I worked at Monster Worldwide full-time for more than a year

    Pros

As with most tech companies, the people you work directly with (your peers) are great. Don't worry though, you'll probably get to work with them again at another company.

    Cons

The Senior management has no moral compass.
They kowtow to the board members and routinely lay off employees because their margins on their "$1.5 billion" revenue are off by a fraction of a percentage.
The health insurance benefits are really poor.

This company is run by accountants and they have no interest in innovating. Creativity is a disease that they try to wipe out by continuously "reorganizing".

    Pros

Benefits are good, people that you work with make the job worth while.

    Cons

No guidance or direction, Lack of communication from upper management. Too many times people are selected for advancement because they are a favorite of management even if someone else is more qualified for the job.

    Pros

The employees at Monster are wonderfully collaborative. They go above and beyond to accomplish the goals of the organization.

    Cons

Senior management is so focused on their "fiduciary responsibilities" that everything else suffers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You have an obligation to employees as well, not just to stockholders!

Former Employee - National Account Manager in New York, NY

    I worked at Monster Worldwide

    Pros

If you can hit outlandish quotas, the pay is stellar
If you were/are field-based, great flexibility
Great opportunities to learn, grow & hone skills

    Cons

Honestly the worst, most-incompetent sr. sales managers I've ever worked for
True big brother, rule by fear mentality
Sal Iannuzzi has run this ship into the ground
Sales Managers should remove the word "sales" from their title, because they can't
In the past 24 mos. this company has hemorrhaged some of the best sales talent around, and it shows
Completely irrelevant today, and it's not going to get better

    Pros

Great work/life balance if you are good at drawing a line in the sand
    Decent benefits and time off
Super friendly people - great co-workers
    Autonomy

    Cons

No strategy or direction coming from upper management - strategy seems to be try everything and see if it sticks. Unfortunately, most things do not.
No focus on clear goals for projects
Little to no iterating on projects - oftentimes leaving projects half finished and available to the public
Antiquated business model - competitors are beating them badly with no strategy as to how it could be addressed
Lots of politics and favorites - very much a "boys club"

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get involved! Talk to your people - they are really smart and have great ideas. Hands-off laissez-faire management is not a way to run a business or promote career development for your employees.

    I worked at Monster Worldwide

    Pros

    * You can work on some interesting projects.
    * You can work with some intelligent and competent people.
    * You are working for a "known" company. Name recognition is high.

    Cons

    * Non-stop upper management turnover and issues.
    * Nepotism has always been a problem.
    * Its best days are behind it. Does anyone think Monster has a vision anymore?

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    * I would offer them some, but they wouldn't listen.
    * Ranting at company meetings is not great for morale.

    I worked at Monster Worldwide

    Pros

name recognition, smart people, great building, daycare onsite, learned a lot, pay and benefits were decent, flexibility and family friendliness

    Cons

Ruthless company that will throw you out like yesterday's trash, lots of office politics, too many meetings, too much bureacracy, too much turnover, too many layoffs

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Guys -- you let some great people go. I think you were throwing the baby out with the bathwater to save costs. If you really want to make cuts, streamline the bureacracy and find ways people can work together.
