I have been working at Michaels Stores full-time

    Pros

Good people working HARD under tight conditions.

    Cons

Most common complaint and only increasing: I couldn't find anyone to help me. That's because payroll has been cut so tight there is typically only one person on the floor and over half their time is spent running backup on a register.

    Advice to Management

Stop spending dollars to save pennies. The cutting has gotten so ludicrous it looks like we don't care about helping the customer. Every year I've been with the company the payroll screws have been tightened and the customers are the ones that are suffering the most for it.

    Pros

Great coworkers and the 30% discount on most craft supplies is great. Flexible hours for students.

    Cons

Terrible management, does not follow corporate policies, hard time getting hours if you don't work nights and weekends. Minimum wage and a lot is expected of you.

    Advice to Management

Stop promoting employees who did not deserve or earn the promotion. Should follow company policy and review all internal applicants for the position. Stop rejecting availability requests.

    I worked at Michaels Stores

    Pros

The employee discount was nice, since my mom is a craft person, so I could buy her stuff without breaking my bank. I started as a part time seasonal cashier. After working hard(never once called off, filled in for everyone) my manager asked me to stay as just a part time. The Michaels where I worked, had 2 amazing managers. The store manager, and then another manager(can't remember her exact title) they were like my moms away from home. This was my first job ever, and at first, my experience was amazing. There were times of a lot of customers coming in, and busy check outs(loved those) and then there could be half an hour, to an hour of really nothing. Coworkers and I would have "races" to see who could answer the phone first, and who could assist the most customers(made it fun).

    Cons

If it wasn't for the assistant manager, I would still be working at Michaels. I was one of the hardest working employees there(not boosting myself, others told me, and I never called off, treated everyone with respect, etc...) and the assistant manager, had no respect for anyone who worked "below" him. Often times pulling up to work, my stomach would knot up, and I'd feel sick, because I hated working around him. Several times I was sent home crying, and later I found out, several other girls did too. I wasn't into talking about other employees, or the customers, so that made me an "outcast" with him and another associate. I didn't receive any training, besides the basics on how to operate the cash register. I felt like I was used. Now I know I got paid, obviously. But I felt like the hard work I put in, wasn't appreciated. I saw other employees, who would call off every week, come in late, fight with customers, and nothing was done about them. I would understand the assistant manager being rude to me, if I was a bad employee, but when I was there, I gave it my all.

    Advice to Management

They need to check in with the managers. Find out customers opinions, and other employees opinions, of the managers.

    Pros

The only pro is the discount and having one good manager to work with,

    Cons

Working a five and a half hour day on a truck day and expected to get it all done is unrealistic goals. Then when you want to stay longer and help your told there is no hours but then days later get yelled at for not staying and not caring. If you go over on hours your punished with less hours the next week. Stressful due to lots of different positions to do and pay sucks.

    Pros

    I don't have any pros.

    Cons

This was my first starter job, I was a cashier and did some stock. Too focused on hiring more people than actually giving decent hours at a minimum wage job.

    Advice to Management

Management's policies were not consistant and were too focused on getting a new customer base that forming relationships with current customers became an issue.

    Pros

The people within the store are awesome. Finally a great discount

    Cons

District manager puts on a front and tells you what you wanna hear just to keep you around cuz they know you're a hard worker but in all reality has no intention of promoting you. I've done almost every position including ops manager. I was ops mgr aka hourly assistant for 6 years and got NO yearly bonus or a decent pay rate for busting my booty every single day. This company isn't fair to their employees not sure why store managers and assistants get bonuses while the rest of the management get nothing big a verbal thanks for your hard work, and even then that depends on who you're working for cuz you might not even get that. Payroll is a joke and s half. They shove customer service down our throats yet hmmmm no employees around to help those customers. Planograms are a joke cuz they give you a certain amount of time to do them but when a department is getting completely moved the heck around they don't take into account that time. Company dumps on associates yet doesn't reward them for their hard work. Giving actual yearly raises would be awesome but instead each store manager is given a certain $ amount to divide up between the staff. That's pure crap. Treat your employees with respect and you wouldn't have such a huge turn around time frame.

    Advice to Management

Support those that wanna move up don't hire outside the company without even trying to look within.

    Cons
