MSR Silicon Valley is an amazing opportunity for Ph.D students

Former Employee - Research Intern  in  Mountain View, CA

I worked at Microsoft as an intern for less than a year

    Pros

World-best researchers in an academic-like setting, minus teaching / administrative duties. Think of professors at a top-5 school, but instead of grad students the researchers collaborate with each other. During summer, there is higher than a 1:1 intern to researcher ratio. The researchers have research they were wanting to do, but didn't have the manpower to. This is your opportunity. After the internship, there is good follow-up, and for me this led to a published paper that became a part of my thesis.

    Cons

An internship does not provide any extra advantage for future employment at MSR. The place is just too competitive. .NET is highly encouraged (if you like to choose your own languages).

I worked at Microsoft as an intern for less than a year

    Pros

Microsoft does great work not only in industry but also in academia. I'll only talk about Research part here. To do research, the first reason to be here is to work with the people. Microsoft has lots of top-notch computer scientists, and their work plays a very important role in the whole academia realm. Moreover, their researchers work seamlessly with industry as well, which makes their work benefit mankind at a much faster speed than any other institute ever.

    Cons

Lots of information to catch up in short period for summer interns, especially in the research team. Sometimes goal is not clear.

I have been working at Microsoft as an intern for less than a year

    Pros

The people are very friendly. Good work-life balance. Manager is transparent in what she is thinking. Microsoft is moving towards better business model.

    Cons

Big company problems; bureaucracy, slow, inefficient, lack of clear communication between groups. Too many layers between development and release (dev, QA, business, etc).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Remove barriers. Move faster. Break things. Fix Things.

I worked at Microsoft as an intern for less than a year

    Pros

    -learned quickly
-experienced all 3 disciplines--PM, SDE, SDET
-Microsoft pampers interns well--especially explore interns
-exposed to company, so no need to ramp up if/when you return next summer

    Cons

Microsoft is undergoing a lot of reorganization internally. SDET is not a very stable role in some teams, and they are moving towards combined engineering, so things can be a bit weird in the company during this transition period.

I have been working at Microsoft as an intern for less than a year

    Pros

    - While many people thought Microsoft environment is not very friendly for new employee, I found it very friendly and full of new opportunities to explore.
    - They took very good care of Interns by providing subsidizing housing and car rental, plus many exciting events.
    - I was working with the Bing section, and there are many unexplored areas in Bing which can be a great opportunity to make significant contributions.

    Cons

    - In comparison with companies such as Google, there are way less PhDs in the staff which sometimes make it harder to introduce radical research ideas.
    - The company went to a massive lay-off when I was there. Although that obviously don't affect interns, if you are considering Microsoft for a full-time position, there are risks that one of these lay-off waves hit you.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - Have better collaboration with researchers in MSR. Microsoft is lucky to have such brilliant scholars as part of MSR and if their creativity can be managed well, they can make huge contributions to the company.
    - Start more active programs of Fellowships for grad students, same as Google and Facebook, to enhance the picture of company and attract better talents.
