazda is a great career introduction. It is a great place to network and meet lots of interesting, experienced and knowledgeable people. I often hear that people who start working in the auto industry rarely leave it. Working at Mazda, I can understand why. The industry and work environment is dynamic, competitive, and exciting.

    Cons

Get used to learning by fire. Work performance expectations, regardless of the training you receive, are high from the get-go. Learn office politics early on in order to succeed and survive. Get used to doing a lot of work and not getting credit for it. Friendly and helpful people should look elsewhere for a career; everyone is out for themselves.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Having "manager" in your title does not mean you do it well. Those in higher positions could really use some training in leadership, management, and communication skills. HR should occasionally come down from up on high to see job performance through their own eyes. Caring for and developing employees is what makes an organization strong. Practice what you preach.
