I have been working at Michaels Stores part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Work environment friendly. Helpful co workers. I love working at the job. Very creative and meet great people.

    Cons

No training. first week on job left alone to sell with little knowledge of department and computer program. No hours available to train.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Train your employee. less stress on everyone including managers. They just might stay around longer. Give them more time to learn. Better for customers and Michaels.More full time positions would help.

    Pros

Good first job teaches you the basics of good customer service.

    Cons

My training was on a busy day where I was forced to learn fast. Very frustrating on the first day of a sale's associate

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

My advice to management is that a team means every single member in the store working therefore the manager should never just sit around but to also help the team members.

I have been working at Michaels Stores part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

The discount is rather good, since it applies to both full retail and sales items, but that's about it.

    Cons

Depending on your boss, there is no regard for personal life, no regard for personal safety, and the work demanded of you is not worth the money and hours they very carefully measure and manage.

In my case, I was lied to about the requirements of my job, have been continually blamed for the mistakes of others, especially those who have not been properly trained, and have been threatened to be fired because of my disability, despite doing everything I can to do the job to the best of my ability.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your team, because they are the ones holding you up. Treating people like objects will only cost the company more money because of time spent training new people and paying unemployment.

I have been working at Michaels Stores part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

    - A lot of my co-workers are nice, and we can often make the shift go by faster when we're talking and having some good fun.
    - This discount isn't too bad, but I don't take advantage of it often.

    Cons

    - Terrible communication, especially between managers! There have been multiple instances where one manager will tell me to do something this way, then another comes along and tells me something different. It's hard getting them to listen to you, and even when they do listen, having them take you serious is another issue.
    - Some of the managers abuse their position; my current replenishment manager verbally abuses her team, and seems to take smoke breaks every ten minutes. Ever since they changed the policy for unloading the truck, where managers aren't supposed to be out on the floor helping to put the merchandise away, it's gotten worse.
    - Speaking of the truck policy, the whole new system they've gotten is ridiculous. We now have time-limits for the truck, and I don't know how they work the calculator, but it seems that the larger the truck, the less time we have? Add to that a truck captain who keeps threatening to write all of us up if we don't all finish on time, and abysmal working conditions (we don't get breaks save for one right after the truck is done being unloaded, and since we have such a short time-frame, most of us don't take the break because we have to get started immediately; also, this past summer, the company seemed to forget what an air conditioner was and there was one time I got so hot, I literally got ill), and doing the truck is a nightmare for this company. The fact they want you there at 3 in the morning doesn't help, either.
    - Pay is awful, and raises are so few that it never feels like much of a boost. They also do 'evaluations' that determine your raise, which I feel is a terrible way to handle it? You want me in there slaving away, and you only give me .05 as raise?
    - Also, thanks to the new Healthcare laws, Michaels has dropped their part-time benefits. And since it's nearly impossible to be made full-time, there's nothing to do about it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If any managers are reading this, please consider the cons I've listed above. I know it may sound like whining, and I know you're only here to make money, but you're driving employees away by not treating them fairly. I used to like working at Michaels, but now? Well, if I wasn't in-school and needing a steady paycheck, I would definitely be saying my good-byes to the company. I don't feel like the part-time employee's are valued, and we're seen only as manual labor. Also, you really need to train your store managers on proper communication skills.
