    Mediocre

PP Intern (Former Employee) Beijing, Beijing (China)

ProsFree snacks and beverages. The working condition was nice.

ConsThe job was boring. As an intern I didn't learn much from my mentor.

    Fun experience

Explorer Intern (Former Employee) Redmond, WA

ProsMicrosoft - at least in the Office division - is pretty friendly. It's possible to work harder and get noticed. It's not very stressful.

As an intern, Microsoft throws a lot of money at you. Our Intern Signature Event was a trip to Boeing where they got us Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Deadmau5, and Surface Pro's. There were plenty of intern events, and with the intern mailing list, interns could arrange their own events based on specific interests (e.g. showing & discussion of UX lectures). And I got plenty of opportunities to talk to slightly higher-up FTEs.

Microsoft is full of very smart people. By talking to random people at events or on my team, I could have easily insightful discussions (on non-work-related topics).

ConsThe goals of Microsoft don't match the causes that I think are important. We support people volunteering ("day of caring"), but our products don't really aim to improve the world.

Excellent organization to pursue research career in Computer Science

Research Intern (Former Employee) Redmond, WA

    Pros- Nice benefits
    - Lots of smart people around to work with
    - Decent salary for an intern

Cons- Lack of flexibility in terms of engineering
    - Extremely rigid policies with respect to open source software, which is often an hindrance in research

    Developer Intern

    Intern (Current Employee) Redmond, WA

ProsInterns are very spoiled at Microsoft. We get lots of free stuff, and plenty of opportunities to have fun and enjoy Seattle.

ConsThe culture could be better in the office. The drink selection is much better at competing companies. A lot of legacy code.

    OK SDE internship at Microsoft

Software Development Engineer Intern (Former Employee) Redmond, WA

ProsCompetitive compensation; ease of movement among teams in the company; management is fairly transparent with regards to feedback; if you seek a structured environment, this is probably a very good place for you

ConsFull-time employees seem obsessed with performance reviews; as an intern, I found myself explaining the basics of my project to full-time employees far more than I really should have, perhaps indicating a lack of knowledge and focus on my team; being a Microsoft employee is all about "drinking the kool-aid", that is, seeming dissatisfied with the way a team is operating is almost always met with negativity rather than constructive responses

Good salary-One of the most competitive salaries among tech companies
    Good perks

    ConsToo bureaucratic
    Boring works
    Can't contribute too much

    Great 6-month Internship

Software Development Engineer Intern (Former Employee) Paris (France)

    ProsGreat atmosphere
    Great learning environment
Great flexibility in terms of working hours
    Great perks
Having Microsoft on his resume is truly a great advantage

ConsMicrosoft has tools and software to do pretty much everything. In the end, It can be annoying to use Microsoft products constantly (very little use of open source tools).

ProsI'm impressed by the working environment at Microsoft. Very great!

ConsSome projects are not well documented, or documented from a PM's perspective. Come on, I'm a developer!

Fantastic research-driven workplace where you will be surrounded by smart, friendly coworkers

    Doctoral Intern (Former Employee)

ProsResearchers here work much like they would in academia on self-directed projects.
Colleagues are smart and able to offer insightful feedback.
The facilities are lovely and well-appointed.
Pay is generous; vacation time and benefits are more than adequate.

ConsThere are very few cons to working at MSR.
I worked as a doctoral intern and I was disappointed that there were not more opportunities to be hired full-time upon finishing my degree.

    A good start from Microsoft

Intern (Current Employee) Beijing, Beijing (China)

ProsI don't know much about Microsoft, but know Microsoft Research Asia. As a industrial lab, we have freedom and support to do great research, both for improving products directly or long term purpose. The atmosphere is creative.

ConsAs a industrial lab, Microsoft Research Asia has high standard facility but less students compared to university. Researchers have to be accustomed to do experiments most of the time.

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company
