Great opportunitys if the management can get their act together

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) Houston, TX

ProsWonderful employees, great knowledge base for those who want to get industry experience

ConsSome of the worst upper management I have seen - way to political for my taste, not enough clear direction

Advice to Senior ManagementGet a plan and stick with it - encourage your staff to do their job instead of being afraid to loose it

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

Working at McDermott in the many positions I held taught me how to be versitile and multi task.

Logistics and Trade Compliance Specialist (Current Employee) Morgan City, LA

ProsI was able to work flexible hours and learned many different job duties in my 23 years of services.

ConsDecisions are sometimes made without input from experienced and knowledgable employees.

Advice to Senior ManagementQuit hiring and trusting the word of an outsider. Go to the actual workers for their advise and opinions and react on their ideas or comments not someone who hasn't worked for the company longer than 15 years.

    The skinny on McDermott

Cost Estimate (Current Employee) Houston, TX

Prosgood job selections and the chance to work in exciting places. the client list is great and there are exciting opportunities.

Consthe salaries could be better, but benefits are ok. i have worked in better places, but i have also worked in worse places. the use of cubicles is not to everybodys liking, but the we are coping for the moment. I think they may be building a new building soon to help with all of this.

Great company experience but bad middle management

Engineer (Current Employee) Dubai (United Arab Emirates)

    ProsGreat company experience
nice people, supportive in many ways
the company's procedures, policies are under continuous improvement
    great development of employees

Conssalaries are not enough since the life expenses increasing
middle management fear for their positions
more than 4 fifths of the company force come from one country
racial forces work under the codes of ethics like work experience is supported on racial profiles
employees don't have a say on the HR policies
they can kick you out anytime

Advice to Senior Managementgive employees more job safety with the salaries/contracts security/HR policies. ethics enforcement into the work area rather than marketing for ethics. direct the middle management when setting task-wise goals for each employee and commit to development

Point of view from an entry level employee in Singapore office

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsSenior employees are easily approachable and willing to guide and advise us. Opportunities are plentiful too if you are willing to seek for it.

ConsRemunerations and compensations are definitely not close to the best in the industry, at least for an entry level employee. Haven't been in the company for long but already felt that motivation over here is not high.

Advice to Senior ManagementMore can definitely be done to raise motivational levels and create a more fun environment to work in which can increase the quality of work. This can definitely help in the future, especially when the company is undergoing restructuring. A good foundation starting from the employees can help to achieve the company goals more easily.

I've worked as a sub-contractor for McDermott globally since 1999

    Trainer Consultant (Current Employee)

ProsExcellent training opportunities for employees coupled with stringent safety policies.

ConsOften demanding and difficult procedures stand in the way of progress. Jobs are taking far too much time to complete than they should and obviously more costly.

Advice to Senior ManagementLooking in from a supplier point of view, I find that internal administrative procedures take far too much time particularly in procurement. Often jobs are delayed or cancelled altogether because someone somewhere failed to hit a button on the your computerised system. I have experienced lack of necessary communication between individuals and departments. I could be wrong but it appears to me that employees are more concerned with their job security rather than the good and benefit of the company. The old adage "too many cooks spoil the broth" also comes to mind. Give the authority to purchase back to those that need the product or service, don't leave it to someone in the procurement department to hold things up, they do not understand the real issues and fail to meet deadlines.

Medium size company in a cyclical market

IT Manager (Current Employee) Singapore (Singapore)

ProsPeers, and staff are great to work with
    Opportunities exist

ConsLoyalty and Moral have fallen due to recent HR changes, much less about the employees than in the past

Advice to Senior ManagementLook at what HR policies and practices are doing to your organization, things aren't as rosy as you like to think. Loyalty is no longer a factor at MCD

Good place for a few years to kick start.

Subsea Engineer (Former Employee) Dubai (United Arab Emirates)

    Prosgrowth
    learning opportunity
    zero tax
    can go anywhere from here

ConsThere is gross difference between salaries of Asians vs. People from Americas or EU (Graduate Engineers get more pay than Engineers of 5years experience).
    No work to life balance.
Very rigorous work regime (you have to clock nearly 50 hrs per week).
There is overtime shown on paper but it is manipulated in such way that you don’t get any extra money for that.
Lot of abuse of HR policies for the company.

Advice to Senior Managementbe fair to all!
