I have been working at Michaels Stores part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

The medical, dental, and vision benefits are fantastic if you qualify for them, the schedule is relatively flexible.

    Cons

Almost impossible to move up in certain stores, some store managers are incredibly lazy and take advantage of their more high-spirited employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Watch your store managers more closely and make sure they are keeping a paper trail of their vacation and time-off requests. Make sure all store managers are following full SOP and not half doing it until corporate comes in for safety, quarterly and homecoming audits.

Some drawbacks, but the moments it is personally rewarding almost make up for the cons.

I have been working at Michaels Stores part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Jolting personal motivation and cranking up inspiration, working at Michaels has allowed me to jump-start personal goals that I had long ignored/postponed. Being a place where most of the costumers go to equip themselves to bring a creative idea to execution, it is hard not to feel a sense of fulfillment in playing a small part of their excitement for the process.

    Cons

The hectic fast-paced aspect of the job was to be expected, seeing as the store covers seasonal merchandise, large impulse-buy (almost clearance type) sections, and sensational coupons/weekly deals. These 3 things, I find, are what produces the most work/stress in terms of meeting expectations of organization and cleanliness (can I say glitter everywhere?). There's no team meetings, which I feel would be extremely helpful, seeing as expectations vary from manager to manager on the scale of realistic to optimistic to unrealistic/absurd.
Unfortunately, the training provided can hardly be considered adequate or sufficient. As mentioned on some of the other reviews, new employees are basically "let-loose" quite unprepared. I can see how managers believe that time on the sales floor and on cashier operations -learning by doing- might be best. But after only 1hr at register and 1hr on sales floor observing more experienced employees, there is no way to retain all the information needed to perform appropriately after that one-go in each area.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Review and adjust method of training new employees.
Team meetings would also improve communication on expectations and goals.

I have been working at Michaels Stores part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

The managers are understanding. The discount is great and I've learned a lot!

    Cons

There are often changes in policies or procedures and only a few people are told about the change. Each manager tells you a different thing and it can be really confusing. The coupon policy is a little strict and costumers get really upset about that.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Maybe hold meetings monthly so each employee is aware of any changes that may have occurred with polices.

I have been working at Michaels Stores part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

-Occasionally getting paid for crafting (e.g. creating samples or leading children's activities)
    -Decent employee discount
    -Generally fun atmosphere among coworkers
    -Flexible hours
-Discussing projects and crafts with customers

    Cons

-Pressure for email collection. My store has many repeat customers, making it difficult to meet the percentage, which requires NEW emails. Also, many elderly customers without any email address.
-Lack of hours overall and highly variable shifts from week to week. Customers often complain about no one on the floor to help them.
-Strict coupon policy which directs customer frustration and anger towards employees, cashiers in particular.
-Little chance of a full-time position. They are few and far between.
-Pressure from corporate which, I feel, often translates into management frustration that is sometimes directed at other employees.

I have been working at Michaels Stores part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

The 30% employee discount and some of my co-workers are the only good thing about working at Michaels.

    Cons

Open thanksgiving day, and can not even request it off. I have been working there 2 years and have had 2 pay raises. Recently there was an increase to minimum wage and now the new hires are making more than I do. The store I work at is micromanaged. The first peak season I worked here, we sometimes worked 11 hour days with no breaks or lunch. We were only scheduled for 5 1/2 hours and we're told we could not leave until we were finished with truck. Managers do not communicate well with each other leading to more work for the associates.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stay closed on thanksgiving. Most store sales does not meet the overhead cost for being open on that day. Now that we are live online we can have thanksgiving day sales online only. Treat your associates better and you will have a lower turnover rate, and happier employees lead to better customer service. Have all managers attend leadership and communication seminars.

Michael's isn't well organized or efficient, so good management really matters.

I have been working at Michaels Stores part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

You have the potential to work a lot of different jobs around the store which is good for experience on your resume. The pay is slightly over Florida minimum wage. Part-time is close to 15 hours a week, sometimes more sometimes less depending on the season.

    Cons

The company doesn't give enough hours to management, so on weekdays there are only four people in the store most of time. One sales associate, one manager, one framer, and one cashier. It feels like you're in a sinking ship every time you clock in. It's very stressful and expectations are way too high especially because training is about 15 minutes if that and then it's your job to figure out the rest. The company doesn't give management very much money to give in terms of raises, so you're most likely going to get screwed over badly no matter how hard you work and how long you work there. You can get in a lot of trouble for not getting enough emails from customers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treating your employees with respect and making sure they are taken care of will make the store a much better place. When employees are happy, it will show and then customers will see that. If the store has a specific coupon policy, make sure it is clearly visible to where a cashier can point to it if the customers don't believe them. If email collections are so important, don't make coupons available online or don't make email collection mandatory at all. Better yet make sure the cashier/sales associate is asking for the customer's email every time, but if the customer says "no" then don't take it out on the employee. Give the store carts just for people working freight, they end up taking the carts that the customers use and then customers walk around with everything in their arms. Make sure even on weekdays that there are enough employees in the store, if someone can take care of go backs while the other person recovers the store/ is back up cashier, then task can be complete without everyone running around and not having time for customer interaction.

    Pros

Everyone pretty much got along and it's a fun place to work if you love getting crafty!

    Cons

The pay is low, but that's just minimum wage.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The management is pretty good. The only thing i would suggest is to back up your employees. If you tell us to do or not to do something and we follow your instructions, don't go behind our back and do the opposite. It makes us look imcompetent.
