Great place to work if you like learning

Prefer Not to Say (Current Employee) Melbourne (Australia)

ProsThe University is in the forefront of research in many fields, eg medicine, engineering. Plenty of opportunities to contribute to knowledge that can potentially make a difference in the world, while at the same time furthering your career and reputation.
Many opportunities in support positions eg, laboratory, IT, admin. There's always something new to get to grips with. Lots of free lunchtime seminars by research students and academics will keep you constantly learning new things.
Employees are offered time off for fully paid training courses to further their job skills.

ConsThe pressure to publish. Pressure to gain research grants. There is huge competition to gain a share of the limited government research budgets. Putting together a winning application will take weeks of work.
For support staff there's the pressure to do everything but never enough staff to do it.
At the "bottom of the ladder" there are the cleaning and maintenance staff. Most are part-time, under-paid out-sourced or invisible.

Advice to Senior ManagementWe are giving serious consideration to the idea of adding hidden transducers to make "ping" sounds along with coloured lights and perhaps flasks of coloured liquid. Maybe this will convince you lot that there is "real" research going on here and that some more staff would be helpful.

Great place to work, but not alot of stability

Executive Officer (Former Employee) Melbourne (Australia)

ProsGreat culture, Great people, fantastic facilities, state of the art work place

ConsNo stability, unless you're lucky to secure a permanent position, Mobility at Monash don't look at your skills, just your pay levels

Advice to Senior ManagementLet the staff employing for a position look at the "talent pool" not leave it to HR to decide for them

    Typical university-based research position

Research Assistant (Former Employee) Melbourne (Australia)

ProsExcellent opportunities to take on additional responsibilities within the department, such as assessing undergraduate student coursework, running departmental meetings, maintaining shared equipment and so on.

ConsUndergraduate students are very demanding, and like to turn up to the office asking for supervisors or help with assignments outside of set hours, or with little warning.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe process between hiring and getting pay, IT facilities and staff card etc needs to be smoothed out - I only found out my email account was ready to use by ringing up the IT department myself.

    Recommended place to work

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Clayton (Australia)

ProsClayton campus is convenient. Lots of choices to go for lunch, can do your daily errands very easily.

Have a good study leave policy, and can be extremely flexible if you need to be absent for study reasons.

Lots of secondment opportunities, just be patient and wait for the right one.

ConsWomen are outnumbered here 3 to 1. (This is in IT @ monash, not monash generally).

Massive workload leading up to semester, but can be enjoyable if you like the intensity of that sort of thing. :-)

Advice to Senior ManagementAn local mentoring scheme for younger/newer employees would be a help.

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend
