take a job here if you are Unemployed!

    Marketing Manager (Current Employee)
    Santa Clara, CA

ProsMcAfee is a company that offers free parking and free sodas to employees.

ConsMcAfee is a place to go to die or to go if you're unemployed--that was my excuse. The company is filled with "lifers" who have put in years and years. Quite uncommon in the valley so you should take this as a red flag! People managers have $0 budgets for development. In the entire time I have been here, not once have I attended a meeting (staff, extended staff, all-hands, etc.) that included a speaker from outside of McAfee or Intel. This is called inbreeding. This is what's going to kill McAfee.

Least capable get promoted. Remember that when you see someone's resume who was a director or a VP. The people who are changing things who are creative and paradigm-shattering come in and leave jaded usually under 3 years.

Advice to Senior ManagementInvest in your people
Allow your people more latitude to complete their jobs
Change meeting structures from status reports and top-down communications to more creative, problem solving and down-to-top communications

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

Wasted too much of my career here

Inside Sales Account Manager (Current Employee)
    Plano, TX

ProsMcAfee will hire anyone for inside sales positions even if you have no experience. You can come here, get experience and then leave for one of the competitors nearby and make a lot more money. If you do a really average to poor job at McAfee they'll promote you to management.

ConsTerrible inside sales management team. They are just a joke and most sit around a better part of the day joking around with each other, not working, not helping and being another obstacle to hurdle while you try to make your unrealistic quota. We have people hired to be sales mentors and coaches and all they do is talk about football and rock bands all day.

Advice to Senior ManagementIntel you should take a hard look at what's going on in Plano with your inside sales teams. It's crazy to me that it has been allowed to go on like this for so long, even with so many poor reviews posted. There is a reason McAfee has become a people machine with high turnover.

    Negative environment

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
    Santa Clara, CA

    Prosgood benefits and smart people

ConsAn "eat your young" environment has gradually taken over since the Intel acquisition. It's become completely non supportive and an aggressively negative place to be. Lots of pressure from Intel on new products has created a constant sense of panic that results in poor behavior at the leadership level. Complete mismanagement of headcount quarter to quarter persists and results in a persistent hire-then fire process.

Advice to Senior ManagementTake care of bullying managers from the top down. They are slowly poisoning the culture. With so much opportunity in high tech A players are unlikely to stick around for the abuse.

Not a friendly environment to work.

    Manager (Current Employee)

ProsVery little, Free software protection for 1 year

ConsThe IT department VERY RACIAL. Don’t like ex-military. Most directors seem to never have managed people before. Micro-managers. You wait for direction then get asked your status. Have no understanding of budgets. Always looking to blame instead of fixing problems. Changes processes, but don’t inform anyone and wonder why you don’t know of the change. Started looking for new position 3 weeks in.

Advice to Senior ManagementClear out your Directors

Archaic organization to be avoided at all costs, unless you're employed :)

    Marketing Manager (Current Employee)
    Santa Clara, CA

ProsThere are some nice people there. Free parking.

ConsSanta Clara office is in a poor location. Forget about taking a train to the office or a cush shuttle. We don't have those. What we do have is a vacuum at the top level that has liquidated engineering resources to the point that the company can't release a product that is innovative. Marketing is completely hamstrung with archaic systems. The web site doesn't even have a content management system. The company is full of slackers that have sat in their grey cubs for years doing nothing. Pay is awful. Company is going downhill fast.

    Advice to Senior ManagementReorg
    Pay people better
    Give employees leeway to innovate

Most poorly managed company I've ever worked for

    Inside Sales Representative (Former Employee)
    Plano, TX

ProsFree sodas and a ping pong game room. Healthcare benefits are very average, and they cover most of the major holidays with time off.

