I worked at McAfee as a contractor (more than an year)

    Pros

McAfee has the best technology out there in the security industry, there are a lot of talented individuals scattered throughout the organization. Marketing this technology in new and unique ways was an excellent way to begin my career.

    Cons

As a contractor at McAfee I felt expendable, useless, despite the fact that I was running a team and providing value that stretched all the way across and up the marketing organization and beyond. McAfee does not invest in its lower-level talent and much of the time upper management becomes complacent with the status quo, not willing to financially support new endeavors and hoping for the best from tired old ways. It's a conservative culture, and advancement (especially in the marketing organization) is difficult, if not impossible.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Invest more in your lower-level employees - talent won't stick around incontrovertibly (especially in the valley). Try new things and don't be afraid of failure. Open up opportunities for your lower-level talent that you need to stick around to continue to compete.

Lack of consistent vision in upper management tied with inability to execute.

    I worked at McAfee

    Pros

    Comparable compensation.
    Positive work/life balance.
    Friendly atmosphere and people.

    Cons

Utter lack of ownership allowed to development. Everyone is treated as interchangeable parts.
Easy to be pigeon-holed for life. Very little done to promote career growth or highlight opportunities within organization.
Lack of consistent vision means products fail due to mismanagement of resources and changing product course. That's OK... we'll just acquire a new company that has what we want...

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop following the trends. Set your own.
Stop acquiring companies to try to catch up. Acquisition history should have shown this is not a long-term successful strategy.
Stop annual layoffs. If you need to shift where the money goes, shift your people. Instead of just saying "people are our most important asset", show it.

I worked at McAfee full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Nice office environment. Cube farms are neatly arranged.

    Cons

Too many meetings. Some management very title-oriented and treat people below them like minions in how they communicate with them. Intimidation management. My own boss was on vacation at least 4 times in the 5 months I was there, often times leaving things unattended.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Forecast better to avoid training people up just to let them go!

    Pros

If you need a job it pays the bills

    Cons

IT management has no direction. Instead of fixing problems they look for people to blame. Will work you till you drop and don't care.

I worked at McAfee full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Free soft drinks, good place for someone to get their start in IT sales. Good health benefits, and PTO (when they let you take it) Lot's of great people stuck there though... Good products

    Cons

Executive management are some of the worst humans you will ever meet.
While they stress work life management you WILL be working Christmas eve and the day after
Can't get promoted without being part of the "bros" club, or a girl with lose morals.
    Very low pay for industry...
Spends money on stupid things like lavish parties with private concerts with rock stars.
One of the most bloated top heavy companies I have ever heard of...

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Fire about 90% of upper and middle management, starting with that rat they call a leader.

    Pros

Compensation, investment in training, relaxed culture.

    Cons

Leadership in IT needs serious overhaul. Promotions are not based on merit or accomplishments but rather favoritism and politics. First place to take a closer look are the groups where multiple people leave same manager.

I worked at McAfee full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

There are pockets of really great people, and some cool security technology if you are lucky to land in the right role with the right support from the organization.

    Cons

Comments are for the B2B/enterprise security business. So many empty promises for change, lackluster leaders, and uncertainty what Intel might abruptly alter, makes for shaky grounds for any career.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Talk is cheap, trust has to be earned. Too many great people left because the organization favors those who plug-away vs. those who want to make positive changes.
