I life changing job

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at McCormick & Schmick's

ProsThere are "some" good managers, while others lack loyalty to employees. You will grow some thick skin before you leave.

ConsIn any big corporation there is too much micro- management. Everyone needs to have personality and they found away to take it.

Advice to Senior ManagementAllow your staff to have some freedoms within their jobs and tables. To much structure is detrimental.

On The Road Toward Extinction...

Restaurant Manager (Current Employee)
Denver, CO

I have been working at McCormick & Schmick's full-time for more than a year

ProsEvery septuagenarian that makes up the base clientele hasn't completely died off yet.

ConsNot unlike their overgrown antiseptic predecessors (see Steak and Ale, Chi Chi's), M&S is rapidly joining the ranks of once-successful restaurant business models that fell prey to stagnation. Having grown large enough to be consumed by the Landry's impersonal corporotized behemoth, this once relevant eatery of the business class and local middle-heeled has unfortunately fallen prey to the mediocrity that resting on the laurels of one's past success tends to bring. If you enjoy eating the same unimaginative cuisine your grandparents raved about in their heyday while being surrounded by all the ambiance a 1970's midwestern basement can muster, then this is the place for you. Catch it while you can, though...Because history dictates a shortened tenure for this once-iconic brand.

I have been working at McCormick & Schmick's part-time for more than a year

ProsGreat money, after being there for a while you quickly figure out that if you do what they want, you can have what you want.

ConsYou are just a number, you find that out quickly after reading the Forbes interview with the owner. Don't expect anything more

Went from valued employee to just a number measured by membership card sales

Server (Current Employee)
Portland, OR

I have been working at McCormick & Schmick's part-time for more than 5 years

ProsFresh squeezed juice in cocktail drinks. It's a job so I suppose it is better than no job of working overnight in a warehouse.

ConsNationwide corporate menu, no more local selections of wine and down to only a couple Oregon beers on draft. Food is over-priced and hard to be proud of anymore. Open every day of the year. 8 year employee was fired recently for a bad shopper report. It was bad due to the fact that this person had 10 tables going at once because management was trying to cut labor to avoid upper management from breathing down their necks. Too bad, they were really good at their job. Everybody that is good is quitting.

Bad all around

Server (Current Employee)
Providence, RI

I have been working at McCormick & Schmick's part-time for more than a year

ProsIt was a job that sometimes paid my bills

ConsThe knowingly served old/bad food, only cared about you when you went over 40 hours, terrible pay to lower-level staff but managers sat around eating all day and talked about their bonuses.

overall, alright

Server (Current Employee)
Houston, TX

I have been working at McCormick & Schmick's part-time for less than a year

Prosppa is pretty high ~$55 at night and $25 at lunch. lots of business people come in for lunch. cocktail gets really busy. good menu, extensive wine list.

Consmy biggest complaint is that the management does not communicate with each other or with the staff, especially when its busy and stressful. there are explosive personalities. corporate can be nitpicky and arrogant, but i think its getting better as they clean out the bad guys.

Advice to Senior Managementmanagement needs to treat employees with respect and not fly off the handle when trouble comes. creating a positive work environment should be more of a priority.

It pays the bills, but there is no practicality or logic with the system they have in place.
