Great place to work, great people to work with.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Houston, TX

I have been working at McDermott

ProsMiddle management is engaged and very supportive of what is happening in the trenches. The environment is pretty laid back. I really enjoy the atmosphere.

ConsThe benifits have been cut back due to the economy and spinning off Babcok & Wilcox just over a year ago. International travel policies have changed forthe worse. Flying 15 to 24 hours in economy for bussiness travel is unproductive.

Generally a good company to work for, but room for improvement

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at McDermott

ProsSeem to have high employee retention rate in an itinerant industry (actions, words etc)
Lots of emphasis on safety
Have consistently let me pay my bills since I started with them 7 years ago (regular work)
Slow but consistent investment in new equipment
Investment in employees regarding sponsorship in training
Fairly flexible work/leave rotation

ConsToo much paperwork for everyone from coal face upwards, both for daily documentation and policy/procedure stuff
Lots of compulsory in-house safety orientated courses, much repetition and sometimes not relevant
No pay rise or bonus for a few years

Advice to Senior ManagementCut the paper work. There is too much for anyone to read which results in cut/paste of the same spelling/procedure mistakes in subsequent documents.
Reduce/combine the number of in-house courses
Put the older management guys on an IT course!

Graduate Engineer (Former Employee)
Dubai (United Arab Emirates)

I worked at McDermott full-time for more than a year

Prosyou learn from different departments in the company for three years as a graduate engineer along with workshops and trainings to enhance the experience.

Consi personally think three years is too long for a graduate program, and it benifts the company more than the individual. it is good if you're passionate about long term commitment in the company.

Overall, great place to work. And you will work, a lot.

Field Engineer (Former Employee)
Baku (Azerbaijan)

I worked at McDermott full-time for more than a year

ProsVery friendly work environment and people. Almost family like, at least at overseas locations.
Most more experienced co-workers and managers were happy to give advice and assistance.
Good pay and benefits, although fairly normal for the industry.
Plenty of company events/parties that promote camaraderie.

ConsVery little standard training, like learning to swim by being thrown into the deep end. They are willing to send you to courses, but you have to ask for them.
Sometimes hard to effect change, many things are done that way just because they always have been. Again, being a little pushy can get it done.
On shore work schedule was supposed to be 5 1/2 days a week, with one Saturday off a month. That half day was always closer to a full day and almost no one took that Saturday off, even when there wasn't much work to be done.

Advice to Senior ManagementEncourage a better work/life balance. Everyone understands deadlines, but when there's not a pressing one, encourage people to take the available time off.
Provide more job-specific training to new hires. Especially new grads in entry level positions.
