Career employee that left after seeing the same old mistakes and don't care attitude by Mgmt.

    Engineering (Former Employee)
    Savannah, GA

ProsSome of the stations did let their employees go early on holidays and had station parties.

Conspay is not the best, the management is terrible ( good old boys network alive and well ), people who were in tight with "movers and shakers" got key jobs that otherwise would never get even considered, lots of pressure to "produce" and watching consultants parade in and out of the stations giving them the same tired and unproductive advice and walking out with LOADS of cash

Advice to Senior ManagementQuit worrying about YOUR pockets and start worrying about your employee's pockets. You worry about cost, yet your poor pay and conditions force employees to leave. You then hire a new person and they make mistakes and errors in learning that cost you MONEY.

Locked in the movie "ground hog day"

    Sales (Former Employee)
    Spartanburg, SC

    ProsHealth insurance, that's about it!

ConsCompanies lack of desire to move forward with the 21st century. Inability to have freedom to be creative with ads as client desires

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

A company in decline ... retrenching and holding fast to outdated business models

    Online Editor (Former Employee)
    Tampa, FL

ProsCompensation is competitive in the market

ConsPlaying a losing game in today's media marketplace

Advice to Senior ManagementThere is more to news delivery than the paper that lands in the driveway and the news you put on TV based on your schedule ... get with the times

    Sad

    Account Executive (Current Employee)
    Tampa, FL

ProsMost coworkers make it a fun and enjoyable place to work.

ConsDon't take a job as an inside sales rep. The call center is managed by people that will tell you what you want to hear at the interview, and then it's "their way or the highway" once you're hired. They micro-manage you to death. They use fear and intimidation to beat down the rank and file. If you have talent and can produce, you will ultimately be looking for another job once again. You can't even move to another department, as they will squash all attempts. Their egos will not allow you to get the better of them. At the interview, be sure to ask about the "Dialing for Donuts" room.

Advice to Senior ManagementThere are too many people in supervisory positions that did not get to where they are through hard work and merit. Politics and the good old boy network are destroying your company. Do something before the Tampa Bay Times becomes the only paper in Tampa Bay. Listen to your employees at the lowest level. Don't rely on your managers to give you the real story.

Media General produces good journalism, but the company was not prepared for the digital age.

    Digital Media (Former Employee)
    Richmond, VA

ProsMedia General continues to be a good place to develop young talent among reporters and producers.

ConsThere is no financial strategy for company web sites, so Media General depends on seasonal events like political campaigns and the Olympics as revenue generators.

Advice to Senior ManagementPlease develop a digital strategy to take advantage of the growth opportunities that exist in that medium.

    Bait and Switch

    Account Executive (Current Employee)
    Tampa, FL

ProsThe compensation is decent, the co workers are great, and they have excellent on the job training.

ConsIt starts with the interview process for the Classified Department. The 2 managers that are in charge make you think that you will be treated like an adult professional. Then when you start they micromanage you to death. When you try to approach them about this they say it's our way or the highway. Not a professional way to handle your employees concerns. Combine that with the fact that if you do manage to stick it out you go nowhere in the company.

Advice to Senior ManagementDump the mid level managers that have been in the same position for more than 10 years and bring in people that have a fresh perspective and some empathy for their workforce.

It started good, got bad, then tripped down the rabbit hole to hit the awful bottom.

    Producer (Former Employee)
    Spartanburg, SC

ProsActive TV news industry; Health Insurance Better than Average; Vacation Days; High news numbers; Sold off Newspapers!

ConsNo raises; Furloughs; No opportunity for Growth; No bonuses; Pay is not competitive with market; Mismanagement and lack of communication within departments.

Advice to Senior ManagementGet new management. Not adaptable to changes in technology/ways of doing things. Still run on "old school" notion -- news flash, newspapers do not run the media industry anymore. Focus on things in specific markets. Utilize Social Media more.

Epic Disappointment for ambitious sales minded professionals

    Account Executive (Former Employee)
    Richmond, VA

ProsGood Coffee, exceptional hours, good parking, professional atmosphere.

ConsAntiquated system and technology, poor management, lack of ingenuity. Takes two weeks to access reports. Too many chiefs, not enough indians. Far fetched expectations with out a firm foundation to work from.

Advice to Senior ManagementOpen your minds and doors to new ideas and spend some time and money in IT.

    Shambles!

Inside Sales Account Executive (Former Employee)
    Richmond, VA

ProsThere are a few good mid-level managers left, who somehow survived the lay-offs, and these managers are great to work for and have defended front-line workers as best they could.

ConsMassive waves of lay-offs have contributed to a cynical, dog-eat-dog culture. The pay is terrible and worsening. And management seems to be unable to cope gracefully with the Richmond Times-Dispatch's dwindling relevance.

Advice to Senior ManagementConcentrate on creating more niche market and hyper-local publications, online or print. Also, a restructuring of the entire classified advertising section is needed. Perhaps more free ads for advertisers are needed -- or something like the first X amount of lines are free, etc. It just seems pointless to pay for classified ads these days.

In four years I learned that Media General will not get past their news paper mentality.

    Central Broadcast Controller (Former Employee)
    Columbus, OH

ProsThey are spread out nicely around the south eastern united states. They have some nice perks for working in media and have lots of way to help other people.

ConsThey have tons of debt, tons of news papers, and no plan on how to make money. Their is little growth and constant threat of lay offs and furloughs. Internal transfers are never followed up on and would rather hire local less qualified people then keep current people.

Advice to Senior ManagementThey need a clear plan forward and stop asking employees for ideas or their money.
