    Pros

    Own the top station in the market I live in.

    Cons

    Getting time off is next to impossible, the hours are ridiculous (not quantity, just the schedule), and management is not understanding in the least that employees have personal lives. Also, the pay is not good either.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Show you employees that you care more by paying them a living wage, being fair, and treating them with more respect (even if this is their first job). Also understand that even though this is the news business, reporters/anchors/producers all do have family and friends.

    not enough staff for the work, horrible work-life-balance, laughable relationships between colleagues.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Employees are people, too. They can't counteract the deplorable state of your industry just cause you stomped your feet and told them, too.

    Pros

    Some of the stations did let their employees go early on holidays and had station parties.

    Cons

    pay is not the best, the management is terrible ( good old boys network alive and well ), people who were in tight with "movers and shakers" got key jobs that otherwise would never get even considered, lots of pressure to "produce" and watching consultants parade in and out of the stations giving them the same tired and unproductive advice and walking out with LOADS of cash

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Quit worrying about YOUR pockets and start worrying about your employee's pockets. You worry about cost, yet your poor pay and conditions force employees to leave. You then hire a new person and they make mistakes and errors in learning that cost you MONEY.

    Health insurance, that's about it!

    Companies lack of desire to move forward with the 21st century. Inability to have freedom to be creative with ads as client desires

    Pros

    Most coworkers make it a fun and enjoyable place to work.

    Cons

    Don't take a job as an inside sales rep. The call center is managed by people that will tell you what you want to hear at the interview, and then it's "their way or the highway" once you're hired. They micro-manage you to death. They use fear and intimidation to beat down the rank and file. If you have talent and can produce, you will ultimately be looking for another job once again. You can't even move to another department, as they will squash all attempts. Their egos will not allow you to get the better of them. At the interview, be sure to ask about the "Dialing for Donuts" room.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    There are too many people in supervisory positions that did not get to where they are through hard work and merit. Politics and the good old boy network are destroying your company. Do something before the Tampa Bay Times becomes the only paper in Tampa Bay. Listen to your employees at the lowest level. Don't rely on your managers to give you the real story.

    Pros

    Media General continues to be a good place to develop young talent among reporters and producers.

    Cons

    There is no financial strategy for company web sites, so Media General depends on seasonal events like political campaigns and the Olympics as revenue generators.

    Please develop a digital strategy to take advantage of the growth opportunities that exist in that medium.

    Pros

    The compensation is decent, the co workers are great, and they have excellent on the job training.

    Cons

    It starts with the interview process for the Classified Department. The 2 managers that are in charge make you think that you will be treated like an adult professional. Then when you start they micromanage you to death. When you try to approach them about this they say it's our way or the highway. Not a professional way to handle your employees concerns. Combine that with the fact that if you do manage to stick it out you go nowhere in the company.

    Dump the mid level managers that have been in the same position for more than 10 years and bring in people that have a fresh perspective and some empathy for their workforce.

    Active TV news industry; Health Insurance Better than Average; Vacation Days; High news numbers; Sold off Newspapers!

    Cons

    No raises; Furloughs; No opportunity for Growth; No bonuses; Pay is not competitive with market; Mismanagement and lack of communication within departments.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Get new management. Not adaptable to changes in technology/ways of doing things. Still run on "old school" notion -- news flash, newspapers do not run the media industry anymore. Focus on things in specific markets. Utilize Social Media more.

    Pros

    Good Coffee, exceptional hours, good parking, professional atmosphere.

    Cons

    Antiquated system and technology, poor management, lack of ingenuity. Takes two weeks to access reports. Too many chiefs, not enough indians. Far fetched expectations with out a firm foundation to work from.

    Open your minds and doors to new ideas and spend some time and money in IT.
