MSSB has young and vibrant work culture. people embrace new thoughts and are open minded. Great place to join no matter if you are intern or MD.

    Cons

Not a product company hence projects move with their own pace!

    Pros

This is a meritocracy where talent and harwork are rewarded. There are scores of mobility opportiunities and career development offerings. Diversity is sinceerely embraced here. Nothing feels forced. I especially appreciate their commitment to women and the developement of their careers.

    Cons

Compensation is fair, but certainly not on a par with Goldman Sachs. But on the plus side, you may actually have a life while working here.

    Keep up the good work.

    Pros

Those that work hard and are willing to learn about their business will find enough projects to prove their worth

    Cons

Things are still in flux and will take years to settle in to a rhythm.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on the tech - don't stop improving and look to advice from the people that do the day to day work - their insight is invaluable...and generally more accurate.

I worked at Morgan Stanley Smith Barney as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

I was a part of the MS team for the 2012 summer as a global wealth management summer analyst. I had the opportunity to challenge myself daily and work with a diverse group of people. I was in a market facing role, so my days were always different with new tasks. The directors were all stand-up guys, always offering to lend a helping hand to the rookie and offering advice when needed. The hours were a little long, but the days flew by being around a great group of people.

    Cons

As an intern, you always get the short end of the stick. Meaning you get the work load, the phone calls no analysts want to handle, and maybe even the longer day. But, thats part of being the intern.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I'm a big guy, I need a longer lunch break.

    Pros

They sponsor you to get licensed immediately, there are locations nationwide and internationally so it's good for someone like me who may not plan on living in NYC forever.

    Cons

In branches, job opportunities are limited. Your only options are Financial Advisor, Client Service Associate, and Operations. There are several opportunities in Morgan Stanley itself though, so this isn't much of a con.

I have been working at Morgan Stanley Smith Barney

    Pros

I love the work environment at the branch. Everyone gets along, there's always work to do so the day goes by quickly. Also, I like the fact that I can go to the nearby headquarters building and use the company gym for a great price.

    Cons

No downside where I work, but I've been to some of the more corporate offices and the environment seems VERY different than the branch environment. It seemed pretty quiet (not that it's loud at the branch, but it's lively and welcoming).

I was an intern at MSSB for almost 3 years so I know this company pretty well.

Former Employee - Mssb Intern in New York, NY
Former Employee - Mssb Intern in New York, NY

I worked at Morgan Stanley Smith Barney

    Pros

    - good work life balance. if you are a financial advisor, you can use your time as you see fit, including not coming in the office on Fridays or whatnot, which is total flexibility. if you are a CSA, you can leave on the dot everyday as long as you have your work done/managed.
    - although people are generally very uptight/impatient during the hours when the market is opened, they are generally very nice and friendly people when the market closes or on Fridays, where everybody is more relaxed. people are mostly open to conversations and laughs.
    - very stable job because MSSB generates steady revenue unlike other parts of the bank. yes there were headcounts but it's pretty stable compare to other divisions/banks.

    Cons

    - MSSB doesn't pay me; the advisor who I worked with pays me, so I don't get the "ibank internship" rate. I get whatever the advisor chooses to pay me (which is very low)
    - bureaucracy, bureaucracy, bureaucracy! i don't blame them because it's a huge company, but literally everything is about bureaucracy and doing things by the rule = huge amount of paperwork and phone calls to solve 1 problem
    - most people are complaining about the new system that they just implemented, which is obviously created by somebody who doesn't work in MSSB because of various non-user-friendly programs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

really good job on expanding MSSB, but maybe do some MORE FA questionnaire about the systems? i know there was a pilot program but not enough?
