I have been working at Michaels Stores part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

As was said before, you can get hired easy during the season, and promoted quick. Discount is nice if you are crafty and now includes sales items. Mostly friendly co-workers and some are extremely fun, talented and hard working. Overall I enjoy my job and being surrounded by creativity and inspiration, but would like some revamping of policies and procedures

    Cons

Mostly part time, over-hiring is terrible and limits hours and the turnover is outragous. Co-workers an managers like to start drama(I've known crafty people to be like this =P) 3 words-"Crazy craft ladies" if you've worked here you know what I mean. There are really nice creative customers who come in, but then there are the ones who are rude, snotty and look down on you for taking care of there precious supplies. Employees are not well trained before being 'set loose', and some just simply do not try and are not reprimanded for it. Pay is mediocre and yearly raises are insulting for the work expected.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Spend more time teaching employees basic rules/ proceedures.

Some drawbacks, but the moments it is personally rewarding almost make up for the cons.

I have been working at Michaels Stores part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Jolting personal motivation and cranking up inspiration, working at Michaels has allowed me to jump-start personal goals that I had long ignored/postponed. Being a place where most of the costumers go to equip themselves to bring a creative idea to execution, it is hard not to feel a sense of fulfillment in playing a small part of their excitement for the process.

    Cons

The hectic fast-paced aspect of the job was to be expected, seeing as the store covers seasonal merchandise, large impulse-buy (almost clearance type) sections, and sensational coupons/weekly deals. These 3 things, I find, are what produces the most work/stress in terms of meeting expectations of organization and cleanliness (can I say glitter everywhere?). There's no team meetings, which I feel would be extremely helpful, seeing as expectations vary from manager to manager on the scale of realistic to optimistic to unrealistic/absurd.
Unfortunately, the training provided can hardly be considered adequate or sufficient. As mentioned on some of the other reviews, new employees are basically "let-loose" quite unprepared. I can see how managers believe that time on the sales floor and on cashier operations -learning by doing- might be best. But after only 1hr at register and 1hr on sales floor observing more experienced employees, there is no way to retain all the information needed to perform appropriately after that one-go in each area.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Review and adjust method of training new employees.
Team meetings would also improve communication on expectations and goals.

I have been working at Michaels Stores part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Everyone pretty much got along and it's a fun place to work if you love getting crafty!

    Cons

The pay is low, but that's just minimum wage.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The management is pretty good. The only thing i would suggest is to back up your employees. If you tell us to do or not to do something and we follow your instructions, don't go behind our back and do the opposite. It makes us look imcompetent.

I have been working at Michaels Stores full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Flexible schedules. Great opportunity for growth if you work hard. You are working with, "glitter and eyes." Fun atmosphere and great people to work with.

    Cons

Specialty products, specialty businesses ( Floral, Framing, Classes) a lot of information to learn. Even after working with this company for over 2 years I still don't know about all of the products.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

New full time employees have to wait a year before getting any sort of sick time or vacation time. It would be nice if they could start earning PTO immediately or after 90 days.

I have been working at Michaels Stores part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

    - flexible for school hours
    - great co-workers
    - Get to really connect with customers

    Cons

    - Low pay! Have been working here for around 2 years and I'm still making minimum wage!
    - Time off sucks! You MUST work thanksgiving and black Friday as well as christmas eve! My significant other is in the military and when he only gets holiday leave for a few days like thanksgiving and christmas i have to spend my time working at Michaels and miss seeing him!
    - too many employees = not enough hours!
    - Management is rude! Especially when the holiday season comes around! They could care less if you are going out of town or have some important family matter you're working while they get the time off cause they're management.
    - Pressure to get everyones email (almost got fired because i didn't get any emails one day)
    - Never praised for any job well done
    - No opportunity to move up

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

re-evaluate how you run this business. stop treating employees like we are stupid or don't deserve anything and give us some praise when we do something worth praising!

I have been working at Michaels Stores part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

You make good friends with the people you work with.

    Cons

The pay sucks for working very early morning shifts, hours you put in and the amount of work you do. Working those hours throw off your normal sleep schedule and is not good for you. Its not worth the pay. Management is back and forth. Turn over rate is high for managers. Can be stingy with the hours. The company as a whole should take a step back and change the way they do things and expect the way they want things done. This is by far the worst retail store i have worked for.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try actually communicating to one another. and sticking up for your employees.

I have been working at Michaels Stores part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

pros.....umm I get to interact with customers daily, which i love. I really like interacting with the customers. Most know me after a year. I am getting to know the store and the layout after a year. I would have if I was left off the register sooner

    Cons

. I am now kinda on replenishing after a almost a year later. They still won't let me lose off it it, the register. But , since, I am am very good at it. Hence thats why I am always stuck there, the register. Let me tell you people really get PISSED off giving those out !!!!! Gotta get those blasted E-mails...
Poor management, bad hour scheduling . No consideration to employees personal time off.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Managers need to get classes to deal properly with fellow employees.IF they had management skills to deal with "fellow workers" , that would help immensely . They have zero concept in that area at all. Yes, we have great managers but they lack leadership skills. I was degraded in front of my piers Injusted !! I was discussing a shift schedule and was "directed" to get back to work !
I am in NO way a slacker but felt like it. I think Michaels should have managers training. They have it at state institutions. No one should be embarrassed at work in no means at all. Take the person aside and address it NOT in front of customers or fellow employees.... shows NO CLASS!

    Pros

Cool staff, closing not terrible, and classes are free for employees

    Cons

LOW PAY, a lot work cleaning up and assisting customers, doesn't help learn the store set up, isles constantly changing, no hours

I'm a cashier, but I have not touch the register yet...

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Shifts and duties should be fair for each employee
