I worked at Merck as an intern

    Pros

The people in my department (CPDC) made the whole experience worth it. Work-life balance is excellent. Lots of passionate engineers. So many exit/growth opportunities.

    Cons

Not diverse at all in terms of culture and gender, <10% female for example. But they are working hard to identify talent to make that up.

    Advice to Management

Ask interns for feedback at the end!

    Pros

Pay is good, benefits good. Working environment and co-workers are stellar people,at least in my dept.

    Cons

now downsizing and layoffs are happening at every site, Pharma co. run by a lawyer is not the best formula to lead a pharma co. into the future.

    Advice to Management

streamline your process, cut the red tape. Stop with the titles of director, asst. director, VP of every facet of business. It would almost appear to an outsider that there are no workers within the company, only execs!

I have been working at Merck full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

2 work from home days per week allows for a great work life balance. Flexible schedule option open to all.

    Cons

Too much change too often makes employees feel less valued and unsure of future with the company. Overall a great place to work.

I worked at Merck full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Relatively stable if you simply deliver on what you say you are going to do, when you say you are going to do it.

    Cons

Tough to climb the ladder if you are ESL and have difficulties communicating or answering any questions in a public forum. This isn't really management or company fault, just a harsh reality that isn't very well "hidden."

    Advice to Management

Constantly re-prioritizing therapeutic areas makes things more difficult than necessary

I worked at Merck (More than a year)

    Pros

Large company with good benefits and salary.

    Cons

Large layoffs over the last several years due to moving many jobs transitioning overseas to Prague

    Advice to Management

In the long run would be cheaper to keep jobs in USA.

I have been working at Merck as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

Prestigious company, lots of movement available, very flat, most people listen very well and follow up well, lots of cross training and continuing ed available.

    Cons

Training took over three months which could have been one month and two weeks. Very slow. Contractors do not receive any benefits or able to participate in many company functions, excluded.

    Advice to Management

Promote the best candidate, not your favorites.

I worked at Merck (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good pay and a professional company. Environment was friendly but work oriented. Bonus and benefits were great. A lot of opportunity within the company for growth.

    Cons

The company has peaked several years ago and has been cutting cost for years now. It's not an easy place to get into.

    Advice to Management

    Need more new products
