    Excellent Company to work for

Software Development Engineer Intern (Current Employee) Mountain View, CA

ProsThe company took good care of the interns, even the ones not in the Redmond location. Microsoft had a fun culture, interesting events, and an overall well organized intern program.

ConsMicrosoft is a large company that can be stuck in process and organization, that might slow down work progress and stifle creativity in favor of organized productivity.

Best place to do a research internship

Research Intern (Former Employee) Redmond, WA

    Pros+ World class researchers
    + Friendly environment
    + Great projects
+ Lots of perks for the interns
+ Weather is great during the summer
    Great experience overall

ConsNothing in particular. 3 months may not be enough for a full fledged project, so it takes a lot of effort, but it is worth it

    Best place to work for

Research Intern (Former Employee) Redmond, WA

Pros- A lot of smart people around
    - All cutting edge technologies
    - High speed hardware availability
    - Free coffee and drinks
    - There are always people who are experts in your area of need
    - Nice playground, and on-campus cafeteria

    Cons- No free lunch/ dinner.
    - Very big company; so dependencies are large. Each department has their own priority. So, you have to stall your research until you hear back from the product team, which takes over a week sometimes.

    Nice place to work at

Research Intern (Former Employee) Redmond, WA

ProsFlexible working hour, free sodas, nice gym membership, parking well available, once a month a party with wine. For interns there was also a subsidized car rental -- a good thing to take to see around, even though not a necessity for commuting as the company accommodation is just across the road.

Consworking in offices with very thin walls, if someone on the other side is having a lot of phone calls, it may get a bit disturbing. No free food as google has, having at least some fruit available through day would be nice...

    Awesome Internship Experience

Program Manager Intern (Former Employee) Redmond, WA

ProsPay, great gifts (Samsung series 9 ultra book), exciting and real work, individual office!, intern speaker series with Steve Ballmer and VPs, amazing events with private concerts (Young the Giant, Alabama Shakes), the list goes on.
This was by far the best internship experience I've had. I felt that I made a difference and learned plenty along the way. Even if you don't see yourself going to Microsoft full time, this is still an amazing internship opportunity!

ConsAbout 1500 interns so you can't meet everyone.
Redmond is boring, but it's only a 25 minute drive to Seattle in no traffic.

Advice to Senior ManagementGreat job with the intern program.

    Amazing learning experience

Research Intern (Former Employee) Redmond, WA

ProsFirst, the work atmosphere is motivating, providing a lot of opportunities to learn both the technical knowledge and how the industrial research works. Second, my boss was very helpful, providing a precise advice and guidance for the project I was working on. Finally, the most rewarding part was an opportunity to make a lasting influence, by working on a project that got shipped with the next version of Windows operating system.

ConsThe only downside I can think of is the nature of research that requires short term to mid-term benefits. For people who would prefer more fundamental, but riskier research plans Microsoft research might not be the best place to be. Although, that might not apply in general, but only for the unit I was involved in.

One of the best intern program in the world

Intern Researcher (Former Employee) Redmond, WA

ProsAmazing place, doing amazing project with amazing people. Very good benefit and decent pay. Seattle area is generally very beautiful in summers, and doing an intern at MSR is a great chance to visit. They even offer free xbox and kinect to every intern last year.

Cons1. No free food, 2. no health insurance, 3. only a few chance to get a full time offer (at MSR)
I can't imagine any other drawbacks other than these...

    It was fantastic

Program Manager Intern (Current Employee) Bellevue, WA

ProsThe internship program is obviously designed to fix any problems before they occur. I had very clear project expectations, lots of positive feedback, great working conditions, and excellent compensation.

ConsThe only major downside was the fact my project had trouble finding programmers to actually implement the planned feature, but my manager compensated very well.

Advice to Senior ManagementIt's hard to think of any way to improve - my overall experience was amazing. I guess the major problem is trying to coordinate so many projects in so many discrete departments.

Good if you are looking to settle down into a stable career for the rest of your life

    Intern (Former Employee) Redmond, WA

ProsEveryone I met over the age of 30 was happy to have an incredibly stable job at a company with excellent benefits and a lot of respect for their software engineers.

ConsEveryone I met under the age of 30 didn't have anything against Microsoft but was restless and wanted to go do something else with their lives.

Advice to Senior ManagementNothing in particular, I loved my time there and if you're looking for that sort of stability I can't imagine a better place to code.
