    Pros

This company is improving people's lives on a daily basis and it is uplifting to be a part of it.
Enjoy working with like-minded people. Great benefits.

    Cons

Very easy to get pigeon holed in this large organization - not a great deal of opportunity to branch out.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please show the same consideration to your employees that you do to patients and the community at large. There are ways to meet budget numbers without large scales RIF's - too much waste

    Pros

Work environment is good. Alot of great people to work with. Corporate tenets are worthy when followed. Quality is high.

    Cons

Discipline is lacking. Limited few are allowed to advance. If you are a favorite, you are all set.
Corporate goal is purely stock holder driven. All about the bottom line.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Apply discipline when needed to make things better for those that are trying.

    Pros

I really enjoy the building environment & the people are great! The benefits are excellent!

    Cons

The challenges of working here is with Poor Leadership with false promises. Communication is slim to none. Medtronic promotes many people into leadership positions that do not have leadership experience. This company is mostly a "who you know," company. This creates challenges of working with leaders who do not listen to their employees and creates low morale. Also Personal Time Off needs more of a fix. Medtronic only allows 40 hours of PTO, and many employees prefer a different approach. Promotions are based on "who you," and sometimes seen as unfair in some departments.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your employees and give them what they want. Create career plans. Create more promotions in the work place and do not promise things to your employees if you cannot give it to them.

    Pros

Good Salary and Bonus and occasional stock grants

    Cons

Frequent Layoffs, Company has thin product pipeline of its own and tries to grow with Acquisition of venture companies, many of which fail at hefty costs. Leadership is quite entrenched and is difficult to break in.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Develop your own R&D and try to hire good engineers from good engineering schools and not IVY league MBA schools.

    Pros

Plenty of extremely smart people makes it a great place to learn and grow. Company culture emphasizes work-life balance and the trust that you will get your work done. Everyone is extremely committed to the mission and to helping improve peoples' lives.

    Cons

Medtronic has the interesting practice of training all of their interns to go off and work for St. Jude and Boston Scientific; they do not hire anyone out of college. Frequent layoffs. They do not invest in young talent at all, which seems like a bad strategy for long-term growth. They do not have any loyalty towards their employees, everyone seems expendable.

Former Contractor - Diabetes Therapy Associate in San Antonio, TX

I worked at Medtronic as a contractor (more than a year)

    Pros

Great entry-level into: sales, business, customer service and corporate culture. Good for college graduates, especially UTSA students since its located at the Rim. Workers are nice and some are really helpful. Smart, talented, and passionate people.

    Cons

Bad contracting. No benefits for contractors. Not enough growth opportunities to retain people and talent. Only Lateral moves. Office politics and favoritism. Having a larger territory is a big factor in sales performance. Most in position stay about a year. Not many stay more than 1.5 years.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Too much middle management. Some managers are good. Policies change so fast and vision is unclear for department with product changes.

    Pros

Great benefits!!! It is nice to work with a company with a good reputation with its customers.

    Cons

Difficult to advance for minorities. The company is Executive Heavy and often one does not know exactly what these people do. The company has had several layoffs. They are weak at placing qualified individuals in open positions and there is no loyalty to workers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get rid of the good ole' boy mentality.
