"Has-been" company, management has already run company into ground, a matter of time before they close their doors.

    I worked at McDermott full-time

    Pros

Co-workers, lower management/ non management people level mostly helpful. People there for 25+ years (mostly all laid off now) were a HUGE resource.

    Cons

No work. Barely any at all in Houston office. Lots of people on overhead. Subsea jobs abysmal, vessels are non competitive when compared to others in industry.

They have laid off most of their experienced engineers. Lay off your senior management/HR managment first, not these guys that have been loyal to you 25-30 years. LISTEN TO YOUR EMPLOYEES, especially the loyal ones

Current employees should get out before its too late....

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

For once, think before you make a decision.

I worked at McDermott full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

McDermott was a pretty nice place to work back when Deason was the CEO. Most people were friendly and pay was competitive. Benefits were pretty good. All that has changed now, and it is not just because of the recession.

    Cons

After Deason left upper level management (Executives, VPs, HR managers) viewed engineers as simply warm bodies that could be hired and let go at any time with no consequences to productivity. It actually felt like they even had feelings of contempt for them. They had no clue how engineering worked or how to be profitable. They would make radical changes simply to copy what others in the industry were doing with no thought as to why. They seemed to get caught in a cycle of "we cannot get good jobs because we don't have enough decent people. We don't have money for our staff because we don't have good jobs and therefore we will lay off a bunch of people. Repeat."

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Good luck to the new CEO - he'll need it. He really just needs to clean house and get rid of the current upper management/VPs/HR managers that came in with Johnson. Their policies and attitudes are toxic to the company and productivity.

    I worked at McDermott

    Pros

    J. Ray is a good company to work for if, your in the "In Crowd". In the field front line management is great and works with the employees in the field. Good compensation for employees usually and most of the employees in the field are friendly, competent, and hard workers

    Cons

Upper management needs help. There is hardly any communication between upper management and field supervision. The only thing that is communicated is "negative" and not to many positives. Most of the employees have the "fear" that they might be next to be fired or layed off. It's a very "top down" company and field employees cannot make decisions on their own without worrying about repercussion from upper management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Senior management needs to communicate with the workers with face to face talking.... not messages, emails or anything else. They need to take the time to meet with the workers and discuss any problems they may have, rather than decide without knowledge of what's really going on in the field!

    Pros

Global opportunities , market salaries and travel

    Cons

Be proactive and not reactive.....huge political divide between global fleet employees and regional office based employees.....you need to pay people based on talent and not on nationality

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pls look deeply at how some departments carry out their work

    Pros

Competitive pay package with comprehensive benefit package. International reputable contractor with a long history and track record.

    Cons

Exceptional high turn over for new starters
    Bully style management
    Fear culture
Lack of trrust in their people
    Good old marine boys culture
    Lack of innovation

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management should realize the importance of people and using effective management styles to get the best out of the organization. Just applying fear does not work, neither using outdated Jack Welch practices and fire 10% of the people. Quality of leadership goes a long way, just promoting young guys will not give this company the reforms it needs to remain competitive.
