I have been working at Medical College of Wisconsin full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

I really like the people I work with. The benefits are good and great vacation time for salaried staff.

    Cons

I don't get the sense that I will have much opportunity for upward mobility. Problematic employees are often given too many chances to shape up.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Really look to promoting from within. Also, market increases should be a common occurrence. Research coordinators are being contacted by outside agencies offering higher pay creating more turnover.

I have been working at Medical College of Wisconsin full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Job stability, good (but declining) health coverage. Excellent research facilities.

    Cons

Highly inbred academic environment. Some departments are staffed mainly by faculty who did all their training right here. Many, many underperforming staff in administrative and other support positions (even lab research personnel) are retained despite embarrassingly low productivity and incompetence.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Adopt some rigorous standards for performance and abandon the non-stop chanting about diversity. Stop promoting every faculty failure to a newly-created deanlet position - terminate a few people and some of the mediocre faculty will step it up, if they can.

I worked at Medical College of Wisconsin

    Pros

Interesting work with research and patient care as well as educating the next generation of physicians and researchers and health care professionals.

    Cons

In the past the excellent benefits off set the low pay but recent changes have slowly eroded the benefit package while retaining the low compensation base. In addition, the decentralized organization allows for department administration to unevenly administer corporate policy.

  5. Wonderful research and clinical experts, but lacking resources

I have been working at Medical College of Wisconsin full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Faculty have diverse areas of expertise and are open to collaboration across disciplines; wonderful access to medical care through MCW-affiliated providers; organization is always growing and improving

    Cons

Some research resources are lacking (journal article access, etc) compared with larger research institutions; not all research centers valued equally by the administration; health insurance coverage for non-MCW providers is insufficient

I have been working at Medical College of Wisconsin full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    Great healthcare benefits,Great 401K options

    Cons

Low Salary, no raises given only cost of living increase at most. Work-Life Balance was poor. The better you were at your job, the more you were expected to do without any compensation.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Promote those who are excellent workers. Pay people what they are worth. Get rid of the "rotten apples" who bring down the whole team. Promote a "team environment" and make the workplace more fun.

I worked at Medical College of Wisconsin full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

A Medical School that continues to emerge as a premier school. Excellent benefit package.

    Cons

Toxic and unfriendly work environment and culture on campus. Internal politics among the worst I have experienced in my career.

I have been working at Medical College of Wisconsin full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Overall some of the best people I have met in life.

    Cons

Like most say. There are managerial roles where the thinking of the 1940's is a ok mindset. Those bad seeds protect and stick together. Human resources will only step in and help if they have violated your human rights. They won't even allow you to prove your right. Really sad because I actually would love to stay here. Those bad seeds along with HR left a bad taste with me. Ruined my thoughts of this place.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Longevity doesn't mean someone is doing there job correctly. Check out the people that have been sitting and coasting to retirement. It's not right how some employees are treated.

I have been working at Medical College of Wisconsin full-time

    Pros

The benefits are great and my colleagues are awesome!!

    Cons

The pay needs to be more competitive. The research is slow moving and at times it is hard to get motivated.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management does a great job bring the department together with various events.

I have been working at Medical College of Wisconsin full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Good benefits and the facilty is nice. Direct supervisors are good for the most part.

    Cons

Human Resources is a disaster and should be avoided at all costs. Leadership needs to be put in line. There's too many managers and not enough staff. When one of my managers left they were replaced by 3 new people who supposedly still can't get the job done and considering hiring a 4th person. Really hard to move up within the college. Pay is below average.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Cut back on management not staff. There's no need to take doctors that you're trying to recruit out for $50-$100 a plate dinners; they'll come based on the institution not the quality of steak you bought them. Listen to staff employees when they complain about a manager; when a department burns through 6-7 people for one position in 5 years or less there may be an issue.
