Great company to work for... if you're a full-time employee!

    Seasonal Laborer (Current Employee)

ProsThey offer competitive pay and paid holidays off to their seasonal employees.

ConsThey are able to work you 40 hours a week for years on end but consider you a "seasonal employee" so they don't have to offer you the same benefits a full-time employee receives. There is no true management; most upper level managers aren't even in the same state as their employees which doesn't provide the correct structure that is needed for employees.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

Awesome opportunity to understand the plant electrical engineering

    Electrical Engineer (Current Employee)
    Luling, LA

ProsGreat/Fun people to work with- You can't find a better team to work with.
Great place to learn plant engineering. Senior engineers are easy to work with. Family like atmosphere.

ConsStagnant career. Advancement require a lot of patience and perception rules!! Also, Management wants to do things that will make a better power point presentation, while everyone knows reality out in the field is completely different! No one listens to quarterly reviews, but plant manager likes them- so he can put a bullet point on his resume.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop trying to look good with temporary cost savings and do what will benefit the company in the long run. Stop "organisational changes". It doesn't matter how you cut it, work is work and the only way to do it is to get up and get at it!

Great place to start your career

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    Saint Louis, MO

ProsNice people to work with. Excellent place to start your career, get to learn a lot.
Great Work life balance and benefits.

ConsNot for the ambitious and career oriented professionals. Will have to be a part of the office politics to move up the ladder. Undeserving candidates get promoted.

Advice to Senior ManagementProvide more able leadership. Weed out the non-performing folks and promote the deserving one's.

Strong Company, but work life balance is failing.

    Process Engineer (Current Employee)
    Muscatine, IA

ProsCompensation is good. The company is very innovative and generally stays ahead of the curve.

ConsMany initiatives (leaders trying to leave their "mark") have added non-value added work and the work life balance is suffering as a result...50-60 hr weeks are becoming the expectation. You need to be willing to relocate to in order to move up.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe willing to reduce non-value added work even if it means potentially admitting that a past idea was a poor one.

Does not follow own leadership training guidelines.

    Analyst (Former Employee)
    Saint Louis, MO

ProsMonsanto takes care of their employees from the standpoint of excellent pay and benefits. The "worker bees" are great, and still have many friends still working there.

ConsA very "silo'd" atmosphere which tends to stifle your creativity and definitely can frustrate you as you try to work on projects while not knowing what the other guy is doing. The cubicle atmosphere lends itself to no personal privacy. Company politics is terrible. Some of the worse that I have seen. If you don't play the game, you get labeled as a non-team player. Meetings galore. It's hard to make deadlines at times since you are in so many meetings. The joke was that you had to have a meeting to decide if you needed to have a meeting.

Advice to Senior ManagementFollow your own guidelines. You spend a lot of money on training managers on how to treat their people, and then they don't follow what they have been trained to do, and HR allows it to happen. Be fair to everyone, and get rid of the politics. Vegetables was the "new kid on the block" in the Monsanto family, but had the worse reputation for the back biting politics that is was played.

    Good People. Uncaring Leadership.

    Research Scientist (Former Employee)
    Saint Louis, MO

ProsGood salary, benefits. Stable environment. Safety conscious. Great people to work with at the base level for the most part. Good work/life balance. Overall, it's a good place to work if you have a good manager.

ConsScience is all high throughput, not alot of thought. Leadership is EXTREMELY political. If you are not inside the leadership clique, you will never grow in your career. Leaders also look down on their employees as justification for their career success.

Advice to Senior ManagementReward your scientists for doing good science. Make the fellows program something real.

Nice people to work but management needs help.

    Project Manager (Former Employee)
    Saint Louis, MO

ProsSome of the best people I hzve ever worked with. Made coming to work fun and enjoyable.

ConsManagement is TOO polictical and spend too much time feathering their nests at the expense of the employees.

Advice to Senior ManagementPractice what you preach and teach in your management classes. It's difficult to work in a culture where management can't live up to the same level the expect of their emplyees.

Good company to work for, but not if you want to stay in a position

    Marketing (Current Employee)
    Saint Louis, MO

    ProsGood salary, bonus, and vacation

ConsWont get a raise unless you change jobs......not valued as a pro in your position.

Advice to Senior Managementyou need to recognize that not everyone wants to change careers and there is a lot of value to people staying in their positions

I was not prepared to work at Monsanto

    Business Analyst (Former Employee)
    Saint Louis, MO

Prosthe campus is very pretty, the value safety

Conspace is slow to start and I supported a system very scientific which was hard for me to pick up.

Advice to Senior Managementbe careful when interviewing. I was not a good choice for the role. I did not have enough science background for this role
