    Pros

Lots of opportunities to learn the field, expand skill set, and explore all facets of the media industry. Management is generally very excited about pursuing new ideas and initiatives.

    Cons

The pay is the lowest I've seen from any broadcast group. Even after the multiple mergers, employees in original Media General stations saw no up-tick in salaries. The MG stations become a training ground--employees come, build experience, then get poached by Hearst, Raycom, and others because they offer more reasonable salaries. With the increase in health care premiums, many workers are looking at secondary incomes outside of the stations, which hurts focus, morale, and on-air product. I would love to make a lifetime career out of working at my MG station, but there's no way I could afford it on such a low salary with only 2% increases each year.

    Advice to Management

Seriously consider revisiting compensation minimums company-wide, not just for new employees.

    Pros

they have so much going on that they don't notice a lot, so it's easy to slide under the radar

    Cons

they are unstable and with the drop in their stock value, I was left up a creek wout a paddle

    Advice to Management

start making your management communicate with non management employees so everyone has a chance to know what is going on within the company and station

    Pros

It was good for a while, even through the rough furlough days. Pay is alright but could be much better.

    Cons

The top tier of management is disengaged and clueless.

    Advice to Management

Move on and stop trying to burn this institution down. Richmond burned once and that's enough.

    Pros

Own the top station in the market I live in.

    Cons

Getting time off is next to impossible, the hours are ridiculous (not quantity, just the schedule), and management is not understanding in the least that employees have personal lives. Also, the pay is not good either.

    Advice to Management

Show you employees that you care more by paying them a living wage, being fair, and treating them with more respect (even if this is their first job). Also understand that even though this is the news business, reporters/anchors/producers all do have family and friends.

    Pros

I enjoy working with my coworkers. I actually look forward to going to work. The work itself is not that stressful. My work site is in the South, amongst mild weather and low cost of living standards.

    Cons

The biggest downside is shift stabilization. Weekly schedules are rarely stable; most department employees are expected to maintain flexiblity as we run 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year. But this is to be expected in this type of environment.

    Advice to Management

Higher pay with more responsibility. Better healthcare benefit packages.

    Pros

I always had a fair amount of freedom. Do your job and you won't get bothered much. 3 weeks vacation after 3 years, 4 weeks after 10 years. You usually have what you need to work with, not much more. Pretty good benefits and PTO policy.

    Cons

Lots of changes at the corporate level, not sure if good or bad at this point. Small raises. Typical news media company. Lots of decisions being made by people who may not understand them.

    Advice to Management

Corporate restructuring currently going on - so not sure how that will change things. Make more of an effort to retain good employees.

    Pros

The pay is ok, and they have air conditioning inside.

    Cons

In sales you will be surrounded by snakes, more everyone will smile in your face and then bite you in the ass if you let your guard down. Also It is one of the places that when you start and a assistant then you will stay as one. The only way to move around to something new here is to leave.

    Pros

Product at one time was great. Nice people to work with. could have been a lifelong career.

    Cons

Management has no clue about changing times, the paper is not what it use to be.. They sit there and say we are the trib and advertisers need us. This company for years has been reactives as opposed to proactive. Through mismanagement from the top all the way down to the local sales managers has given the St. Pete Times the opportunity to take over the Tampa Bay market.

    Advice to Management

Look for new jobs because It's too late. This company will be shut down and the building and land will be sold. You handed over the market to the Times, hope you enjoye!

    Pros

Most coworkers make it a fun and enjoyable place to work.

    Cons

Don't take a job as an inside sales rep. The call center is managed by people that will tell you what you want to hear at the interview, and then it's "their way or the highway" once you're hired. They micro-manage you to death. They use fear and intimidation to beat down the rank and file. If you have talent and can produce, you will ultimately be looking for another job once again. You can't even move to another department, as they will squash all attempts. Their egos will not allow you to get the better of them. At the interview, be sure to ask about the "Dialing for Donuts" room.

    Advice to Management

There are too many people in supervisory positions that did not get to where they are through hard work and merit. Politics and the good old boy network are destroying your company. Do something before the Tampa Bay Times becomes the only paper in Tampa Bay. Listen to your employees at the lowest level. Don't rely on your managers to give you the real story.
