Good training ground. Lots of opportunities to grow

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at Morningstar full-time

ProsGood environment to work . People are approachable and make you comfortable. Plenty of room to grow and loads of opportunities. Loved to work here!

ConsSalary is not too good. Could do better on that front. Competitive salary with industry peers could stem good talent from leaving.

Great Work Environment

Operations Analyst (Current Employee)
Chicago, IL

I have been working at Morningstar full-time for more than a year

ProsFull of friendly co-workers, allows great work-life balance. Promotes from within and gives preference to internal over external candidates. Good benefits.

ConsCompensation below industry average, lack of aggressive stance for future growth. Personally I feel people are only in the office to get the job done and nothing more.

A great company with great people

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Chicago, IL

I have been working at Morningstar full-time for more than 5 years

ProsMorningstar provides flexibility, independent minded culture, with bright and eager professionals. Morningstar makes way for many different styles of work with a supportive atmosphere. Benefits of a large company include educational stipends.

ConsCareer monitoring and development is tasked to the individual and their manager, and as a young company, non-upper managers tend toward very green. Formerly diversified and now reshuffled business units along with recent acquisitions create some organizational friction.

Advice to Senior ManagementSeek out new ways to motivate talent and investment in bigger opportunities

Overall a pretty great place to work

Financial Analyst (Current Employee)
Chicago, IL

I have been working at Morningstar full-time for more than 3 years

ProsLaid back culture (casual dress code), smart & fun people (lots of different backgrounds), great benefits (401k match, educational stipend) & work/life balance (no vacation policy)

Morningstar values its employees and definitely takes great care in hiring awesome people. There are several initiatives that allow employees to further their education or learn from others in the company. There is a lot of collaboration and everyone works really hard to ensure that the products and services are perfect and that the client experience is top notch.

ConsCompensation, duplicative efforts across multiple teams, currently many changes that seem to blindside employees

Good place to start

Analyst (Former Employee)
Chicago, IL

I worked at Morningstar full-time for more than a year

ProsA number of smart people, nice environment, stability. Very laid-back hours

ConsToo much bureaucracy -- lots of busy work as an analyst. Not too much room for creativity. Low pay -- ideal for a younger analyst.

Advice to Senior ManagementPay top performers more in equity and fixed analyst pool or risk losing them. Don't pull back on bonuses when revenue comes in a bit -- your margins are huge and that tells people you don't want to invest in them
