    Huge company

    Software Engineer (Former Employee)

ProsFlexible working hours, nice co-workers and an easygoing atmosphere.

ConsReally bad self-righteous middle-management looking to make a name for themselves, lack of direction and not a lot of possibility for self-advancement i.e. challenging projects with new technologies.

Advice to Senior ManagementRead Peopleware. Seriously, read it. Software engineers are not mindless drones that you should micromanage - not because you should be nice to your employees, but rather to get the most out of them. You are investing your money by hiring them.

    Career dead end

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Wilsonville, OR

ProsFlexible working conditions, good salary, professional peers. The individual offices vs. cubicles in Wilsonville is also great...when things get noisy I can close my door and continue working.

ConsAbsolute career dead end; there is no career advancement policy, nor do any managers discuss it. It's not a part of your review.

Performance reviews are a joke. Lately managers have been saying "just put the same self evaluation as last year and change the date." Not just my manager, but many people I've talked to. Extremely de-motivating to bust your tail and get the same 3% raise as the slacker next door.

Advice to Senior ManagementWhen you did the employee survey several years ago, the number one issue was absence of career planning. NOTHING has been done to change that. Unfortunate as this would drive Mentor to the next level of success.

    Finance

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsGood benefits, flexible work hours and great people

ConsTop tier management team has been with the company for 20+years. Very conservative and changes are slow. There is very limited career opportunities and employee training.

Advice to Senior ManagementManagement team need ps to reach out to other companies in the industry to be In tune with the changing environment. Take a little more risk to take this great company to the next level. Focus on employee training and career planning to provide more opportunities for the employees.

A good job, not a career

Technical Marketing Engineer (Current Employee) Wilsonville, OR

ProsGood salary, good benefits (but with cuts every year), nice campus (at least HQ in Wilsonville), real offices (at HQ)

ConsNo growth or training opportunities whatsoever. Most people stay in their jobs "forever" and the only growth is through acquisition, so don't expect to climb the ladder. This creates an atmosphere where even the sharpest and brightest employee eventually becomes demotivated and useless. The most clueless HR organization I have ever experienced. Most engineering positions are slowly being transferred from the US and EU to offices in Pakistan, Egypt, Armenia, etc., which means that development teams are changing from being tight-nit to distributed. Virtually no new technology development (only through acquisitions). Be aware that the product groups are VERY independent. There is no such thing as a "Mentor culture". What's true in one group may not be the case in another, so if you plan on joining, make sure you get input from someone in that particular group.

Advice to Senior ManagementGive employees an opportunity to stay sharp, develop new skills, and address new challenges. Be honest about long term off-shoring plans.

    Great work places

Software Development Engineer (Current Employee) Wilsonville, OR

    ProsWork/life balance is great
    Culture/values
    Cares about employees
Nice headquarters with Gym, fields, green areas and lots of activities

ConsCareer path, not well defined, you hit a plateau after a while
Benefits and compensation packages need to be reworked, and benefits tend to decrease with time

Advice to Senior ManagementFocus more on creating career path opportunities

It all depends on your division

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsMentor Graphics is a stable company that has weathered some storms and come out just fine. The environment is generally professional but not particularly innovative.

ConsYour experience at Mentor Graphics is very dependent on the division you are a part of. Each division is highly independent. From a candidate perspective it might as well be its own company. Base your decision on feedback from others in the the division you are considering.

    Mentor Graphics reviews

Software Engineer (Former Employee) Fremont, CA

ProsGood health care and used to have good stock option. The stock option before locked the lowest price for 2 years.

ConsA lot of management politics. A VP was laid off because of making a decision that is good for the company but bad for the CEO. CEO is also too conservative about being merged or acquired thus impede the company's growth and employee's benefits.

Advice to Senior ManagementDo some good planning instead of playing politics.

Overall very good, but stay out of SDD

Product Marketing Manager (Former Employee) Longmont, CO

ProsThe company as a whole provides very competitive salaries & benefits package, probably one of the best in the industry.

ConsThe Systems Design Division (SDD) based in Longmont, CO is a very toxic & unhealthy environment in which to work. The GM is very narcissistic & runs the division with a very military style iron fist (Vietnam vet). Consequently his direct reports (Product Line Directors) are becoming clones of him & really have next to zero personal management skills. If you don't just bend over & agree with the GM (Henry Potts) then you'll be history. No one is big enough to challenge him.
It's a very politically orientated work place, where PLD's are continually pitched against other. One day you are on the golden list, next day on the hit list.

Advice to Senior ManagementGet some personal management skills. The people are the most valuable asset to this company/division.
