    I worked at Microsoft

    Pros

    Good products. High ethical standards.

    Cons

Mgmt is ill trained and rarely puts their staff members in positions to succeed. Most of the time they are looking out for themselves.

I worked at Microsoft full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Best-in-class people. Really, these are some of the smartest, most committed folks you will find.
Huge impact on billions of people across the planet.

    Cons

Large company culture is too ingrained into most of the workforce. This comes in the way of nimbleness, leading to lower productivity when compared to other companies in the same space. Wish the changes that are being pushed now, were undertaken 10 years ago. I fear its too late to recover now.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Cut the "process" red-tape. Far too many managers have made their careers building elaborate process, and this is now proving to be the downfall for the company!
Encourage a more collaborative environment, where individuals are measured based on how they impact the overall

I have been working at Microsoft full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Great experience gathering for working with Enterprise level accounts. Ability to "sell it all". Good compensation package.

    Cons

Many "old school" mentality for what is to be a Customer Focused environment. the House will always win. Quotas are consistently late for fiscal year setting.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Learn to make things happen quickly and allow AEs to be empowered to make deals happen. Remove the obstacles.

I have been working at Microsoft full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Smart people, employees are excited about what they are building, products provide great value for the price, the whole company gives back to the community both as individuals and as a corporate entity, have the best story for hybrid (on-prem + cloud) computing out of all vendors. Compensation and benefits are fair, a bit above average.

    Cons

If you are in the field and on the management track, upward mobility is limited even for top performers. Once you reach a certain grade level it is very difficult to advance any further without leaving the company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Reward your top performers to keep them engaged, even if they are managers. There has seemed to be a trend over the last few years of only rewarding individual contributors.

I have been working at Microsoft full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Microsoft is a good company to work for, with better than average stability and opportunities for career growth. The pay can range from average for most to exceptional for a few. Most people you will run across and work with are smart and passionate about something. (but not always technology - see cons) Generally there is a lot of opportunity for autonomy and making decisions which impact the areas you own at all levels. The culture is very diverse and diversity is valued, though that does not mean differences are respected by all.

    Cons

It's a BIG company bogged down by its organization size and engineering complexity. Teams mentality in generally towards other teams is negative and distrustful. Microsoft has evolved from from a scrappy start-up like mentality to operate more like IBM. The average employees technical IQ and passion for technology and customers has waned over the years. Teams often have a hard time working together to achieve common goals. Good people managers (leads) are not rewarded as such unless you are a middle level manager where work-group and people management is your primary responsibility.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

More accountability and emphasis on shared deliverable commitments rather than an individuals deliverable. Make the review commitments between all employees open and view-able. Place more emphasis on direct customer interactions for EVERYONE.

I have been working at Microsoft full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

    * you will be surrounded by brilliant people and cutting edge technology.
    * humane hours are possible, depending on the team. Some groups have great work/family balance. It just depends where you land.
    * decent perks for food, deals, etc but not like before and nothing like Bay area companies.
    * supportive of healthy lifestyles - the StayFit program, the bike commuter program... all good.
    * one of the most charitable organizations I have ever worked for...

    Cons

    * the medical benefits -- often touted as "amazing" in the past, have changed dramatically recently. Make sure you deep dive on this before you join and don't be swayed by some recruiter marketing. The main Medical plan available to most employees is a high deductible plan complete with amazing amount of paperwork that you have to manage. That said, I appreciate the opportunity to have the benefit, in the first place. Just make sure you understand what "top notch" medical benefits are vs. just above average.

    * prepare for the politics and the constant change - pretty standard for tech but I was surprised how fluid things are. This is good and bad. Choose your opportunities and alliances carefully.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Communicate the long-term plans... try to minimize the "musical chairs" so folks can focus on tasks...

I have been working at Microsoft

    Pros

Extremely smart people from top MBA programs. Good work and life balance. Decent benefits.

    Cons

It takes a long time to get one thing done as it is a very process driven company.
