I worked at Mine Safety Appliances full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Mine Safety has 2000 great people who really do work well with others.

    Cons

It's quite a distance from Pittsburgh and variations in economic conditions dictate sales and thus how much work is available.

I have been working at Mine Safety Appliances full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The remote agent program allows you to work from home 1-2 days per week. There are always food days to celebrate something or simply just because. There are different ways that coworkers can recognize your efforts that result in gift cards.

    Cons

Some days can be very busy especially when people are in training or on vacation. The department needs at least 2 more people to be staffed to the point that people do not get overwhelmed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

An investment in additional resources can help to improve the quality of work and reduce turn over in the department. The doesn't appear to be a contingency plan for when you lose employees. It is all reactive and very slow to react.

I have been working at Mine Safety Appliances full-time

    Pros

Work-life balance is excellent. Atmosphere is laid back and there is little pressure to overwork. Benefits are good and employees are treated with respect by management.

    Cons

Very little turnover means very little opportunity for advancement. Nobody gets fired so there are some really poor performers in the company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Pros

*Profit sharing when the company is doing well.
*Nice coworkers, many have worked there for a long time
*Management seems to listen well to their employees

    Cons

*They are publicly traded - When the stock market gets bad, so does your pay/bonus. In 2008, when the market turned sour, they instituted pay freezes, voluntary retirement programs, and eventually layoffs. I got scared and found another job before they started laying people off.

*No team-building activities, no annual company holiday party - nothing. You show up, work, and go home.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

None - my experience with management was good.

I worked at Mine Safety Appliances as an intern (more than a year)

    Pros

I thought that MSA was a great environment as a co-op. In general, there were nice people and a major plus was flex hours (i.e., get in your 40 hours on your own schedule, within reason)

    Cons

Did not receive huge responsibilities and felt I could have done more than granted.
