I worked at MicroStrategy full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

MSTR was a great place to work if you like building new things, experimenting with technology, and working near a busy area like Tyson's Corner. From my experience, the supervisors are great and the people are nice.

    Cons

Lots of college recruits means time is wasted on learning the ropes. The executive team is at the mercy of the shareholders, so massive layoffs and budget cuts are inevitable. The core product is a mess and difficult to work with, and the support/education is focused on older products that are outdated and irrelevant. It seems like all the departments operate at different speeds, causing bottlenecks and wasted efforts. Marketing is not on the same page. We lost major clients because smaller, more effective companies are offering smarter products. In several instances, HR said positive things to employees about their future at MSTR, then weeks later the employees were let go.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get your departments on the same page. Focus on making the best products better. Either run the company full-time like a proper CEO or let someone more precise take over. Outsource marketing efforts for better results. Don't grow so fast that you need massive layoffs to balance the budget.

    Pros

    Innovation and technology focus

    Cons

Management and ability to work through conflict successfully

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It is not always best to promote from within. People who work in the role you are promoting from are not trained to be good leaders, only good individual contributors . Making the leap to leader in management is often not something these folks (especially in presales) are equipped to do successfully.

I worked at MicroStrategy full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    - Work from home if you aren't near an office
    - Good comp plan for AEs
    - Lots of tenured people (although many have left)
    - If you don't like a policy, everything changes in 6 months here anyway

    Cons

    - We've strayed from our core competency (analytics) and wasted lots of time and resources on Saylor's pet projects. This has resulted in a seriously delayed release of MSTR 10 that's affected our ability to be more competitive in an already saturated space. Technology is 2-3 years behind where the market should be
    - Leadership changes at C-level are frequent and multiple rounds of layoffs have truly affected morale throughout the entire company
    - Serious cutbacks included marketing, not paying for field sales expenses (phones, Internet)
    - No incoming leads and no marketing budget (prospecting is truly DIY here)
    - Not many AEs make their number. Sometimes having good install (enterprise accounts) can mitigate this issue

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop focusing on Usher and release MSTR 10 already! Instead of playing catch up to Tableau and other vendors, focus on transforming the BI market and come out with something truly revolutionary

I have been working at MicroStrategy

    Pros

All of the "regular" employees are wonderful. There is a gym with free classes available for any employee. Free parking right next to the mall and access to the metro.

    Cons

Upper management is terrible. There is a lack of communication between the executives on 14 and everyone else on the floors below.

    Pros

Some talented young professionals that will have a bright future...somewhere else

    Cons

CEO in wrong role. He understands technology but lacks severely in understanding sales, people management and business in general

Hard to use software that is outdated now because of a lack of focus on core competency

Low compensation for lower level employees when compared to other software companies in the area. Used to be worth it to work here because of the good people, technology and name brand but not anymore

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Mr. Saylor, I have nothing but respect for what you have accomplished over the last 20 years. However, everyone (even the CEO) has a specific role in the business and needs to operate within their boundaries. Your job is to lead the overall strategy. You hire others to execute so give others freedom to do this. The company is not in a bad place because people were not executing properly. It is in a bad place because you chose to gamble the company's money on some ideas that didn't pan out because they were not aligned well with the main BI offering. Next time, form new entities with these products instead of taking money from the core business. This was the cause for needing to cut costs and was what hurt Microstrategy's employees and stockholders

    Pros

The people at MicroStrategy are great! There are many smart, dedicated people that make working there enjoyable. This is a fun place to work because of the people. There is collaboration among peer groups, but management gets in the way.

    Cons

The management is the problem with this company. They operate in silos and do their best to keep it this way. It is much easier to stick to the status quo and point fingers. Hopefully the re-org gets rid of the bad apples.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Trust your employees AND LISTEN TO THEM!

I have been working at MicroStrategy (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The people here are great. Over the years, MicroStrategy has done a great job recruiting excellent talent. I would say the reason most people stay here is working with alongside some fantastic colleagues as well as the nice facilities.

    Cons

Management has definitely lost their edge. We have an executive staff that makes decisions in a vacuum. I would compare the flow of information to that of the CIA. The communication is terrible. On top of that, listening skills are even worse. One would think that an executive team would spend more time understand the needs and pains of their employees in order to help improve the company as a whole. This has been painfully overlooked and we are definitely suffering as a result.

Work-life balance is decent depending on which department you are in and the same goes for career growth. The toughest issue is knowing that you can spend long hours on a project only to have to go backwards and start over when management decides they want to do something different. You start to question what you are actually accomplishing and what difference it actually makes.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The people at Microstategy are your greatest asset. LISTEN to them. Try to create policies that encourage and foster a positive working environment where people are happy to come in and work hard for you. PLEASE! This company has great potential for increased growth in the coming years if it can get it's act together. Otherwise you should just sell the company and let a more competent team come in and do the job for you.
