    Pros

The teams are collaborative, open and associates are given a lot of responsibility early on. Also, a lot of intelligent and hard working people here who care about having a positive impact on clients.

    Cons

My team recently went through some transitions with management, which is always tough, but it was handled with professionalism. Management is open to hearing feedback and extremely accessible at every level.

    Pros

McGladrey has an excellent brand identity and they provide opportunities to network nationally with counterparts in different geographic locations. They offer all of the major services so an employee can really obtain a diverse public accounting experience.

    Cons

It is a big firm and at times an employee may feel like just a number. However, McGladrey makes a decent effort to provide recreational activities for its' employees such as golf outings and holiday parties. Such a relationship between the employee and employer should be expected in such a large organization.

    Advice to Management

Maintain the same forward outlook on the industry. The firm seems well-positioned to continue its' growth. Keep investing in your employees.

    Pros

Workplace is very relaxed and comfortable. Can joke around with co-workers

    Cons

Salary isn't in line with other competitors

    Advice to Management

attempt to adjust salary to match other competitors. We understand it can't be exactly the same but keep it in the ballpark.

Flexible work environment, fair compensation. All the team members are very willing to help you advance in your career. Partners have a great open door policy.

    Cons

Consulting is a hard-driving area of McGladrey. There is a large focus on billable hours.

    Pros

I found most of the people to be great, benefits were competitive and the work environment in my office was great.

    Cons

Due to how the firm grew, many offices still retain the culure of the respective old firm from that office. This resulted in an inconsistent qualty of people/attitude across the firm. Also didn't seem to have the bet people running the technology side of the house, although the IT folks in the trenches were dedicated and

    Advice to Management

What's up with the name change? You just spent years and millions telling people that McGladrey was a player!

    Pros

Really great people, competitive pay. Offices are really nice. Gained a lot of experience in the auditing field.

    Cons

Not the most structured internship experience. Often had no work to do and would spend my time browsing the internet.

    Advice to Management

Give a little bit more structure to the program, and assign partners/upper level employees to interns as well

    Pros

Great overall culture. Co-workers genuinely enjoy each other's company, to the point where friendships extend beyond the office. Happy hours and social events are regularly scheduled within the company but people get together by choice as well. Being in the trenches with people that you can share a genuine laugh with makes the late nights much more bearable.

Salaries are competitive and in line with other major accounting firms.

Career opportunities and promotions are very obtainable if you put the years in.

    Cons

The typical grudges against public accounting apply. 8 hour days are virtually non existent, as would be expected. The worst part is the hierarchy of power. If your superior still has work to do, you aren't going anywhere.

    Advice to Management

Trust that the employees you have chosen to hire are capable of getting quality work done. The number of hours of work a superior has should not dictate the number of hours it takes everyone else to get their work done.

  10. A Middle-Market "Big Four" Feel

    Pros

Although McGladrey is largest middle-market public accounting firm, the promotion process is much less structured than firms on this size. For example, instead of only getting promoted to senior associate after 2 years, if you express your desire for a promotion and work with your career advisor to accomplish specific goals, you could potentially get the promotion much quicker. Also, McGladrey doesn't limit the amount of each level of employee which they employ, which means you don't have to wait for position to open up in order to be promoted.

    Cons

McGladrey has been growing tremendously in the past few years, which is fantastic as far as job security is concerned; however, the tremendous growth also means the company is understaffed in its highest growth areas. This severe understaffing in certain groups doesn't seem to be getting better any time soon due to turnover and what seems like no desire to address this issue by partners. This makes busy seasons even worse than those experienced by the Big Four - even though this is a middle-market-focused company - so those seeking a smaller-fiirm feel should no longer come to this firm.

    Advice to Management

My advice to management would be to listen to avoid becoming a "Big Four-esque" company. McGladrey markets itself to potential employees as a middle market public accounting firm, but is quickly moving toward the feel of a Big Four company with respect to the number of busy season hours-per-week, lack of work-life balance, and level of disgruntlement for lower-level staff.

    Pros

Autonomy, growth potential, connection with middle-market clients, experiencing the entire project from start to finish, staff technical ability, lack of egos

    Cons

Confusing matrix organizational structure, lack of compensation visibility, antiquated IT infrastructure

    Advice to Management

Investment in IT infrastructure will increase efficiency and employee satisfaction, basically paying for itself. Include more levels other than partner regarding company's strategic vision and policy decision making
