I have been working at Micron Technology full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

    Open communication across departments.
    No dearth of challenges.
    Great access to outdoors.
    Enough vacation time.

    Cons

Promotions are slow and a little too rigid.
Salary is competitive, incentives are not. Some departments benefit by meeting easy goals while others have impossible goals.
    Poor educational benefits.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need more structured metrics-based approach across the board.
Need to figure out where are core strengths are and focus on them.
Better business decisions needed on what products to concentrate on.

I have been working at Micron Technology full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

It has a different type of management style in the IT department that I like. The pay and incentives are competitive for the valley. The IT "Talent Mgmt" tries it's best to have a work-life balance, training and personal growth. Very health conscience. Great stock options and bonuses in good years. There are people here that have been here forever, so see that as a good sign. Very process oriented.

    Cons

They will take whatever you give so it's up to you if you do not have a work-life balance. Cyclical product so that could effect bonus/stock or potential layoffs. Sometimes the other departments start projects without knowing/thinking about the IT side is needed and then IT is expected to jump and meet their deadlines no matter what it takes.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

sorry, but i'm not one to give advice if i haven't been in their shoes... Maybe recognize the fact that people do try their best and if you hear a name of someone doing good, recognize it.. quick email to say thanks, take a walk through some of the buildings/bull pens... say hi.. all levels of mgmt...

I have been working at Micron Technology as an intern for less than a year

    Pros

-Pay is very competitive for interns
    -Excellent facilities and welcoming employees
-Allow you to be proactive and treat you as if you're going to stay
-Upper management takes time to meet interns

    Cons

-Depending on department, interns will/will not have a great experience. Micron is a company of engineers and accounting/finance feel looked down upon
-work/life balance of employees... come in early and leave later than needful

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    -Keep supporting the interns!

I worked at Micron Technology full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Good place to get a job right out of college. I was able to learn a lot about the real world work environment, and was able to apply some of what I learned in college.

    Cons

If you let them, they will work you to the bone. Once you are moved from hourly to salary, you will be expected to work 60+ hours per week. Managers and supervisors will take the quantity of hours you spend in the office, rather than quality of work, into consideration during reviews.

Generally speaking, it appeared as though people spent more time looking to place blame on others for things that went wrong, rather than fixing problems. If you take a position at Micron, expect to be "thrown under the bus" quite frequently.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

While employed at Micron, I felt that the executive management team did a great job of driving the company to be successful.

Director and management level professionals are worked so hard that, and spend so much time putting out fires, it seems that they have a difficult time doing the job they were hired to do, unless they work 60 - 80 hours per week.

Production supervisors, in my opinion were no more than babysitters. It appeared as though most were promoted because somebody liked them, not because of their capabilities. My experience was that the supervisors were unable (or unwilling) to help their employees

Former Employee - Technical Writer  in  Manassas, VA
Former Employee - Technical Writer in Manassas, VA

I worked at Micron Technology full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

In a state saturated with acronym soup (government contracting and software development), this manufacturing facility is a rare find. Technicians walk around in hard hats and clean room gowns; machine components sit half-constructed on desks; people actually build real technology - not all that bland, virtual crap that passes these days for engineering.

People there are enthusiastic about what they build, and it was a pleasure being a tech writer at such a company.

    Cons

Maybe this is part of working in manufacturing, but there's a definite resistance to doing anything differently. Tribal knowledge makes change frustrating. Also, the cyclical nature of the industry means occasional forced vacations or layoffs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

White collar workers don't and shouldn't subscribe to the same shift mindset as the clean room. Our work is qualitative and our productivity is rarely flat enough to measure in cycle time.

I have been working at Micron Technology full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

    Good pay for Boise
    Good benefits
A large company with decent opportunities

    Cons

    Some corporate bureaucracy
Movement upwards can be difficult since there are many people that won't leave the company (because they won't leave Boise)
Several executives are in their mid-50's and are part of a group that's been here for decades; this is starting to change a bit with recent new VP's
Depending on your group, hours can be rough
