I worked at Microsoft part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

The research internship program is really well-organized. There're housing, car rental and relocation subsidies, as well as internship only events.

    Cons

No option for a return offer.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider giving research interns options to work full-time after graduate.

I worked at Microsoft as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Great intern program, GREAT pay, supportive team structure, they spoil you like crazy, beautiful location (Seattle), LOTS of design flexibility with your project, you are treated like a real member of the team

    Cons

low key projects in big company - fell like I don't have enough contribution. Good for first internship if you are bound to make lots of mistakes, experience depends A LOT on the individual team and manager - so not guaranteed

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Let the interns have a little more of a say in which project they ca work on. If they are excited about it, you'll get better results

I have been working at Microsoft as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Great people to work with - really interested in helping you grow.
Fantastic perks, pretty good salary, and if you get lucky with corporate housing you can be really close.
    Intern events were really something.

    Cons

Experience depends heavily on your team - but most people I know had a great time.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Great ideas at the lower levels that don't always make their way up.

I worked at Microsoft as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Microsoft - at least in the Office division - is pretty friendly. It's possible to work harder and get noticed. It's not very stressful.

As an intern, Microsoft throws a lot of money at you. Our Intern Signature Event was a trip to Boeing where they got us Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Deadmau5, and Surface Pro's. There were plenty of intern events, and with the intern mailing list, interns could arrange their own events based on specific interests (e.g. showing & discussion of UX lectures). And I got plenty of opportunities to talk to slightly higher-up FTEs.

Microsoft is full of very smart people. By talking to random people at events or on my team, I could have easily insightful discussions (on non-work-related topics).

    Cons

The goals of Microsoft don't match the causes that I think are important. We support people volunteering ("day of caring"), but our products don't really aim to improve the world.

I have been working at Microsoft as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Interns are very spoiled at Microsoft. We get lots of free stuff, and plenty of opportunities to have fun and enjoy Seattle.

    Cons

The culture could be better in the office. The drink selection is much better at competing companies. A lot of legacy code.

I worked at Microsoft full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Researchers here work much like they would in academia on self-directed projects.
Colleagues are smart and able to offer insightful feedback.
The facilities are lovely and well-appointed.
Pay is generous; vacation time and benefits are more than adequate.

    Cons

There are very few cons to working at MSR.
I worked as a doctoral intern and I was disappointed that there were not more opportunities to be hired full-time upon finishing my degree.
