I have been working at McAfee full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

    Good work life balance
    Some nice perks and programs

    Cons

Hypocritical messages about employee empowerment (talk a lot but don't walk the talk).
Underlying sexism in culture - not overt but it's absolutely there
    Can't get anything done
Way too much top down decision making

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you want the culture and results you say you do, behavior needs to change starting at the top. Employees are smarter than you think

I have been working at McAfee as a contractor (less than a year)

    Pros

First Thursday free beer, Fee Muffins on Friday, casual work environment , that's about it.

    Cons

In 6 months they fires 3 people and two more just walk out in the Labs division alone. McAfee's Virus detection rates are very low, they are loosing money, there clients are leaving Not a good organization to work for. Plus Intel owns them and there is talk of them folding them in and big laying offs

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There are too may managers and none of them know anything about enterprise IT operations. You would think a company like McAfee would have world class IT, Not so much

I have been working at McAfee

    Pros

Some cool, friendly and smart co-workers, plus they offer free sodas.

    Cons

Horrible workplace environment, terrible boiler room like pods with low walls that allow for no privacy or professionalism. People there especially the inside sales managers have no professional etiquette and wil stand over you distracting you trying to get you off the phone so that they can disturb you with something unimportant. That's pretty nifty especially when your job is phone sales. If you have no technology industry experience it's a good place to get your foot in the door. They love to hire the incompetent and then promote them to management. But if you don't get promoted within 2 years get out and go somewhere else for more money because it means you're doing your job too well mad like I said before McAfee likes to promote the incompetent. Compensation is much higher at many McAfee competitors in the area and the workplace environment is more professional. My manager spends most of his days walking around drinking coffee and socializing with the other managers and contributing nothing to his own paycheck.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Fire all the inside sales management in Plano and start over from scratch. They're playing a numbers game to make themselves look good but have no clue on how to really lead.

    I worked at McAfee

    Pros

    Pay and benefits are OK.
    Good cafeteria.

    Cons

    Specific to the IT department:
    1. Most of the mid-level to senior level managers don't know what they are doing, and are terrible at evaluating talents. They typically say the right things in the corporate communications, but do the exact opposite in reality.
    2. It is a very political place, you have to watch your back constantly to survive.
    3. Don't believe the propaganda that encourages internal job change BS, it is a trap to draw out those who are unhappy so as to fire them.
    4. Sucking up to your boss and his boss, putting a spin on everything to make it look rosy get a manager promoted really fast, even though he screws up everything along the way, as long as it is pinned on others.
    5. Low level employees get treated badly with very little respect. Loyalty to the company does not mean anything, if a new manager wants to bring his cronies, you can be fired to make room.
    6. If you have any integrity left, you will have to put it away or prepare to get fired.
    7. Very few talented people stay around, that tells a lot.
    8. Good managers are hard to find and they don't survive very long.
    9. Most managers won't give you chance for training and self development.
    10. There is little SDLC methodology in place to ensure quality work. You will be chasing your tail just to keep the systems up and running
    11. India-based employees are treated much better than US-based (10% raises vs 2% raises), and the rationale being the India-based employees have more options. Well, if you are good, you have plenty of option in US too! But they assume you are desperate for the job and will bend backwards to keep it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get rid of the middle management (senior managers to VP) in IT, start with a fresh batch. Otherwise, things will never change. You business is actually being hindered by the management mess in IT and the systems are held together with duck tapes not proper software engineering.

Truly enable the employee to voice dissatisfaction against their managers without fear for retaliation.

    Pros

People and work experience are at the top of the list. The quotas were not set up to reward performance. If it wasn't for those reasons, I would have left sooner.

    Cons

Everything. The management there was clueless and didn't know how to make quotas for the sales field. Everything was set up to fail.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get a clue. Take a management course and learn how to work with employees. Structure comp plans accordingly and you'll lose less people.

    I worked at McAfee

    Pros

McAfee Plano is located near the Dallas North Tollway and the 121 toll.
It is business casual attire. Cafe downstairs for quick lunches.

    Cons

    Vacation-
You are granted vacation days, but good luck trying to take them. Instead, they give you mandatory days off and make you use that as your vacation. That would be workable if you knew what days they would be, BUT you don't. It completely depends on how bad their financials look and how desperate they are to cut expenses to meet Wall Streets expectations. So go out tonight and have a great time; take another shot while bellied up at the bar, because you might just find out you are off tomorrow.

