10 years in the field at Medtronic

Sales Representative (Former Employee)

I worked at Medtronic full-time for more than 8 years

ProsGreat technology and reputable products. Ethical company.

ConsGood old boys club. Little diversity and few women in management positions. No career progression path for field employees. Pay is low in the industry.

Advice to Senior ManagementAccountability - need to let the low performers go.

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

The company, values, mission statement and experience overall made the company a good place to work.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Medtronic full-time

ProsMission statement demonstrates caring for the users of the products and the pursuit of high quality and reliability of the products. New management is ensuring DRM principles are being implemented at all facilities and are targeting new markets in Asia. The company is flexible with work hours as long as the objectives are being met.

ConsUpper & middle management are risk averse due to compliance concerns of government regulations which is impacting company market share. Product development cycles are typically longer than 12-18 months and the company is chasing competitors instead of leading the market with new product innovation and cost reduced product in new market areas. Company focus appears to be on compliance and not innovation.

Advice to Senior ManagementInvestigate parallel development of risk averse next generation products and improve product roadmaps to pursue lower cost, highly innovative products to regain competitive edge and ensure DRM focus to minimize user risks.

A once great company

Marketing (Current Employee)
Minneapolis, MN

I have been working at Medtronic full-time for more than 3 years

Pros- Great, smart coworkers
- Feel good about the value of the work you do on products that benefit patients, worldwide
- Ethical behavior is the expectation
- Certain office buildings are very nice with great amenities.
- Great sense of pride in telling people you work for Medtronic
- Salary and benefits toward the higher end of the scale
- Medtronic looks good on a resume that will help you find a great job at another company

Cons- Layoffs, layoffs, layoffs....Everyone is in angst from fiscal year to fiscal year wondering if the ax will swing for them.
- Losing too many great coworkers due to limited career development opportunities within Medtronic and constant angst about potential layoffs
- People are spread too thin over too many projects. Funds are spread too thin over too many projects.
- Employees who are closest to customers and products and have extensive knowledge are very often left out of business planning and important decision-making
- Insufficient support staff -- highly paid people wind up doing low-level tasks
- At one time there were a few nice in-house professional development opportunities and some funds to attend courses external to the company. These seem to have gone by the wayside over the years.

Advice to Senior Management- Stop the layoffs -- these are great employee! If you need to reduce headcount, eliminate VP and perhaps even director positions.
- Tap the experience and expertise of your employees who are close to the customers and products rather than focus reliance on a large barrier of VPs and directors.
- Have employees focus their jobs on what is going to provide the greatest value to patients and customers. Explore ways to help provide focus and efficiency. Eliminate activities that do not add value.
- Invest in developing employee skills and knowledge

No longer a good place to work

R&D Engineer (Former Employee)
Mounds View, MN

I worked at Medtronic as a contractor for less than a year

ProsLeader in medical device industry, profile margin is high. Lots of training to new employees. Company culture is good in general, emphasize on R&D (annual sci and tech conference), good relationship to hospitals and academia.

ConsStagnant US market force it shifts efforts to emerging markets, China, India, ... Plus the 2.3% sale tax in medical devices starting this year, large RIFs (reduction in workforce) are happened in recent years. High level executives mentioned couple times in the employee meeting that Medtronic is a public company. They seem pay attention to short-term stock values more than long-term company growth. No wonder one of the senior employee (work there for over 20 yrs) called Medtronic as a sinking boat.

Advice to Senior Managementlook into long-term direction of company, do not work only to please wall street.

Looks great on a resume, but you just can't trust 'em!

R&D Engineer (Former Employee)
Sunnyvale, CA

I worked at Medtronic full-time for more than a year

Pros- Lots of opportunity to work cross-functionally
- Annual Science and Technology conference is a lot of fun
- Competitive salary & benefits
- Cool technologies
- Easy to see direct impact of work on patient health

Cons- Sadly untrustworthy
- Was made promises about promotion and given long-term incentive, then laid off instead
- Does a poor job of integrating their acquisitions and providing them resources, then blames them when they under-perform.
- currently no performance based incentives. Everyone gets 2% regardless of how hard you work

Advice to Senior ManagementWhy is it that when sales fails to hit artificially high targets, R&D gets affected? Where's the accountability? Provide better training for the reps so they can do the job better. The management between CEO and local Sr. Dir needs a shake up. They are constantly making near-sighted business decisions.

Good company to get your career rolling, but you're just a number.

Senior Design Technician (Former Employee)
Mounds View, MN

I worked at Medtronic full-time for more than a year

ProsGood pay and benefits (even though they seem to be decreasing). The working environment decently laid back - some are overloaded and working at a frantic pace, while others are the polar opposite.

ConsToo much bureaucracy. Very heavy on management. Receiving credit for rectifying major problems or being an integral part of a "fire fighting" team more often than not leads nowhere. The company seems to be more interested in hiring engineers to do technician work than having a defined role.

Advice to Senior ManagementEveryone has their specified role - so hire for that type of work. Give people the credit they deserve and promote, promote, promote!

A company getting crazy from all perspectives

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Minneapolis, MN

I have been working at Medtronic full-time for more than 7 years

Proscompare to other companies, it provides OK benefits. It has floating holidays and stock purchase discount for 15 percent. It has flexible hours.

ConsMany people of color are very frustrated to work here. They are expected to deliver results, but they are not giving enough opportunity to be promoted.

Advice to Senior Managementdon't expect any change.
