    Felt like just another number.

    PM Intern (Former Employee)
    Redmond, WA

    Pros-Great products
    -great opportunities
    -PM roll rocks

Cons-hit or miss with management. i had really bad luck with a manager that rejected her last 3 interns.
-no personalized attention really -- off on your own and expected to figure things out completely (my experience, my friend had different experiences)
-traffic if commuting from downtown Seattle

Advice to Senior Management-Invest more in your employees
-Try to keep groups seem smaller

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

One of the best intern program in the world

    Intern Researcher (Former Employee)
    Redmond, WA

ProsAmazing place, doing amazing project with amazing people. Very good benefit and decent pay. Seattle area is generally very beautiful in summers, and doing an intern at MSR is a great chance to visit. They even offer free xbox and kinect to every intern last year.

Cons1. No free food, 2. no health insurance, 3. only a few chance to get a full time offer (at MSR)
I can't imagine any other drawbacks other than these...

    Well-designed internship program

    Finance Manager Intern (Former Employee)
    Seattle, WA

ProsThey encourage people to move around the different parts of the company every 18-24 months. So one need not feel stuck no matter how un-motivating the current group or work is.

Efforts to promote meritocracy (but not always successful, as some politics naturally creeps in, in such a large company)

    Great work/life balance.

Various events to keep employees up-to-date of the new technologies.

Great food of every kind in the canteens.

    Parking never an issue.

ConsI was a finance manager intern, and before joining I did not realize that finance is implicitly viewed a support function. The influence of finance partners is not significant in the major decisions.

Groups work in their own silos, with little transfer of best practices among them.

Advice to Senior ManagementBreak down the silos.

    It was fantastic

    Program Manager Intern (Current Employee)
    Bellevue, WA

ProsThe internship program is obviously designed to fix any problems before they occur. I had very clear project expectations, lots of positive feedback, great working conditions, and excellent compensation.

ConsThe only major downside was the fact my project had trouble finding programmers to actually implement the planned feature, but my manager compensated very well.

Advice to Senior ManagementIt's hard to think of any way to improve - my overall experience was amazing. I guess the major problem is trying to coordinate so many projects in so many discrete departments.

Good if you are looking to settle down into a stable career for the rest of your life

    Intern (Former Employee)
    Redmond, WA

ProsEveryone I met over the age of 30 was happy to have an incredibly stable job at a company with excellent benefits and a lot of respect for their software engineers.

ConsEveryone I met under the age of 30 didn't have anything against Microsoft but was restless and wanted to go do something else with their lives.

Advice to Senior ManagementNothing in particular, I loved my time there and if you're looking for that sort of stability I can't imagine a better place to code.

A great place for a college internship.

    PM Intern (Former Employee)
    Redmond, WA

ProsVery friendly and talented folks; my manager was very resourceful and did not just give me a project that was swept under the rug.

ConsI feel like I could be making a larger contribution if I worked at a smaller company or SV area startup.

Advice to Senior ManagementWould be good to let incoming interns know ahead of time what they will be working on for the summer.

Great problems to work on. They have some of the best minds in the research community.

    Intern (Current Employee)
    Redmond, WA

ProsGreat breadth as well as depth of problems you can pursue. You can choose to work on something very fundamental in the area or on the other hand actually do something which can be tech-transferred to the product groups and would in fact impact future product releases. Great opportunities to make an impact.

ConsCan be more flexible in working with working on open source projects. Need to be careful in terms of publishing results since it might not be approved by the associated product groups etc.

Advice to Senior ManagementMicrosoft Research should have a full time option (associate position etc.) in Microsoft. Generally they take MS students as research assistants on a contract basis and might loose some great people to other labs due to this.

    Summer internship

    Software Engineering Intern (Current Employee)
    Redmond, WA

ProsPossibly the most structured internship on the planet. Summer camp for college students

Consummmm.. It really depends on who you are - I just felt kind of lost in the company. However, it really is a great company - they treat their employees really well

Advice to Senior Managementtry and relate more to the new hires