Cons- Disrespectful and unqualified inside sales management team from management
    - Lazy managers who walk around telling jokes and socializing all day while you do their work for them
    - Low pay in comparison to the local market
    - Very frustrating work environment because most processes are broken so everything has a one off work around that you must get approval for
    - No leadership or guidance from the Inside sales Management team because they don't know how to lead. Most are in over their heads in their role at McAfee.
    - Executive Managers prey upon young girls in Inside Sales and Channels
    - Very lacking in real career opportunities unless you are part of the boys club or one of the pretty girls who catches the eye of the executives
    - Low performers and the most mediocre people are promoted because they are well liked and network well. The spend their time networking instead of actually working.
    - Fluffed and absolutely falsified data is used to sell internal employees on what a great place McAfee is. There is a constant barrage of messaging and spin about McAfee internally that is based on bad data that would get most people arrested for publicizing.
    - They preach about a work life balance however inside sales will be working on Christmas Eve this year and the day after Christmas while all the execs and many Directors will be home with their families.
    - The culture in inside sales is very low class and unprofessional. It reminds me of that movie "Boiler Room" where everyone is tatted up, coked up and dialing for dollars on the phone.
    - The office workplace is horrible. Very low open walls, everyone can hear what everyone else is saying on the phone. There is zero privacy and professionalism there. Its so loud some days that you can't concentrate on your work.
McAfee is losing market share across all products and Geo's. The previous CEO cut costs to the bone to make McAfee more attractive to a prospective buyer and R&D has really suffered.

Advice to Senior ManagementManagement from Intel should come in and clean house and fire all sales management. It's an absolute disaster there.

Experienced web developers should look elsewhere

    Web Developer (Current Employee)
    Santa Clara, CA

Pros- Overall, nice and friendly people to work with
    - Nice building
    - Might be a good place for a new developer to get his feet wet, then move on
    - Large, well known company, decent products
    - Owned by Intel
    - Dev teams collaborate well

Cons- Large, well known company, that is slowly falling behind
    - No concept of team building within the dev group. Managers do not interact with the employees much (only to criticize).
    - A lot of meetings about meetings
    - Below average pay
    - Minimal training opportunities. Very stingy on the budgets for training, etc.
    - Minimal, if any, recognition for a job well done. They WILL, however, let you know when you screw up.
    - Extremely poor project planning
    - Antiquated hardware and software for development (interestingly, the spreadsheet-reading managers always have the latest laptops, though)
    - Dev managers have no decision making power. They must ask for approval for everything. They seem to just care about their own self with no regards to the people reporting to them. We are all just warm bodies.
    - Dev managers do not know the meaning of "how to motivate employees" (nor do they care), nor the meaning of "accountability".

Advice to Senior Management- You have too many dev managers that seemingly do nothing. In fact, too many managers period.
    - You should also do less talking about what you're going to do to improve things, and actually do it!

    Not great and sometimes "ew"

    Employee (Current Employee)

    ProsGood work life balance
    Some nice perks and programs

ConsHypocritical messages about employee empowerment (talk a lot but don't walk the talk).
Underlying sexism in culture - not overt but it's absolutely there
    Can't get anything done
Way too much top down decision making

Advice to Senior ManagementIf you want the culture and results you say you do, behavior needs to change starting at the top. Employees are smarter than you think

McAfee is not a good place to work

    Infrastructure Engineer (Current Employee)
    Beaverton, OR

ProsFirst Thursday free beer, Fee Muffins on Friday, casual work environment , that's about it.

ConsIn 6 months they fires 3 people and two more just walk out in the Labs division alone. McAfee's Virus detection rates are very low, they are loosing money, there clients are leaving Not a good organization to work for. Plus Intel owns them and there is talk of them folding them in and big laying offs

Advice to Senior ManagementThere are too may managers and none of them know anything about enterprise IT operations. You would think a company like McAfee would have world class IT, Not so much

Learned a few things from my coworkers but it's not a place it create a long career.

Insides Sales Account Manager Corporate (Current Employee)
    Plano, TX

ProsSome cool, friendly and smart co-workers, plus they offer free sodas.

ConsHorrible workplace environment, terrible boiler room like pods with low walls that allow for no privacy or professionalism. People there especially the inside sales managers have no professional etiquette and wil stand over you distracting you trying to get you off the phone so that they can disturb you with something unimportant. That's pretty nifty especially when your job is phone sales. If you have no technology industry experience it's a good place to get your foot in the door. They love to hire the incompetent and then promote them to management. But if you don't get promoted within 2 years get out and go somewhere else for more money because it means you're doing your job too well mad like I said before McAfee likes to promote the incompetent. Compensation is much higher at many McAfee competitors in the area and the workplace environment is more professional. My manager spends most of his days walking around drinking coffee and socializing with the other managers and contributing nothing to his own paycheck.

Advice to Senior ManagementFire all the inside sales management in Plano and start over from scratch. They're playing a numbers game to make themselves look good but have no clue on how to really lead.