    Work Load-
If you are considering McAfee, you might also consider joining the Armed Forces; at least one will help pay for your college. They will both take you away from your family more than anyone would prefer. If you like working 50+ hour weeks while your manager leaves at 4:59pm everyday then you will love McAfee. If you like literally sweating at a keyboard just to get the job complete while your co-workers share pictures of their Farmville... you get the point.

    Work-Life Balance-
    The answer is no.

Overall; it was a horrible experience. I would not recommend this company to anyone looking for a job.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Just quit! Let them higher someone who cares about people instead of bonuses and bending numbers in order to stay bonus eligible. Give the people their 401k and maybe offer a match since smaller companies can do it so should you. I am now at a much smaller company with much better benefits, much better pay, we actually get to take vacation days, and nearly everyone loves their job. Oh, and thanks for laying me off! I've never been happier!!

    Great product. Some awesome people

    Cons

Mid Level management is mico mannaging or mis manageing

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Let people do the jobs you hired them to do. Do NOT allow every item to be a concern of a Director or a VP. DO NOT promote or hire people with NO Inter personal skills to be a manager of people. They might be a brilliant Architect or Engineer BUT that doesn't make it easy to communicate with them.

    Pros

    A leader in the space.

    Cons

The company doesn't reward good work with promotions or pay raises and it won't hesitate to let a good, loyal, long lasting employee go in spite of good performance reviews.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Devote more energy to putting out a good product and show some loyalty to employees who show the same.

Very bad management style in Revenue Accounting
    No work life balance

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management training key to making this a good place to work. Communication can be improved. Departments work in Silos. No career paths for mid-level management. Few promotions from within. CFO average life at MFE is about 1 year?

    I worked at McAfee

    Pros

Great pay if you negotiate going in the door, good benefits, excellent products, continued company growth and acquisition, Sales Engineers are top notch. Upper level management came from EMC and have aggressive principles, such as everyone sells. They do work very hard, are focused on their enemy, and make money. If you can survive McAfee and get it on your resume, you have a ticket within the rest of the security industry.

    Cons

Upper level management is oblivious to the abuse the mid-level management receives and how it trckles down to the ranks. Very egotistically oriented. If you arent the "shiny penny" or the guru who invented security, you wont fit in. Human Resources provides no assistance to good employees who are railroaded out the door during "restructuring". They are afraid of management, its a pity. HR turns over more than Sales. Keep in mind, you are on your own. In a one year timespan, restructing occurred 3 times at the loss of multiple very good Directors, engineers, and business development managers. This took place prior to the current economic environment and was continually implemented for political reasons. Politics are rampant and vicious because it is carried out subtly and low key in the background. You dont know you've been shot until its happened. The good ole boy system is in full swing, McAfee is very cliquish. CYA is the edict of every day survival and informing on someone will keep you in the game. Good managers last 6 - 12 months even if they're performing well. On a whim, management will determine you need to be replaced. Upper management is so focused on killing off Symantec and stockpiling cash that they lose site of the other important issues around them. How much money do you need once you're at $1B in cash? The next goal was $1.5B at all costs. If you work here, you will have no home life, you're expected to be available continually, travel unmercifully, and take any abuse handed to you because you're being paid. It can be difficult to accomplish even the most simple tasks because policies have been implemented that are absurd: IT implemented a standard imaged laptop (COE) enterprise-wide using McAfee tools. While its good to use your own products, you have absolutely NO administrative capability to even add a printer without opening a helpdesk ticket. They also implemented Data Loss Prevention (DLP) on the computers so EVERYTHING you do, print, copy or save is trackable. Be very careful. Engineers use VMWare, additional swappable boot drives, and hacks to bypass this security. Its the extreme in security paranoia based environments. Security is one thing, this is over the top. Sales employees are under great stress to survive and must compete against each other constantly. Only the very top employees get pay raises or promotions, and some schmoozing has to take place to make that occur. Some engineers have not had raises in years. Employee cuts take place just before the new year, every year, usually between Christmas and New Years, to minimize the cost of who attends the January sales kickoff. Extremely rough for everyone at the holidays, but there is no remorse. New employees are then hired in to attend the kickoff. Engineers must leave to get that promotion, however at the threat of leaving its possible to gain a sizeable pay raise. That says it all. Its a big company and no one cares whether you survive or leave. Note that when you leave, your name is erased and you will never be mentioned again. There is life after McAfee...

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay more attention to what's going on at the VP level and below. The good people down there are the ones that are keeping your company running.
