I worked at Microsoft as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Competitive compensation; ease of movement among teams in the company; management is fairly transparent with regards to feedback; if you seek a structured environment, this is probably a very good place for you

    Cons

Full-time employees seem obsessed with performance reviews; as an intern, I found myself explaining the basics of my project to full-time employees far more than I really should have, perhaps indicating a lack of knowledge and focus on my team; being a Microsoft employee is all about "drinking the kool-aid", that is, seeming dissatisfied with the way a team is operating is almost always met with negativity rather than constructive responses

I worked at Microsoft as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

As an explorer intern I got to experience the three disciplines: dev, test, and pm. I got to interview at the end of my internship for an internship next summer. If you stay on the same team, it is very easy to get offered back a full time offer. There are tons of intern events within the department that I worked and with the interns as a whole. The work environment was great and everyone was very eager to help me. I loved the project that I worked on during the summer.

    Cons

I am not a hug fan of the Seattle area. Redmond was very boring to me. I also did not have a car so I really couldn't get around much.

    Pros

Great work-life balance, they care about growing you and helping to further your career. The benefits are amazing, there's great mobility within the company as a whole, and the work is interesting and engaging.

    Cons

It's easy to overwork yourself. The "calibration" system is terrible.

I have been working at Microsoft as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

They treat interns very well; it's what you make of the internship and managers are very helpful and willing to share.

    Cons

You have to fix your eyes on inspiring people because there are some interns who will pull you to slack off.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Perhaps treat interns more similarly to the full time employees so that we get a feel for what full time would be like

I worked at Microsoft as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Lots of intern activities. Great work environments. Free sodas and Starbucks coffee machine. Great cafeteria. Nice place to do research.

    Cons

Weather is nice during Summer but not so good the rest of the year. Have to work long hours but pay is not hourly so no overtime bonus pay.

    Pros

    - Great researchers contribute to making microsoft research an intellectually stimulating environment to work in.
    - Interesting and challenging projects to work on over the summer.
    - Microsoft research organizes a ton of free events for interns that are a lot of fun.

    Cons

    - High expectations from researchers in terms of getting results can be somewhat stressful at times.
    - Commute to work can be somewhat long depending one where you stay.

I have been working at Microsoft as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Very flexible hours as long as your work gets done. Many people here work 40-50 hours per week and you're not looked down upon for doing so. Overall nice work environment. Work with very skilled and experienced people. Interesting work.

For interns, pay is among the best for tech companies and the subsidized housing and rental car make it even better. Intern events are also awesome.

    Cons

Sometimes have to deal with legacy systems. As with any huge company, there's some annoying bureaucracy to deal with. In many groups, there are no coding standards, insufficient code reviews, and extremely poor documentation. Work with lots of custom internal tools which means that experience here is not very transferable to other companies in some cases.

Biggest con though is there doesn't seem to be much enthusiasm from people in their day-to-day work; many people seem to be here to just do a decent job and get paid but don't care deeply about actually improving the customer experience or making their projects succeed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get mid and lower managers to make coding standards, code reviews, and documentation more of a priority. Yes, it's boring stuff but it would really save time and money in the long-run by reducing the number of bugs and duplicated effort. Make company-wide or division-wide standards (like Google's style guidelines) for the commonly-used programming languages.

I have been working at Microsoft as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

They give you tons of equipment that you'll ever want or need.
Lots of smart people to be around all the time.
    You're own office.
Free drinks whenever I want them.
Great cafeteria food and they even tell you what's healthy and not.
    VERY VERY eco friendly environment.
Encourage you to go out and meet other people on campus so they have happy hours where they serve free beer and food. They also encourage you to join sports on campus and you can go at any time during work hours to do whatever you want, may it be working out, volleyball, on a run, chat with people, get food, they don't care just have fun.
The general thought is you can do whatever you want as long as your happy and you're getting your work done. You pretty much only HAVE to be in the office when you have meetings.
Great benefits in and outside of the work place.

    Cons

Since people are so free to do what they want its hard to deal with everyone schedules.
There's a lot of smart but very arrogant and hard headed people - dealing with them can be very difficult and sometimes its hard to get what you want done.
Lots of politics in the management.

I have been working at Microsoft as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

You get to do interesting and important work, even as an intern. The people are nice, helpful, and personable. There are free drinks (Coke products, Pepsi products, fruit juice, milk, and Starbucks coffee). They have an internal shuttle service that takes you anywhere you need to go and commuter buses with wifi.

    Cons

For me, the only real downside has been how far it is from my home, girlfriend, and family. It'll be better when I come back full time though because they're paying relocation for my girlfriend and putting her on my health insurance even though we aren't married.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Most of the PMs aren't actually useful. You could easily do with fewer of them.
