    Pros

They have a Michael's Cares Program, which means they are raising money to help employees with financial needs.

They have an associate's discount program (Blackstone Marketplace) in which you can virtually buy anything with a discount.

They also donate a lot of their stuff.

    Cons

Be prepared to get dirty fingernails!

    Advice to Management

    You're doing great

Michael's is an okay company but they don't value their employees like they should. Some stores are very dirty and old.

    Pros

You get 30% off craft items. Also, the work is not hard if you know what you're doing.

    Cons

Almost no training in any process, you're just kind of thrown in and have to figure it out. Managers are moved around so often in the company that store policies are very inconsistent. As far as management opportunities, in my experience, it has no rhyme or reason, it's just who the hiring person likes best. I've been at Michael's 3.5 years and seen some really deserving people get passed over, which is sad. If you are part time, do not expect more than 15 hours a week. It happens rarely. And forget full time - it's only for the managers. You can work at Michael's for fifteen years and not get full time, even if you're excellent. I've seen it happen. Also, SOPs in this company don't matter - you're store manager does what he/she thinks is best and arguing will get you into trouble.

    Advice to Management

There is no need to be derogatory. If you ask nicely and train adequately, then your employees will generally work hard for you. Listen to what they say - sometimes they have better ideas than you do. Also, be fair. Give your crew consistent hours and stop playing favorites - it discourages the entire team.

    Pros

Its a fun place as I am very creative and love to show my creativity. People are nice at least some of them.

    Cons

Too much work for very minimum pay. Working hours are very less. Most week have to work only 3 hours a day and it seems useless because I spend more driving to and from work then what I make in a day.

    Advice to Management

Support Specialist should have fixed working hours and with the amount of work, we should have at least 4 1/2 to 5 hours of fixed work a day.

    Pros

This is definitely a unique job. All the customers I've had the pleasure of coming to know, and all the projects and ideas I've gotten from working here are phenomenal. The employee discount is quite gracious and the friendships I've made with fellow associates have meant a lot to me.

    Cons

The hours are ever changing. Going from 6 hour shifts, five days a week, to 3 hour shifts 6 days a week. They understaff, and then pile responsibilities on the employees they do have and expect everything to get done without these short shifts.

    Advice to Management

I've experienced two store managers since I've been with the company. I loved my job with the first manager, but my second manager was a nightmare. She would talk dirty about employees to management from other stores. She did not greet customers or try and keep the store clean but would expect us to do so. She made multiple rude comments, called employees inappropriate names and made multiple religious comments towards me that were very unappreciated. Within three weeks of this new management, five long term employees left the company. My advice to management is to treat your employees with respect. Lead by example and be professional.

    Pros

Fun environment. Discount and get to meet and work with crafty people.

    Cons

Not really team players. It seems like more important that every tool you need is in correct labeled spot and nothing else. Which means to throw out stuff very wasteful. Some managers are to clicky and immature. If you are not full time (very very few are) then you don't matter.

    Advice to Management

Get out of the office instead of gossiping about all us part timers. You should also check out other stores to see what is going on

    Pros

It is nice to be around people who make things.

    Cons

No one is paid as much as he or she deserves. Hours are unpredictable and shift schedules are published on Wednesday for the following Sunday. Workers are penalized when customers decline to reveal e-mail addresses. Corporate's insistence on constantly changing product location only irritates the customers. Far too much energy is spent on silly contests.

    Advice to Management

Improve wages and scheduling timelines. Give stores the equipment they need to function. Poor cleaning equipment makes for dirty stores. Shoddy technology makes for efficiency lapses.

    Pros

There is flexibility in scheduling. They ask me what hours I prefer. Getting time off is easy. My co-workers are mostly very friendly, pleasant people.

    Cons

Largely ignored by my managers. Given very little guidance/training. I've had to ask a lot of questions in order to understand what is expected of me.

    Advice to Management

Simply be more precise about your expectations when assigning tasks to new employees. How many hours the task should take to complete, which things are highest priority, which things are less important and don't require so much attention, etc.
