I have been working at Menards

    Pros

The best part about working at Menard's was meeting new people every day each with a different issue. The customers and coworkers are what made the experience enjoyable really.

    Cons

The pay can be better as well as scheduling. We would work long hour days and be expected back to open the next morning.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Only time upper management came in was to inform us of bad events happening at the store.

I have been working at Menards full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

I've worked for the company for eight years and have been taught how to adapt to a company with very strict polices and procedures. I have gained very useful knowledge on how to apply my strengths to the company to help it continue to grow and offer value to its customers.

    Cons

Very low standards as far as promoting employees to jobs they are not qualified or trained to perform.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to offer great value to customers, but do not forget to offer the same value to your employees as well.

I have been working at Menards part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    Awesome hours in the summer.
    Pays more than minimum wage.
An extra $2.50/hr on the weekends.
    Instant Profit Sharing
    Holiday bonus.

    Cons

Discount is only 10% and you can only discount up to 70% of your next paycheck. The total purchase is taken out of that paycheck.
Winter hours are terrible, can't even make a living.
If they don't need you, they will send you home.
    Managers play favorites too much.
Always an excuse for not being able to be promoted to full-time.
If your store has a propane refill station, the cashiers that are certified make the same wage as a Head Cashier.
No paid holidays for part-time employees.
Instant Profit Sharing is 40% taxed.
Holiday bonus is an in store credit and has to be claimed on your taxes.
    Health benefits are too expensive.
Corporate makes visits to stores and micromanage.
They don't properly train employees about products
Can only punch in 5 mins before shift
    Lunch is only 30 minutes
Management and supervisors don't get breaks
All technology is outdated. Even the POS program.
Constantly having to solicit the BIG card, as a cashier, or risk getting suspended, as if they don't play the commercial on the radio at the store every 10 minutes.
    Uptight managers make work uncomfortable.
They just offered a .50 raise to all employees, but corporate told each store to deny the raise to 5% of their employees.
If we're being verbally abused, a manager won't step in. They will just sit back and watch it happen.
General Managers hand out ridiculous to-do lists EVERYDAY. Where in my job description does it say I have to pull weeds?!

I have been working at Menards full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

My managers were all around my age, it was a fun place to work in that aspect. Work is fun when you can relate to your management rather than never seeing eye to eye. The actual work is not too bad either, can be tedious at times doing the same few projects over and over. Flexible with your outside work schedule.

    Cons

Hourly wage for the amount of work is outrageous. Having to take a test with the GM approval for a $0.10 raise every 3 months. You have to work outrageous hours to make money but then you are taxed more. Benefits cost you paychecks. Even pay for the higher ups, unless you put in the 50-60 hour weeks, it is not worth it. Even the extra incentives to work, such as the profit sharing is so minuscule.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Company has to start offering more to their employees to stay within the company. It is not that difficult to find a better offering but John Menard is such a penny pincher, I do not foresee that happening.
