I have been working at Michaels Stores (less than a year)

    Pros

    Great employee discount
    Friendly employees
Will work with you when you need time off

    Cons

    Confusing management
    Messy store/doesn't get cleaned well
People on freight mislocate new inventory often causing issues with customers
Lack of training for new employees

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Put more people on closing shift every night, three-four people are not enough! Especially during busy seasonal sales, there is just not enough time to get the store organized otherwise. Also make the new employees do returns or recover more often so that they can properly learn the locations of items in the store.

I have been working at Michaels Stores full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Good location and mostly friendly people. I can relate to the customer. Bonus program for corporate managers can deliver strong $ when company performs well.

    Cons

Poor IT department - very little knowledge retention, everything requires a ticket to be submitted and its sheer luck if it gets assigned to the right area, departments have no clear contacts or relationships with IT team.
Overly reactive to day-to-day sales results.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Figure out how to execute to solve the known problems in store and at the support center. We know where our weaknesses are but we have trouble actually making progress on improving these issues.

I have been working at Michaels Stores part-time (less than a year)

    Pros

The discount is rather good, since it applies to both full retail and sales items, but that's about it.

    Cons

Depending on your boss, there is no regard for personal life, no regard for personal safety, and the work demanded of you is not worth the money and hours they very carefully measure and manage.

In my case, I was lied to about the requirements of my job, have been continually blamed for the mistakes of others, especially those who have not been properly trained, and have been threatened to be fired because of my disability, despite doing everything I can to do the job to the best of my ability.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your team, because they are the ones holding you up. Treating people like objects will only cost the company more money because of time spent training new people and paying unemployment.

I have been working at Michaels Stores part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

    - A lot of my co-workers are nice, and we can often make the shift go by faster when we're talking and having some good fun.
    - This discount isn't too bad, but I don't take advantage of it often.

    Cons

    - Terrible communication, especially between managers! There have been multiple instances where one manager will tell me to do something this way, then another comes along and tells me something different. It's hard getting them to listen to you, and even when they do listen, having them take you serious is another issue.
    - Some of the managers abuse their position; my current replenishment manager verbally abuses her team, and seems to take smoke breaks every ten minutes. Ever since they changed the policy for unloading the truck, where managers aren't supposed to be out on the floor helping to put the merchandise away, it's gotten worse.
    - Speaking of the truck policy, the whole new system they've gotten is ridiculous. We now have time-limits for the truck, and I don't know how they work the calculator, but it seems that the larger the truck, the less time we have? Add to that a truck captain who keeps threatening to write all of us up if we don't all finish on time, and abysmal working conditions (we don't get breaks save for one right after the truck is done being unloaded, and since we have such a short time-frame, most of us don't take the break because we have to get started immediately; also, this past summer, the company seemed to forget what an air conditioner was and there was one time I got so hot, I literally got ill), and doing the truck is a nightmare for this company. The fact they want you there at 3 in the morning doesn't help, either.
    - Pay is awful, and raises are so few that it never feels like much of a boost. They also do 'evaluations' that determine your raise, which I feel is a terrible way to handle it? You want me in there slaving away, and you only give me .05 as raise?
    - Also, thanks to the new Healthcare laws, Michaels has dropped their part-time benefits. And since it's nearly impossible to be made full-time, there's nothing to do about it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If any managers are reading this, please consider the cons I've listed above. I know it may sound like whining, and I know you're only here to make money, but you're driving employees away by not treating them fairly. I used to like working at Michaels, but now? Well, if I wasn't in-school and needing a steady paycheck, I would definitely be saying my good-byes to the company. I don't feel like the part-time employee's are valued, and we're seen only as manual labor. Also, you really need to train your store managers on proper communication skills.

I have been working at Michaels Stores full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Getting to work with products i love
    Working with happy people
Have a good day here and there

    Cons

I don't know where to start.
The corporate expectations are insane, nothing is ever to their standards. I was literally told by a corporate visitor that Michaels is a negative reinforcement company. The literal message to store management is do what I say and shut your mouth. Its their literal cycle of leadership. Also we make mistakes, its up to you to pick up the pieces. We work with all that we have, putting in our blood, sweat, and tears only to get told its not enough. In our stores our customers are always right, to a point where our customers can verbally abuse and threaten us and they are sent a gift card. We are not given the information we desperately need to make them happy on our own, we are just left in the dark. Most of our coupons don't work properly. We are not able to fire poisonous employees and after writing this I don't know what I'm doing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I love my management, I even realize its not the district manager, the problem is higher then that. I honestly dont know how we can keep a smile on our faces knowing things are going to only get worse from here. im tired of keeping quiet like that piece of paper said that i have to.
